Gallia Academy 42 final
The "pfloyd tour" in the "Week that IS" tipped off in the French City, home to the beautiful Festival of Lights - Gallipolis ... I had seen both Warren & Gallia Academy multiple times via livestream hudl feeds throughout the lead-up to tonight's opening game for both teams - the Blue Devils of Coach Harrison brought good size in senior post player 6-7 Cade Mock (much improved in handling the ball/getting to the rim/ finishing - I look for Cade Mock to have an excellent senior campaign) 6-5 sophomore forward Gabe Hammons (shows a nice on the block game along with being able to get to rim via baseline drives) ... tonight showcased freshman PG Ty Reed in his first regular season game running the show/handling game pressure ( from the scrimmage videos & the first half of tonights contest - Reed is a keeper) ... for Warren scrimmages showed that the Warriors miss the 6-7 inside presence of graduated post player Trent Taylor - 6-7 in the paint allows mistakes in the defense to be "covered" by size in the paint ... offensively, 6-7 senior in the paint gives the offense a direction to turn to if shots aren't falling on the perimeter ... hard to beat a 6-7 inside offensive/defensive weapon in paint ... in the preseason the Warriors had mixed reviews on being able to consistently score the ball ... Warren returns everyone off of last years regional final team (minus Taylor) - lots of varsity experience ...led by one of the best PG/SGs in SEOhio - Julian Stadelman ... Warriors opened the season - looking to find answers offensively while continuing to be one of the best defensive teams in SEOhio ...
... Gallia in the opening quarter had 4 of Coach Harrison's five starters dent the napkin stat sheet led by 6-7 sr Cade Mock's 3 points /freshman Ty Reed hitting a midrange runner 2 pts/3pts in the qtr ... soph Rees Toler added 2pts from in the paint as soph Gabe Hammons added a nice drive baseline for 2 pts ... Warren countered with sr. Connor Barry's drive baseline 2pts/ back to back transition buckets by Julian Stadelman to go with 2 pts on a drive & finish (6pts) ... this years big man in the middle for the Warriors 6-3 sr. Chase Lupardus scored on a drive & lefthanded finish to go with 2/2 from the line (4pts) ... the Warriors added their lone 3 pointer in the qtr (1/8) by sr. Tyson Cochran from the left corner to close out the Warrior scoring ... Warren 15 Gallia Academy 10 after 1 ... the second period started strong for the Blue Devils as fr. Grant Owens drained a trey from the right wing (3pts) , Mock made his size/presence felt in the paint with a nice turn around 6 footer in the paint, followed by a transition layup for the 6-7 big man ... Ty Reed drove the lane for 2pts at the rim ... for Warren, Connor Barry opened the qtr with a triple ... Stadelman added 4/4 from the FT line ... a Cade Mock drive & one for GAHS forced Coach Maddox to call a Warren timeout 21-21 with 3:21 to play in the qtr. ...Gallia finished out the period with another Mock drive (2pts/9 in the qtr) and a 3 ball from jr. 2 guard, Ethan Rose with 1:41 on the clock (27-25 GAHS) ... the Blue Devils continued to put Stadelman for WHS on the line - the senior hit 3 of 4 more charity stripe attempts (7/8 in the qtr) ... the Warriors got production off the bench from 6-5 sr Hayden Wells - the big man knocked down 2 straight putback buckets to take the Warriors into intermission ... Warren 33 Gallia Academy 27 after 2 ... the opening 2 quarters showed us that GAHS has found its' PG in freshman Ty Reed, smooth with the ball, an offensive threat while being able to start the offense and distribute the rock to Mock/Hammons and the shooters on the perimeter - Owens/Rose ... Warren had gone 2/14 from the perimeter in the opening half - the questions concerning scoring remained ... inside scoring? bigs Lupardus (4pts)/Wells (4pts) ... the first 2-3 minutes of the 3rd quarter are key in any game ... adjustments at halftime ... Warren came out making defensive adjustments to disrupt the Blue Devils "flow" in their offense - take the freshman PG out of the offense by keeping the ball out of his hands/ cutting off the floor general from his team ... if the offense has to start with the ball in the hands of one of the other 4 players - the offensive flow is not there ... add to the equation - put the ball in players hands who aren't accustomed to handling the ball under pressure/force everyone besides the true PG to make decisions with the ball ... the goal -turn GAHS over, create offense out of the defense ... Warren forced Gallia Academy to turn the ball over 12 times in the 3rd period ... 5 of the turnovers were unforced errors (players having to handle the ball under pressure/having to make a pass) ... the Warren defense held Gallia to 2 fgs in the 3rd (4pts) ... Warren put up 25 pts ... 3 transition buckets ... Connor Barry solved the perimeter scoring issue by putting up 13 points / 3 treys included ... Stadelman added a triple /a pair of transition buckets at the rim / Nick Cressey 2pts/ Jacob Sealey 2pts ... Warren 56 Gallia Academy 33 after 3 ... Warren scored 2 points in the 4th on jr Caleb Tullius' transition bucket ... Gallia picked up a 2 pointer at the rim from Hammons/ Ethan Rose drained his 2nd trey of the game (5pts in the qtr/8 for the game)/ the young freshman PG Reed added a smooth transition bucket (7pts) for the Blue Devils ... Warren 58 Gallia Academy 42 a final ...

...Gallia Academy IS improved over last season imo - 2 solid inside players with size in Mock 6-7/Hammons 6-5 ... scoring at all 5 positions and off the bench ... AND they have their PG for now and the next 4 years in Ty Reed ... right now Reed is a PG doing PG things- distributing the ball, getting others involved in the offense - you can see that the GAHS offense is much more "connected" than in the past ... as he gets more varsity experience he will learn to be a "scorer" as well - the youngster is going to be a good one ... Coach Harrison's Blue Devils started tonight playing Warren my #2 preseason pick, they will follow this up with #1 Meigs Saturday night ...Gallia went 8 deep - 2 seniors/1 freshman/2 sophs as starters ... off the bench - 1 jr/2 freshmen ... look for the Blue Devils to keep improving each week ...

... the Warriors are offensively a different team in 2024-25 ... being down a 6-7 , four year player , 16ppg/10+rpg is a tough get ... BUT returning everyone else from last years squad - seniors WITH varsity experience/post season experience and 4+ years under the guidance of one of the best coaching staffs in SEOhio - the Warriors will find themselves - new roles/more scorers that in the past because they have to be ... the one thing that isn't changing - defense - solid, on ball pressure D, everyone knows what to do, where to be, how important communication is - if anything, look for the Warrior D to be even better than in the past as NOW they can't afford to make mistakes out front - no 6-7 behind them to clean it up ... big tests this week continue as Warren travels to Sutton Gymnasium in Marietta Friday night to take on the Tigers of Coach Gardner - they too have to live life minus a big in the post (6-8 Alex Kendall graduated) ... WHS take on Chillicothe at the Warrior Coliseum Saturday night - a solid opening week for the Warriors ...
