Lucasville Valley 45
Portsmouth West 42 a final

... I made the 2 hour drive from the Hocking Hills to West Portsmouth last night to catch 2 of the young roster wise, up and coming teams in the SE District the Portsmouth West Senators entertaining the Lucasville Valley Indians ... the Westsiders start 2 sophs- 5-5 Braden Adkins/ 5-9 Owen Richards & 3 juniors ... 6-3 Will Kegley/ 6-4 Logan Wolfenbarker / 6-1 Cristian Quirasco ... while the Indians of Coach Craig Tackett countered with 3 sophs ... 6-2 Jaxsyn Bender/ 6-0 Blake Lundy/ 6-2 Braxten Conaway , 1 jr in 6-2 Christian Copen & the lone sr. for either team on the floor 5-10 Chase Davis ... young talent everywhere on the floor bodes well across the board for both SOC teams as both teams are not only young but they have high basketball IQ's to go with the talent levels each team brings to the floor ... on the other side of the "youth card" - you're not sure what you will get every time out on the floor, from game to game, quarter to quarter - youth ... Valley 45 West 42 a final

... both teams opened in zone defenses with the Valley 3-2 matchup zone seeming to bother the Westsider's - forcing them into a slower , half court pace of play in which they struggled to get to spots on the floor where they could be effective offensively - in the quarter only the junior duo of Will Kegly & Logan Wolfenbarker dented the napkin stat sheet with the 6-3 Kegley getting a strip steal and score at the rim 2pts and a drive through the paint for 2pts ... his talented running mate 6-4 Logan Wolfenbarker drained a three from the left corner (3pts) ... the Indians found holes in the Senator defense as one of the "veterans" on the Valley squad - jr. Chrisian Copen found teammates with no look dimes as 4 of the 5 starters put up numbers on the scoreboard ... Copen with an "and 1" in the paint (3pts), soph. Braxten Conaway a transition bucket & drive to the rim (4pts), Jaxsyn Bender paid off a Copen pass with 2pts and senior Chase Davis with a 2 pter at the rim ... Valley 11 West 7 after 1 ... more zone ... more defensive wins in the 2nd period, the Indians held the Senators to 2 fgs in the frame ... Will Kegley opened with a trey from the corner ... Valley answered with Copen finding soph. Blake Lundy on the blocks, backside of the WHS zone for back to back scores at the rim 15-10 Valley at 2:30 in the quarter ... Kegley cashed in on 2/2 from the FT line for West ... Copen continued to attack the West zone rotation finding Lundy again open to receive the Copen assist for 2pts (6 in the qtr, all on the receiving end of great Copen passes from the perimeter) ... West picked up only their 2nd fg in the qtr on a Cristian Quiasco trey from the right side ...Copen started and finished his own shot at the rim 2pts for VHS ... Chase Davis took a Copen interior assist for 2pts down low ... Valley thru 2 had shown the ability to decipher the West zone better than West in trying to solve the Valley 3-2 matchup zone ... Valley's offense & D kept West from the runout, transition buckets ... slowed the pace of play ... with the VHS ability thru 2 periods to find the open Indians in the paint - advantage Indians ... Valley 21 West 15 at the half ... pace of play - so important in the game of basketball, being able to play at a pace where your players feel comfortable, where you can take advantage of the individual skills of your players ... thru 2 quarters Valley took advantage of Copen's ability to take apart the West D with his passing from out to in ... this requires patience , passing on the perimeter to "move" the zone, open up the gaps, then seeing the gaps, dropping the dime & finishing - great job by Valley in the opening half ... West is built to run, get up and down, score in the transition game ... in the opening 2 period West had 1 transition bucket, 3/12 from behind the arc ... Valley 0-8 from 3 point land 9 fgs in the paint - patience, using the skills of your team ... West opened the 3rd quarter with the goal of turning up the defense, trapping the ball , forcing Valley to speed up their offense, which forced the movement of the ball more on the perimeter ... and with youth come turnovers .. if your the West Senators, turnovers = points off turnovers ... Valley had 5 turnovers in the 3rd, West converted a pair of transition buckets ... 6-4 jr. Logan Wolfenbarker dropped 9 pts showcasing all of his talent - hitting a deep three, a score off the dribble/drive to the rim, a transition finish for 2pts and a midrange jumper ... 9pts - scoring from all levels ... West got good minutes off the bench from 6-4 soph. Corbin Miller as he kept the pace up with a transition finish 2pts and 3 trey from the left wing (5pts in the qtr) ... at 2:39 on the clock West had pushed the pace, closed the gap and tied the game at 30-30 ... for Valley, Christian Copen continued to find teammates under the basket with assists, finding Lundy for 2 more dimes & scores 4pts ... Braxten Conaway dropped a three , Copen scored in the paint to keep the 30-30 game ... the last 2:39 of clock in the period was owned by the D's with West getting the last make of the period a Wolfenbarker midrange jumper 2pts ... West 32 Valley 30 after 3 ... youth - you never know what you are going to get with a young team until they are put in pressure situations ... Valley stepped up early in the final period going on a 7-2 run making the score 37-34 Indians with 5:58 on the clock ... by 4:12 the lead was 40-36 the visitors ... at 2:07 the Westsiders had evened the score at 42-42 ... a big boost for Valley was 6-2 soph Jaxsyn Bender who tied the game at 42 with his 2nd putback of the quarter with the first being an offensive board and 1 (7pts in the quarter/9 for the game) ... VHS soph Braxten Conaway hit a big time trey early in the qtr. along with an in the paint 2pter by Copen ... for West Quirasco 2 buckets in the paint 4pts, Kegley a drive and score at the rim 2pts/ Mason Parker finished in the paint for 2pts on a 5 foot floater ... 42 all ... turnovers were key down the stretch as West had 4 including an in the paint blocked shot with a change of possession in the waning seconds ... Lundy added the go ahead shot in the paint for Valley while "the" senior Chase Davis added 1/2 from the line to close out the game ... Valley 45 West 42 a final ...

... 2 youngster loaded teams in Valley and West that will continue to improve this season, while I look for both to be pushing toward top 15 rankings in the 2025-26 season Elite 8 rankings ...
