Amazing Statistic About SE District Final 4 Wins

Post by trojandave »

The Portsmouth Trojans have 12 wins in the Final 4, with the most recent coming in the 2012 D3 state semifinals, that being a 74-66 win over Ottawa-Glandorf. That was the last Final 4 win by a SE district school. Since then, 4 schools, Ironton (2013), Warren (2013), Lynchburg Clay (2016), and Fairland (2017) have lost in the state semifinals.

The statistic that is quite amazing is that Portsmouth has as many Final 4 wins as the SOC2, SVC, OVC, FAC, TVC, and SHAC combined, and only includes SE district schools that are current members of any of those conferences.

Portsmouth's Final 4 wins: 1931(2), 1934(1), 1961(2), 1978(2), 1980(1), 1988(2), 1990(1), 2012(1)

SOC2: Wheelersburg(2) 1984, 1995, South Webster (2) 2006, Oak Hill 2009 (2) 2009
SVC: Unioto (1) 1991
OVC: Ironton (1) 2005
FAC: Chillicothe (2) 2008
TVC: Nelsonville (1) 1952, Belpre (1) 1993
SHAC: None.....appearances: Lynchburg Clay 1993, 2016, North Adams (1996), Whiteoak (2002), Eastern Brown (2002)

Portsmouth's overall record in the state tournament is 16-11, which is tied with Middletown for the 4th most wins in State Tournament History, and the 27 games played in the State Tournament is 3rd all time. PHS is 8-1 in their last 9 state semifinal games, the lone loss coming in 2011 to Cleveland Central Catholic 58-47.

Note: To this day, anyone who watched the 1996 semifinal game (I was there) between North Adams and Casstown Miami East would most likely concede that the Green Devils should have won that game, with the winning shot by Casstown coming well after the buzzer. NA was 26-0 coming into the game, and it's a shame their season ended that way.

Yep, I was there at the North Adams game also. The shooter had just set his feet and was starting his shooting motion lift when the buzzer went off. That was bad.

Whiteoak and Eastern Brown we’re both in the Final 4 in 2001....Whiteoak led by 11 over Russia but couldn’t hang on. No player over 6’2 in team. Russia had a big time 6’8 kid. Eastern Brown was there and followed ASVSM in the locker room and a lot of those kids got pictures.

Ironman92: Whiteoak and Eastern Brown were in the 2002 state tournament, not 2001. Their games are listed on www.ohsaa.org in the 2002 results. Eastern Brown lost to Columbus Bishop Ready 80-62, while Whiteoak lost to Russia 58-46. Ready lost to Bellville Clear Fork and Russia lost to Delphos St.John's in their respective state championship games.

Don't forget my Piketon Redstreaks in 2009 with an appearance, ironically losing to Cleveland Central Catholic as well.

Jimmy the Greek: The list I have provided includes only wins in the Final 4. The reason I listed the appearances for the SHAC in the Final 4 was because it is the only league of the 6 that has never had a win in the Final 4, so I gave them credit for at least having some teams that made it there.

You left out Sheridan last year

Pol Pot: Sheridan did indeed make the Final 4 last year, but they didn't win their semifinal game. As I replied to Jimmy the Greek, the thread is about Final 4 wins, not appearances, but I cut some slack to the SHAC because they don't have any Final 4 wins, the only conference of the 6 that doesn't have any. Sheridan is a member of the MVL, and is a SE district school, but the thread doesn't include all the schools in that conference because most of them are East District schools. Not all the SHAC schools are in the SE district (Ripley), but there are no Final 4 wins among the SE district schools that are in the SHAC.

Perhaps I shouldn't have listed the appearances for the SHAC because I think that is misleading some to include appearances instead of only Final 4 wins.
