... the Week that IS ! - can go to basketball games 6 days this week !!! M, T, Th, F, S, and S !!! with a possibility of getting eyes on 16 varsity games ! not all of the teams at the Battle in the 740 at Shawnee State University on Sat. & Sun. are SE Ohio teams, not all are boys games BUT high school basketball is in full swing Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line ... classics this weekend , the following weekend AND the weekend immediately following Christmas !!! Hoops overload?!!! - I think not ...

Thanks for all the basketball coverage you provide pfloyd. 1st-time poster, but a long time follower on here. A little more free time on my hands in what I will call semi-retirement...

I still think you've got Southeastern, Notre Dame and Portsmouth West too low. They each have some very nice wins, are unblemished in the loss column and most of those wins by impressive margins.
I think you've got Portsmouth too high, but to be fair they have not played a real one yet. Piketon has been blasted in their last 3 and are too high. I think Western is too high. They are dangerous and can knock off a lot of teams, but I don't see them having the consistency of a team in the top 20. Time will tell on that one.
Lynchburg starts off 1-2 and moves up 5-6 spots in your rankings? That one stood out as a head scratcher. Also, what in the world is going on with New Boston? It did sound like you initially thought they could be really good with a few new move-ins. Losing by 20+ to West Union and Oak Hill could make for a long season

hoopsnut1979 ... the preseason rankings were made before getting eyes on teams, Lynchburg was one of those teams that had a lot returning but I still wasn't sold them in my preseason rankings BUT after getting a lot of looks at Coach Pertuset's Mustangs in scrimmages, and the SHAC preview and even in the loss to Fairfield they played well even if the final score doesn't show it ... beat Whiteoak - I try to look at how teams play even in a losing effort & WHO they played well in a losing effort against - I felt I had Lynchburg too low in the Preseason rankings ... SE moved up where I feel they can continue to move up with meaningful W's ... SE takes on Unioto Tuesday night - THAT will tell me a lot ... West and ND ? they are in positions to prove they need to be higher - when teams get into the top 30 it's harder to move up unless they beat teams above them - they too were ranked too low in the preseason - West with the nice add of Logan Wolfenbarker from NW ... they play solid D, under Coach McClanahan the Senators have not been an easy W for opponents - usually the West schedule early is vs opponents that they should beat and DO ... I moved them up with the addition of Wolfenbarker & more the up tick in offense he provides to go with the D - the meat of the schedule comes after Christmas with NY, Waverly,Valley, Minford on the menu ... New Boston losing to West Union - no explanation ... yep I THOUGHT with the move in size in the paint in Ian Spiess along with Wyatt McNeil transferring from Portsmouth West they would do better but they lost a guard to Portsmouth just as ND lost 3 players to Portsmouth (I thought that would hurt ND more than it has so far) .. NB played well in the Western Pike scrimmage ... gave them the benefit of the doubt apparently "where pfloyd was wrong" ... life only gets harder for the Tigers as they have Symmes Valley & Northwest this week followed by Manchester/ Western/Southern/ISJ ... I had an "tweener" ranking that I did on the big board after the 1/2 week of games - that I didn't put out there - it reflected some adjustments so that I didn't make giant leaps for some teams (at least on paper for me to look at in making THIS weeks rankings) - maybe in hindsight I should have posted THAT 1/2 week ranking as well ... thanks for your input!

Always look forward to your rankings! Glad to see my Senators getting some love and being talked about. Coach McClanahan during his time at PWHS has kept our guys in some games and we have a good offense to go along with the D this year and I think we can cause some teams problems this year!

Yes! I know all Kentucky high schools are required to submit certain stats after each game to the KHSAA Scoreboard website. I believe there is some sort of penalty if statistics aren’t submitted. It’s a very good website. I wish the OHSAA would adopt something similar.

Oh, I agree that Lynchburg looks like they're going to be much better this year. I watched the SOSA stream of their game with Fairfield and minus one really bad stretch at the end of the 3rd were in that game and giving Fairfield trouble. That said, they also just lost to Green who is nearly 20 spots below them.
What are your early thoughts on the strength of each league so far? My early eye test and scores make me think that the OVC and SOC are a little deeper and better than I had originally thought. I feel like the SVC and TVC are down a little, and the SHAC I'm getting mixed signals from. It's early, and I'm sure there will be some games coming that force me to reevaluate as well.

Green beating Lynchburg by 8 pts ... didn't see this one, would have bet on the Mustangs BUT Green has a solid junior scorer in 6-4 Jonathan Knapp - I didn't see a run down of the game... you get in games that are back and forth scoring wise, good matchups for the opposition, foul trouble, keep it close into the 4th qtr. a turnover or two, have to foul situations ... or maybe the other teams just has your number LOL ... we've had top 8 teams get beaten by teams I've ranked in the 50s - it happens ... that's basketball ...

As far as my take on the league strength within the various leagues themselves? I think the FAC is the strongest its' been top to bottom for awhile with Jackson, Hillsboro, Miami Trace, Chillicothe, Wash CH and McClain is much improved under Coach Haines - one of those leagues where you don't get a night off within league play ... but if you look at the coaching within the FAC it says a lot as to WHY they are solid top to bottom Jackson - Coach Morrow & great staff, Hillsboro - Coach Howland, Miami Trace Coach Ackley, Wash CH Coach Bartruff, and McClain with Coach Haines ... an excellent basketball league imo ... SOC 3 with Minford, South Webster, Wheelersburg, Waverly, Portsmouth West and Valley excellent, competitive top to bottom ... the SOC 2 might not be as strong compared to other leagues but within the league it will be extremely competitive - Western Pike, Eastern Pike, Northwest, Symmes Valley, Oak Hill, South Gallia ... I think the SHAC is as competitive within the 2 divisions as its' been in awhile top to bottom with the way they set up their league play (playing each team in your division 2x and the other SHAC division 1x) - overall you will be playing a solid opponent almost every night out in league play ... in SHAC 1 North Adams, Eastern Brown head the list with Lynchburg much improved ... Ripley/West Union ... SHAC 2 Fairfield leads the way with Fayetteville right there with them ... Peebles/Manchester/ Whiteoak all have athletes to be competitive and force the top teams to not think they can take a night off especially on the road ... the coaching in the SHAC is top notch as well with Coach Beucler (EB), Coach McCormick (NA) , Coach Pertuset (Lynchburg), Coach Stewart (Fayetteville), Manchester (Coach Kingsolver), Coach Arey (Peebles), I believe it's Coach Bennington now a Ripley all of these coaches are vested in now in the schools/programs ... the TVC imo for what that's worth is down overall but will be competitive within the TVC as a whole - Meigs is my pick of the lot BUT Vinton County -Coach Kight & his outstanding staff - WILL give them all they can handle by the style of game they will play vs Meigs ... Nelsonville York Coach Gabriel doesn't get the press that other coaches do but Coach Gabriel is one of the better coaches in SEOhio , Athens just knocked off NY - competitive within the league for sure ... River Valley & Wellston are improved this season as well ... TVC Hocking imo opinion is down compared to competing vs other leagues but within the TVC Hocking - Coach Leasure is a quality coach for Belpre has good pieces, Eastern Rdsville - athletes ... Southern - Coach Caldwell has a really good group of basketball players this season again , Waterford will be good within the Hocking, Alexander only lost to Belpre by 5 pts will be competitive within the league... Federal Hocking is down compared to other Federal Hocking teams but the Lancers under Coach Thompson & Coach Tolson are excellent coaches/teachers of the game - they have a couple of solid pieces in Cameron Joy & Mosiah Cottrill - I expect they will improve throughout the season ... TSL - Marietta ( Coach Gardner) and Warren (Coach Maddox) ... 2 of the best teams in SEOhio compared to any other team in SEOhio ... Point Pleasant ??? one of those foreign teams who has beaten both Warren and Marietta in TSL play in the leagues inception the last 2 years I believe ... hard to play in Mothman Land if you are the visiting team ... Fort Frye is down this season ... OVC a solid league and has been for years with Fairland being the team to beat seemingly forever ... Chesapeake is excellent this season under Coach Ater, Fairland is a contender for the top spot again under Coach Speed , Gallia Academy has started 0-2 vs Meigs & Warren (95% of SEOhio would have started 0-2 had they opened with Meigs & Warren ) I like the pieces Coach Harrison has this season - freshmen PG in Ty Reed, big man Cade Mock, good shooting role players - Coach Harrison's Blue Devils will be a team to not want to play after Christmas going into the New Year ... on paper everyone is solid in the OVC Ironton even without Terry have excellent pieces - led by Braden Schreck & Ashton Layne ... South Point just beat Portsmouth by 2 on a buzzer beater - supper competitive season ... Rock Hill has good athletes with size ... MVL - only 2 teams in the SE District - New Lexington & Sheridan - both excellent teams - New Lex returning everyone from last season, district finals team ... the MVL may just be the strongest league in the area - besides New Lex - final 4 last season Maysville, Tri Valley district finalist, John Glenn, Morgan - teams coming out of the MVL are battle tested and ready for post season play ... same can be said for the MSL - the mid state league plays outstanding basketball year in year out ... Logan Elm (Coach Dropsey), Circleville (Coach Callahan), Fairfield Union (Coach Shaeffer) to go with Bloom Carroll, Liberty Union, etc. LE/Roundtown/FU will be tough games for any team in SE Ohio ... Logan in the OCC - remains to be seen - lost to Pickerington Central by 30-40 pts ... they will be improved this season under new head coach Coach Hayes ... Newark Friday night in the OCC then take on Vinton County at Logan Saturday night - that will tell me a little about how LHS compares to other teams in SEOhio ... I'll see Logan again after Christmas at the Spartan Classic at Alexander High School vs Waverly ...those might be the only games I'll watch Logan this season due to their OCC schedule ...

... alrighty that's my take so far this season on the leagues our teams play in throughout Southern/Southeast Ohio ...

Peebles is in Shac1 with Eastern,North Adams West Union and Lynchburg. Ripley is in Shac2 with Manchester,Fairfield, Whiteoak, and Fayetteville Some teams who are on the edge of divisions change every few years. Peebles has been in big school division for a couple of years now.
