Was scrolling on social media last night, a post popped up on my newsfeed. One of my friends had posted pictures of his kid (playing basketball) with captions saying "she is so good", "she scores double digits every game", and blah blah blah. This girl is in 8th grade and seems to me the only concern for the parents are how many points she can score. Someone commented "how many blocks does she average, how many steals, how many rebounds, how many assists?" Her father had no idea. With that being said, if I were a coach, I would be teaching this child what the game really is about. It's not about who scores the most. Its about winning, AS A TEAM!! Every team wants kids that can score night in and night out, but they also want ones that can rebound, assist, steal and block. That's what makes a great athlete. Basketball is a team sport, not an individual sport, and I have a feeling she is going to have to learn the hard way as she enters high school.

I'm just glad the dad is even interested in what his kid is doing. Many are not. "If I were coach" I'd be happy for that, and realize that it's my job to teach and prioritize those other things you mentioned. If parents knew all those things you talked about we wouldn't need coaches. So, I say be happy for the parental support and allow parents to be parents without expecting them to be like a coach.

Sports writers don’t do stories about kids who score 6 points grab 8 rebounds and get 8 assts. they’ll write the story about the kid that scores 20 and has 1 reb 2 assts. also any of the all league voting for most conferences and look at the top 5 in scoring. That’s almost always your 1st team all league. If you’re 5’11 and score 25 a game colleges will come to watch you. If you’re 5’11 and score 9 a game not a sniff. It’s the sports center culture we live in. I don’t like it but it’s just the way it is. I always teach mine to do what it takes to win and the rest will fall into place.

My boys do a lot of talking about how to best win games at various family functions. Thats why Southern and Trimble are so dominant right now. Especially Southern at home. Jeffy has come up with a defensive plan for that gym that is hard to beat.

I never said there are none playing. But I've known many who scored more than 25 a game and no colleges came looking. Doesn't mean a 5'11" boy can't play at that level, but few get recruited from what I've seen.

Carl would bench anyone who's parents talked about how many points they scored. No taking charges, rebounds, steals yea they could brag about those things. But don't even mention individual scoring.

I agree but you won’t get very far with a whole team full of them. Still need the players that do things that actually do show up in the score book

This is spot on, one of the reasons I've told my son, play hard defense, box out every play, take care of the ball and give 100% will get you more playing time than anything and the rest will come your way. I've seen this exact thing happen, kid can score from about anywhere but doesn't play a lick of defense, defense travels there's some nights your shot just isn't there. I won't lie if I'm unable to go to a game first thing I do ask is how many points but my next question is how many points did you give up, then I'll ask about rebounds and steals.

I think there are still a few of us that teach this at home but like I said before with the espn era it’s getting fewer and further between. Let’s face it every team has to have players in certain roles and somebody has to score the ball. Nothing wrong with taking pride in that if your team depends on it. Just have to compete In the other aspects of the game as well.
