Warren 77
Marietta 59 a final

... the Battle for Washington County supremacy , first place in the TSL ... bragging rights ... however you wanted to frame it this one was going to be a slobber-knocker ... a physical battle which saw Marietta get into the bonus all 4 quarters, Warren 3 qtrs ... a player on each team fouled out ... Marietta had a 10 man rotation , Warren 10 ... Marietta put Warren on the free throw line for 23 attempts, Warren not to be outdone, said hold my "koolaid" and allowed Marietta 30 FT attempts ... Warren 77 Marietta 59 a final ...

The Tigers of Coach Gardner, jumped out early with 3 three pointers in the opening quarter 1 each for 6-2 jr. Brayden Jones, 6-2 jr Zaiden Wittekind, and off bench 6-4 jr Braiden Plaugher ... with 1:03 remaining in the 1st, Warren could muster but 3 points - a Jacob Sealey 1/2 from the line and a shot down low from 6-3 sr Chase Lupardus (2pts) ... the Tigers had raced out to a 15-3 , 12 point advantage in the Coliseum led by 6-4 sr. Junior Bass's 6 pts all down on the blocks , Wittekind added 5pts, Jones & Plaugher 3 each ... Warren looked like it hadn't played in 2 weeks - which it hadn't due to the snowmagedon of last week - shots inside/outside were just a little long, a little short ... trailing by 12, the Warriors went to Mr. Reliable , 6-1 sr. PG/SG Julian Stadelman who got into the paint for 2pts to make the score 17-5 ... sr. 6-2 Nick Cressey added 2/4 from the line before Stadelman scored on a strip & finish at the rim bucket to end the quarter ... Marietta 17 Warren 9 after 1 ... When I'm asked about a Coach Maddox coached Warren Warriors team, in any given year my first thoughts are physical, tough, fundamentally sound man-to-man defense ... when the ball "ain't" falling you rely on the D to jump start the offense - Warren applied straight physical, man-to-man D ... AND got called for a bunch of fouls that put Marietta at the line ... often in the bonus situation, in most cases this would be an issue, one that would normally see the opposing team adding to their lead ... but in the situation last night, putting MHS on the line served a couple purposes - kept Marietta from scoring fgs (the Tigers had but 3 fgs in the 2nd Trey Hawkins, Bass with 2/4pts) ...secondly if Marietta isn't hitting their FTs it keeps the Tigers off the scoreboard all together! (in the 2nd the Tigers were 3/11 from the line) ... while the Tigers were leaving points on the floor , the Warriors were doing something that they have struggled to do all season so far - WHS was getting points from anyone not named Stadelman - Jacob Sealey took the lid off the basket drilling a 3 from the left wing, , Connor Barry added a long 2 pter, Colin Anthony took a Stadelman dime and drilled a smooth trey from the left wing ... Chase Lupardus, who has rounded into the Warriors #2 scoring option, grabbed 2 shots off the mark putting them both backup for pts. (4pts) ... at 4:05 in the period Warren tied the score at 20-20 as Stadelman hit the front end of two ... sinking the 2nd WHS had battled back to take a 21-20 lead ... Warren outscored Marietta 13-6 the rest of the quarter as Stadelman did Stadelman things finishing the frame with 11 pts including back to back 3's /15pts in the half ... Warren 33 Marietta 26 after 2 ... if you're Marietta going in at intermission you have to be saying "alright, we didn't get shots on goal in the 2nd (9 pts), we shot horribly from the FT line AND YET we're only down 7 - it can't get any worse" ... the BB gods said "hold my koolaid" ... Marietta came out in the 3rd - scored but 2 fgs (1 each from Owen Riley/Junior Bass) ... went 2/9 from the foul line ... had 3 turnovers ... 6 pts total ... worse ... Warren under the Marietta full court trapping D turned the ball over 4 times in the 3rd but continued to put up points on the scoreboard ... at 4:41 left in the 3rd WHS led 41-28 ... by 2:25 on the clock 45-30 ... Stadelman added 2 more triples and a drive to the rim (8pts in the qtr/23 for the gm) ... Lupardus/Barry/Wells /Anthony each with a 2pter ... a dagger was inserted as Tyson Cochran dropped a trey from the right wing ... after being down 15-3 Warren had outscored Marietta 49-17 in 17:03 of playing time ... Warren 52 Marietta 32 after 3 ... Coach Gardner/Coach Warner for Marietta are a couple of the best coaches in SEOhio, they coach/teach for 32 minutes every game win or lose ... the Tigers didn't quit ... getting the score down to a 13 pt Warrior lead with 3:01 to play in the 4th ... Trey Hawkins for MHS had 8 pts in the qtr, Bass added 4pts/16 for the game ... 13 pts came off the bench for MHS in the 4th Logan Grosklos a trey (3pts), Owen Riley 4pts, Kobe Alexander 3 pts, Chuck Merrill 2, Trent McVey 1/2 from the line ... a 27 pts quarter for the Tigers, almost their entire output for the opening 3 qtrs ( side note MHS went 8/10 from the FT line in the 4th) ... Warren lost the 4th period 25-27 ... but won the Battle of Washington County/ tied Marietta for first place in the TSL avenging the loss back in early December to the Tigers ... scoring in the 4th for WHS 10 pts for Julian Stadelman / 34 for the game, Lupardus 4pts/12 for the gm, Nick Cressey 2 pts, Hayden Wells 3 pts/5 for the game but more importantly Wells got the start, drew the assignment of defending Zaiden Wittekind for MHS, Wells did an outstanding job holding Wittekind to 7 pts ... the 6-5 sr. post player for Warren turned in his best all around game of the season, nonstop hustle, crashed the boards, made himself available on passes by going to the ball - an all around excellent game by the senior ... Hudson Elzey, 6-2 jr. entered off the bench to get 5 pts ... in all the Warrior bench put up 18 points on the night ... Warren 77 Marietta 59 a final

... this was probably the best TEAM game played by Warren all season ... still had "the man" Julian Stadelman - he will always be "the man", simply one of the best scorers in all of Southern/Southeast Ohio (going to be a great matchup of Stadelman & Minford's Myles Montgomery at SSU this weekend! Montgomery on his way to reaching the 2000 pt milestone in February/ Stadelman over 1000 pt in his career) ... the Warriors have been trying to replace the 18 ppg scoring of graduated 6-7 post player Trent Taylor - can't be done! not with a single player ... if they can get it via "team" that's ALL they need to be as outstanding a TEAM as last seasons Regional final team ... last night vs Marietta - Sealey 4, Cressey 4, Barry 4, Wells 5, Anthony 6, Cochran 3, Elzey 5 = 31 pts is BETTER THAN the 18 ppg the Warriors needed to find ... no one has to be a hero, EVERYONE just has to contribute/ be the threat that THEY ARE ...the TEAM threat that those players provide gives the offense - 3 point shooting, shots off the dribble at the rim, in the paint on putbacks, transition buckets - that's better than "one guy" as good as Taylor was THIS TEAM scoring is a "transformer in a basketball uniform" ... in a 10 man rotation IF everyone contributes the PPG adds up ... THAT should be the napkin stat the TEAM should shoot for - beat the 18 ppg from Taylor every game out ... up to last night, the Warren team looked for Stadelman and Lupardus to be THE guys ... they can't be "the guys" if everyone is just playing D, and NOT contributing on the offensive end ... if they contribute it opens the door for Stadelman and Lupardus to do THEIR thing on the scoresheet ... outstanding D by everyone that stepped on the floor - I pointed out Wells on Wittekind but Lupardus/Anthony/Cressey/ Cochran all had a hand in the D on Wittekind with all of the switches in the man to man D ... great game to watch, I ended up watching it again when I got home on hudl just because it was good to see a complete TEAM effort by the Warriors ...

Sorry to have missed you last night Pfloyd, place looked and felt as if it was sold out. I was really impressed with the way Lupardus and Wells played against Bass and Wittekind and their ability to rebound.

Great breakdown Pfloyd.

Warriors handled the pressure fairly well, I really believe this Warren team has their best days ahead of them. What makes this team so hard to defend is that if you try to take Stadleman away you better be great in help side defense bc he will find the open man for an easy bucket.

I say that, bc just 1 guy cannot contain Stadleman.

Sealey, Berry and Lapartus will be huge down the stretch for this team.
Stadleman is arguably the best player to put on warrior uniform ever. But for this team to reach its goals those 3 guys will need to be more consistent on the offensive end.

I believe in Maddox and Co to have the guys ready to role in any situation their faced with.

Onto Fort.

Warren should finish 18-4, with two really tough games against Minford and Meigs. Advantage that the Warriors play both of them at the Coliseum. I've seen of them several times -- as of today, I'd rank them 1. Minford 2. Meigs 3. Warren. But each game is its own unique event, so a Warrior win especially over Meigs would not be shocking.

... the Minford game is on a neutral court at SSU this Saturday ... 6:30p tipoff ... IF Warren spreads the scoring around as they did last night - they are as good as or better than anyone in the SE District ...

Respectfully, I’m not sure getting 34 points (almost half) from one player is spreading it around. If both teams play to potential, I’d say Minford by about 10. Minford appears marginally better than Monroe Central, which beat the Warriors by 11. Minford has two maybe three players graded out higher than Julian with two of them high-quality college commits. It’s one game. 32 minutes. Lots can happen, but this is my take at this moment in time.

Not a typo. Marietta at one point was like 3/15 from the line

Yes, Marietta was 5/20 on FTs in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs when Warren beat them 43 to 15. Marietta Times had Warren with a 38 to 24 advantage in rebounds and a 28/47(60%) with 7 treys to 21/44(48%) with 5 treys advantage in FGs.

That’s crazy…cost them the Meigs game very late too. They better figure something out

Respectfully 2 or 3 players graded out higher than Stadelman. I guess it’s easier to make that determination after they played. Stadelman was the best player on the court tonight.

That's the way the rankings work. Marietta didn't play Saturday and Warren won against an undefeated team. There will continue to be separation between Warren and Marietta as the Tigers' schedule gets even tougher -- two of the top 6 teams in the entire South and Southeast all divisions and without starters available. Warriors have a shot at climbing all the way into the No. 1 seed if they can beat Meigs and Miami Trace loses one or two.
