GAHS wins first game, 45-34 over SGHS

Gallipolis hands South Gallia first loss, 45-34
Before a capacity crowd, host Gallipolis handed South Gallia its first loss of the 2014-15 hardwood campaign by a 45-34 count in a defensive struggle at Centenary Saturday evening.
Big gun for Gallia Academy was Wes Jarrell who scored 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Mike Putney added 10 points for GAHS while Alex White chipped in with eight markers.
South Gallia was led by Brayden Greer with 16 points and Kane Hutchinson with seven points and six rebounds. Landon Hutchinson chipped in with seven points.
The first half was a nip and tuck affair. The Rebels scored first on a driving layup by Kane Hutchinson, followed by a charity toss to make it 3-0 at the 7:28 mark.
Jarrell ‘s layup put GAHS on the board at 6:49. SGHS was up 6-2 with 6:27 left in the period 8-7 at the 4:39 mark before Alan White’s layup gave GAHS its first lead of the night, 9-8 at the 3:04 mark.
White’s layup at 2:59 gave GAHS a 11-8 lead but Greer’s two-pointer cut Gallipolis’ lead to 11-10 after one quarter.
The second period saw four lead exchanges and two ties before Kane Hutchinson’s free throw left Gallipolis on top with a 21-20 halftime edge.
GAHS outscored South Gallia 13-7 in the third quarter to take a 34-27 lead into the final quarter.
The Blue Devils outscored the Rebels 11-7 in the fourth quarter to post their first victory in four games. South Gallia dropped to 3-1 after the non-conference contest.
Unofficial stats show GAHS canned 19 of 39 field goal attempts for 48.7 percent. At the line, GAHS sank seven of 17 for 45.2 percent. GAHS picked off 28 rebounds, had 12 turnovers and 17 personal fouls.
South Gallia made 13 of 47 field goal attempts for 27.6 percent. At the line, the Rebels were six of 13 for 46.1 percent. The Rebels picked off 18 rebounds, had 13 turnovers and committed 16 personal fouls.
Gallipolis made it a clean sweep Saturday by winning the freshman game 40-17 and the JV game, 51-22.
In the freshman game, GAHS led 15-3, 25-10 and 38-17 at the quarter marks.
Kaden Thomas led GAHS with 11 points. Evan Wiseman and Brandon Simms had eight points each and Justin Sellers added seven points.
Gallipolis improved to 1-2 on the year and SGHS dropped to 1-1.
In the JV game, Gallipolis led 11-8, 30-15 and 45-21 at the quarter marks.
Russ Matthews led GAHS with 14 points. Jeremy Johnson led South Gallia with aafive points. Curtis Haner added four.
Gallipolis improved to 1-3 overall. South Gallia dropped to 2-2 on the year.
Gallipolis will travel to Ironton for a triple header Tuesday in a non-league game. GAHS will host Logan in an SEOAL game Friday, and Marietta Saturday in a non-league outing.
South Gallia will host Southern Tuesday in a TVC battle.
