Gallipolis turns back Wellston, 60-48
Gallipolis Gallia Academy rallied from a 30-25 halftime deficit to defeat visiting Wellston 60-48 in a non-league makeup basketball game in the Centenary gym Wednesday evening.
Played before one of the smallest home crowds of the season, GAHS led 14-8 after one period. Kole Carter hit a short jumper as the initial period ended.
However, in the second stanza, the Golden Rockets, with a splurge of three-pointers, outscored GAHS 22-11 to grab a 30-25 halftime advantage.
Main culprit in the period was Wellston’s sophomore Chazz Davis who scored 10 of his 15 points against GAHS.
Wade Jarrell’s trey started Gallipolis’ second half rally at the 6:50 mark on the third period. .Davis hit another trey (6:36) to put WHS up 33-28. Gallipolis then outscored the Rockets 15-0 over the next four minutes to take a 43-33 lead with 2:30 left in the period. GAHS led 47-39 after three periods.
GAHS outscored the young Rockets 17-11 in the final eight minutes to secure its ninth win of the year against eight losses. Wellston dropped to 4-11 on the year.
Gallipolis returns home Saturday, Feb. 1 for a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League contest against Jackson. It will be a tripleheader with the freshman game starting at 5 p.m. Meigs will host Wellston in a TVC game on Jan. 31.
Wellston placed two players in double figure scoring, led by Colton Ervin’s 16 points. Chazz Davis added 15 and Caleb Stanley had five.
Wellston connected on 16 of 48 field goal attempts (including 7 three-pointers) for 33.3 percent. At the line, WHS was nine of 12 at the line for 75 percent. The Golden Rockets picked off 24 rebounds, eight by Chazz Davis and seven by Colton Ervin. WHS had 14 turnovers and 10 personal fouls.
Gallipolis placed three players in double figures in scoring, led by Reid Eastman’s 14 points. Wade Jarrell added 13 and Wes Jarrell 10. Alex White scored eight markers in the fourth period.
Gallipolis sank 26 of 47 field goal attempts for 55.3 percent. At the line, GAHS hit two of three shots for 66.6 percent. The Blue Devils had 32 rebounds, led by Wes Jarrell’s eight snags. GAHS had 12 personal fouls and made 14 turnovers.
D. J. Drenner, 6-6 GAHS sophomore center-forward, made his first varsity appearance Wednesday evening.
Gallipolis won the freshman game 41-27 but Wellston won the JV game, 49-43.
In the freshman game, GAHS led 8-0, 13-6 and 23-14 at the quarter marks. Dan Armstrong led the GAHS yearlings with 11 points. Miles Cornwell and Colton Campbell each had 10 points. Noah Henry led Wellston with 19 points. Caleb Melvin added nine. GAHS improved to 3-7. Wellston dropped to 2-7.
In the JV game, GAHS led 9-7 after one period. The Blue Imps were up 20-19 at halftime but the Little Rockets outscored GAHS 18-6 in the third quarter enroute to a 49-43 victory. The GAHS reserves lost by six points, but were 13 of 26 from the foul line.
Matt Bailey led GAHS with nine points. Trevor McNeal added six .Bryan Hawk paced Wellston with 20 points. Caden Ervin added 11.
The win left Wellston with a 10-4 mark. GAHS dropped to 8-8.
