Warren 64 Maysville 72 a Regional Final

Warren 64
Maysville 72 a final

... Warren was moving up the MVL league rankings in the past 2 weeks having dispensed of New Lexington 54-46 OT in the D2 district final game, took care of Tri Valley in the Regional Semi 65-49 ... Saturday afternoon the Warriors of Coach Maddox took on the 3rd and final obstacle standing in the way of making a trip to Dayton for the The Show , Final Four in D2 - the Maysville Panthers ... Maysville had just beaten in exciting fashion Bishop Hartley 50-49 with a 3 pointer as time was running out by their best of the best - sr. Alex Bobb ... in THAT one the Panthers were down 13 pts. 15-28 at the half ... outscored Hartley 35-21 in the final 50 cents (2 quarters) of the game to move on to take on Warren Local in the D2 Regional finale ...

... great crowd! both schools were well represented in the stands - the way high school hoops SHOULD be! after watching Harvest Prep (under 100 fans) and Malvern (400) play in the D3 opener on Saturday - it made me smile to SEE these numbers in the Basketball :30 finale' ... as a Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line kinda guy it was good to see Warren's 6-7 post player get the opening tip to a breaking Julian Stadelman for a Warren 2-0 lead right off the opening tip ... Warren continued to get ALL starters involved in the offense out of the D, Warren scored on 4 transition buckets in the qtr. Jacob Sealey with a pair of transition 2 pters (4pts) , Stadelman with the opening tip & a drive to the rim for 2 (4pts) , missing from the Tri Valley game was points from Connor Barry, Barry found the range from 3 for a trey & a transition bucket (5pts) in the opening period ... Trent Taylor coming off of a 27 pt/10 rb game vs Tri Valley in the Semi final, got on the board with 1/3 from the FT line , Hayden Wells came off the bench to hit a pair free throws (2pts) - a good opening quarter for the Warriors ... on the Maysville end of the floor, the Panthers of Coach Brown looked to get the job done from behind the arc as MHS launched 5 treys in the qtr., always good to have one the best 3 point shooters in high school hoops doing the "launching" - the senior shooting guard Alex Bobb responded with 2 treys (6pts) ... Maysville got support from the only players other than Big Shot Bobb to score vs Hartley - sophomores Gator Nichols with a drive and finish (2pts) and 6-2 soph Jordyn Watson getting on the napkin stat sheet with a transition 2pts ... Warren 16 Maysville 10 after 1 ... in the 2nd period, Warren had to go to its bench early as Connor Barry was called for his 3rd foul, the jr. took a seat replaced by fellow junior Nick Cressey who responded with 2 fgs on a strip & score to go with a drive, pump fake and finish (4pts) ... the jr. role player was able to hold Maysville's 2nd scoring option Gator Nichols in check in the 2nd (0 pts) ... Warren methodically played a solid offensive and defensive 2nd qtr. with Cressey off the bench for 4 pts/ Hayden Wells 6-5 jr. off the bench added 2 points on a stickback bucket, Tyson Cochran jr. found himself open for an in the paint 2pter - in all the Warren bench accounted for 8pts in the 2nd and 10 pts in the half ... Warren scoring options #1, #2 did scoring things - Stadelman with a drive to the rim for 2pts and 2/2 from the line (4pts) ... Taylor added 2 pts on an inbounds score to go with a floater across the front of the rim for 2 pts (4pts/5 in the half) ...Warren's D was equally effective in the 2nd , holding Maysville to 7 pts - Bobb with his 3rd triple of the game plus a midrange jumper from the foul line extended (5 pts/11 in the half) ... the only other points from the MHS side was a putback basket by 6-2 sr. Coen Fink (2pts) ... Warren 32 Maysville 17 at intermission ... Warren had shot 61% from the floor in the opening 2 qtrs. forced 7 Maysville turnovers ... picked up 10 bench points ... 24 points in the paint ... Maysville conversely shot 29% from the floor, only turned the Warriors over 4 times, only 8 points in the paint for the Panthers ... apparently Coach Brown & Co. had the Warriors RIGHT WHERE THEY WANTED THEM ... Coach Brown needs to bottle whatever he has said to the Panther players these last 2 games (coming back from a 13 pts halftime deficit vs Hartley to win) ... before the 3rd period started, looking at the scoreboard I leaned over told Lou Horvath "we've seen this before Lou" ... I added "50 cents does not four quarters make" ... I thought I was watching a rerun of the Maysville /Hartley game - exactly same scenario played out - Maysville outscored Warren 27-13 in the 3rd ... MHS went 5/8 from behind the arc ... all 5 starters for the Panthers contributed - vs Hartley soph Jordyn Watson scored 11 in the 3rd/18 in the 2nd half ... vs Warren, Watson led the charge with 10 pts including a pair of triples ... soph Kane Roehig 5pts/1 trey ... Gator Nichols 4pts/ 1 trey ... Wesley Armstead scored for the first time in 2 games hitting a triple (3pts) ... Bobb was kept in the gym as the senior had no treys but put up 5 points ... Warren was forced into 6 turnovers , still shot 69% from the floor (6/9) not nearly enough as the Panthers had turned the score, the momentum around and had their fans in an uproar - high school basketball ... Warren 45 Maysville 44 after 3 ... the tide had turned ... the "Hartley scenario" was playing out and not a thing Warren could do to stop it as Maysville outscored Warren 28 to 19 in the final quarter of action ... once Maysville took the lead they didn't relinquish it ... Warren had the lead for over 24 minutes of the game clock, unfortunately for the Warrior faithful it wasn't at the end of the game ... some looking back / end of the game napkin stats to scrutinize ... Warren had 9 fouls in the opening 2 qtrs/ Maysville 7 ... in the 2nd half Warren was called for 21 fouls vs Maysville 7 ... Warren shot 61% from the floor for the game 25/41 vs Maysville's 42% (21/49) ... Maysville shot 31 FTs to the Warriors 18 on the game ... Warren was 5/13 from 3 point land vs Maysville hitting 11/29 from Court St. 15 pts to 33 pts from behind the three point line ...Maysville outscored Warren 55-32 coming out of halftime ... Congratulations to Coach Brown & the Maysville Panthers who ARE heading to the Final Four in Dayton ... Maysville 72 Warren 64 a final ...

Good writeup! Like most I only got to see the Maysville half on NFHS but it was certainly impressive. You shoot 61% and lose! A lot of the freethrows were the result of Warren intentionally fouling to get the ball back. Overall, I thought the officiating was pretty good.
The MVL should be exciting next year with Coshocton, Maysville, New Lex, and Tri-Valley returning most of their players. Of course come tourney time Maysville, New Lex, and TV will probably all be in different divisions thanks to the OHSAA.

Also, Warren will be right there for either TV or Maysvile.

Had to take a few days to digest this one... Not sure this is a game I can just simply put behind me. After we took a 15 point lead into the half, I turned to my good buddy and said "We're goin to Dayton" then the second half happened. What felt like a coronation in the first half turned into a funeral as the last 16 minutes of the game and the life of my Warren Warriors drained away...

Warren point guard played with a broken hand. Happened 2nd half of TV game. Maysville clearly earned the win, though. Great season Warren !

Always tough when you're in a game like that and lose. Losing Taylor next year will definitely hurt but will be interesting to see who steps up to take his place.

Will need to get more offense from Lupardus/Wells and off of the JV squad I liked the strength/tenacity of Hilverding ... not the 6-7 size that they have to replace but hopefully as you say others step up offensively as well on the perimeter.

Amazing there’s No talk of Maysville. They represent both the SE and Eastern District for a State championship Tomorrow 🏆
