With the “big three” of Junior Michael Hall, Senior Reece Patton, and All Ohioan Evan French returning next year for Warren I can’t remember there being this much excitement/anticipation surrounding a season. The Warriors will up their competition level from last year visting a trio of private schools from the Columbus area as well as facing the Bulldogs of Athens the Patriots of Wheeling Park WV at home. Warren will travel to face DIV Final Four participant Lancaster Fairfield Christian Academy, DII Columbus Bishop Hartley, and 2013 DII Champs Columbus Bishop Watterson. The boys will be doing a lot of traveling this summer as well and should be well prepared for the upcoming season. Leffingwell will be greatly missed down low but look for senior Andrew Drayer to fill that void. 6’5 Junior Michael Hall will serve as fulltime pg this year after sharing duties with Evan Yabs this past season. With Athens and New Philadelphia returning mostly everyone this season it will be hard for the Warriors to repeat as Regional Champs but I believe their competitive schedule will help them greatly. I look for Warren to capture their second SEOAL crown in a row and via for another long postseason run.

Go Blue

Warren Warriors Summer Schedule

June 2 MC Shootout
6 John Glenn Scrimmage
13 RGU Shootout
15 Dennison Shootout
16 PHS Summer League
23 PHS Summer League
28 Miami Ohio Shootout
29 Wilmington Shootout
30 PHS Summer League
July 5 Bannon Park Classic

The Warriors have been mixing it up as far as personal. New faces and new opportunities abound. Blake Kidder 6'2 Junior looks solid. After a great sophomore year leading the Warrior JV squad to a 21-0 season, Kidder's athletism and jumping ability fit in well with the current varsity. His ability to defend and take care of the basketball will be key to his success.
In the middle Andrew Drayer has done his best "Leffingwell" impersonation, good tuff D in the paint and can do pretty much anything adequately(drive to the basket closing sec of Regional Final) Drayer though not as experienced as "Leff" if he can get close to Leffingwell's effort then the young man will have a senior year to remember.
Junior's Aaron Muzurkiwitz and Austin Henthorn bring energy and excitement to the floor. Warrior faithful that love the "ole school" tuff physical brand of ball are gonna love these 2 kids. Muzurkiwitz more defensive minded and Henthorn more offensive minded, but both play "both ends" of the court.
Marshall Church has shown improvement. The 6'5" senior will bring needed debth in the middle. Not an offensive threat but will physically challenge teams at the rim.

The Warriors played well today at the Rio Grande Shootout. Going 3-1 with wins over Point Pleasant, North Adams and Cols Harvest Prep. A close loss to Fairland. In wins over Point Pleasant and North Adams the Warriors trio of French, Hall and Patton shot lights out beyond the arc. In the North Adams contest Hall had a take to the rim after a NASTY crossover that end in a THUNDER Dunk that got the Warrior faithful up off their feet in a 25+ blowout win. In the loss to Fairland the difference in the game came down to end of game execution. In a game like this the inexperience of the young Warrior backcourt was on display. Once this talented group has been "coached up" and had an opportunity to gain a little experience I see them doing quite well. Hall 1/2 season playing in the backcourt, Kidder,Hentorn and Mazurkiwitz 1st year varsity players. Once the season starts this group of Juniors will be a team asset.
As usual Evan French was pretty much unguardable. Taking the ball to the rim has added a new dimension to the DII 1st team All State selections game. Teams trying to crowd that jump shot will be hard pressed to keep the Warriors talented senior from getting to the rim.
Andrew Drayer continued to impress with his "motor" and his hustle around the rim. Getting better finishing will make him a threat that teams will have to guard.
The usual summer bumps and bruises but today Aaron Mazurkiwitz suffered a day ending injury to the wrist on a tuff block/charge play under the basket. A summer game and this kid is playing his heart out taking charges. Great kid, great ball player and from what I hear a great student. Hope the injury isn't serious and Warrior Nation is hoping for a speedy recovery.

Did Evan, Michael, and Reece get a lot of playing time today? And who do you think will be the 5th starter this year along with Drayer and the other three Warrior?

Yes all 3 played extensively. Less motion and more isolation in the Warrior offense gives the added options to an already potent offensive attack. Don't be surprised if those other 2 starting spots will rotate according to team needs. Along with seniors Drayer and Church but Kidder, Henthorn and Mazurkiwitz are all in the running for those spots.

Missed Patton 4sure but a couple younger kids got exstensive playing time and I feel played their way into possible playing time this winter. Sophomore Luke Drayer and Freshman Kyler Dennis stepped up this summer and showed that both can contribute to this years team. With Mazurkiwitz and Henthorn injured, both youngsters got their feet wet and showed promise. Dennis is gonna be a good one 4sure and the littlest Drayer can push his way into the conversation for PT!

Wish more Warrior fans were in attendance at the BPC. Great atmosphere, great food, great music and best of all great end to a great summer of Warrior Basketball. The home standing Portsmouth Trojans and Dayton Northridge (with BPC director Coach Lisath) both had a decided atvantage with the fans attending. Next year we will show them how the BIG BAD BLUE travel!!

Nice to hear both of them got some playing time, assuming Dennis is a guard? Have any height coming up this year in the freshman class? I know we'll be losing a lot after this coming year.

Dayton didn't have any fans there....Anyways, Warren has one heck of a team........especially considering Reece wasn't able to attend the Classic. Wow. The Warriors keep a good team.

No they didn't have fans but because Coach Lisath is a HOMETOWN HERO as long as Dayton played ANYBODY but Portsmouth they were the crowd favorite.

Nice write-up about French in an edition of The Marietta Times this week, talks about what his Summer has been like and mentions Patton and Hall as well.

... excellent article - great to hear what not only Evan French has done and is doing to take his game to the next level, but that Michael Hall and Reece Patton are doing the same ... I have been getting updates on the Athens ball club all summer - those boys in Bulldog land are doing exactly the same thing, participating in ALL Star tourney's around the country ... there's a reason these two squads are neck and neck at #1 and #2 in the Elite 8 rankings - awesome stuff WHS95FAN - thank you for the update and link ...

No Problem Floyd, these past couples of months have been pretty rough, no basketball or football :122245 so it's always nice to read an article like that to have something to look forward to.

Who does warren have this year playing post? Leffingwell did a good job last year of taking up space, rebounding and scoring if needed. They have don't have to be able to score with the big 3, but they do need someone to guard and rebound, especially when they run into a team with a true scoring center. Seems this position is getting more rare as the games get faster and faster, but I believe it is one of the most important positions.

Andrew Drayer and Marshal Church will prolly split time in the post. The Miami Heat don't have a scoring threat in the paint. You're right about the game getting faster. Most teams try to get up the floor and attack b4 the defense has a chance to set up. French, Hall and Patton are all dangerous in the paint. When teams try to play man all 3 kids can make you pay severely. French & Hall have worked hard this summer on developing an inside game. French will be stronger than most that try to guard him. Hall's length allows him to take advantage when a guard tries to guard him and when teams ajust with size then a post will have the unenviable task of guarding him off the dribble. Any help will give French, Patton or Kidder open jump shots. All in all a tuff assignment for any team.

Coach Kaufman last season's Varsity Assistant will be the JV coach. Execellant coach especially on the defensive end of the floor. He teaches fundamentals and gets the most out of the kids. The JV team will be in good hands.
