Went to an interesting basketball game last night which ended with a 5 point home win.
Some game Facts:
Home team 9-19 from free throw line 4 total team fouls 1 each quarter 1 in last minute of the game because they had 4 to give.
Visiting team 1-2 from the foul line 19 team fouls 2 or 3 when they were trying to stop the clock

Fun fact. Referees don’t care about the foul count. When someone fouls they call it. So don’t foul so much

First, I agree most referees don't care about the foul count. They do their best to call the game.
Facts of life.
How a referee calls a game can have a significant impact on the outcome. Allow extra physical contact? Call the game tight? How referees "manage" a game. Also, there are times when referees exhibit a bias. Again, just the cards that are dealt. But I believe most often a lopsided foul count is up to the players, and nothing nefarious with respect to officials.
