Meigs 54 a final
... Standing Room Only for the game between my #1 the Meigs Marauders & my #3 the Warren Warriors ... great atmosphere ... I usually sit in the cheap seats on the visitors side wherever I go, it eliminates trying to figure out if there are reserved seats and I learn a lot from watching the coaches, staffs & players throughout the game ... I got there early - 5:05 ish ... my seats in the cheap seats were taken by the Meigs faithful! - well played Marauder fans, well played - the seats at the top of the stairs that allow plenty of leg room, no seats in front of you where the dreaded "high back seats can be placed to crowd your legs" LOL ... I ended up on the Warren side - all good ... got to touch bases with the good people in Blue ... lots of friends in sports on the WHS side... was talking to a couple of folks with sons on the Warren JV squad (Warren won the JV game) ... I most often get asked - "Who are you scouting for?" ... I explain that I do game write-ups on SEOPs ... for some, that's enough to turn them away LOL ... others, they ask my thoughts on the game, who I think will win ... I try to be noncommittal in my answer - usually ... tonight I went out on a limb, gave them my take - I had seen Meigs in person vs Fairfield Union, Gallia, Marietta, & Athens - in every instance coming away from the games I felt Meigs struggles vs pressure ... on ball pressure where the ball is taken out of the PG's hands, where the bigs were forced to see the floor, make decisions with the ball ... Warren plays as good of pressure/physical D as you will see -advantage Warren ... Meigs has size - 6-8, 6-5, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 in the starting lineup with 6-5, 6-6 coming off the bench in the regular rotation ... they eat zones for breakfast inside and outside ... everyone of the first 6 in the rotation can put up double digit points and not bat an eye - man to man, pressure on the ball, physical D is the way to go for 32 minutes - where the bigs have to come out on the floor -away from basket/paint to get the ball, they have to put it on the floor to get to "their spots" - advantage Warren ... playing tight man to man , physical D - you will pick up fouls, it's the nature of the beast - Warren has an 8,9,10 man rotation - advantage Warren ... finally defensively you have to take away Meigs' perimeter looks - the spot up 3's - advantage Warren again as offensively Meigs has to move to get open, moving to get passes ... my take was IF these "keys" were checked off - Warren had the advantage defensively imo ... on the other side of the court - Meigs IS big! Warren had to score ... find shots ... matchups were not great based on height ... on paper it looked tough to be able to get shots in the paint , but Meigs plays a matchup, 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone'ish defense ... after watching the 4 Marauder games in person and others on video - it looked like penetration was the key either with the dribble or the pass - if you can get into the foul line area, you were going to get shots 1) on the perimeter on the wings 2) if you penetrate deeper drawing the 2 bigs to the ball, you had the dish on the blocks ... offensively - all you had to do was "make" the shots that the defense gave you LOL - easier said than done LOL ... Warren 70 Meigs 54 a final ...
... the opening quarter highlighted the defenses ... both turned the opponent over, Meigs with 3 miscues and Warren gifted the Marauders the ball 4 times ... Warren was getting used to the size disadvantage - Jacob Sealey for the Warriors picked up 2 quick fouls as the 5-10 sr. was guarding 6-5 , 6-4 in the paint ... Meigs was at the line for 3 FTs in the period - no points ... Brinager opened the MHS scoring with a drive to the rim 2pts, a Tracy Owens' strip and score 2pts gave the Marauders the lead before Warren could get on the board ... 6-3 sr. Chase Lupardus went up against 6-5, 6-8 in the paint for 2 fgs / 4pts at the rim ... Meigs took a 6-4 lead on 6-3 sr. Landen Dewees' shot at the rim 2pts & a miss on the "and 1" ... Warren answered with sr. Connor Barry dropping 2 three pointers from behind the arc ... Warren 10 Meigs 6 after one ... in the opening quarter, the Warriors number one option sr. Julian Stadelman was held scoreless, missing on a number of perimeter shots (Warren was 2/6 from 3 in the first) ... Meigs did a nice job of taking away driving lanes, and keeping the PG/SG off the napkin stat sheet ... the 2nd qtr opened with the tempo ratcheted up as Warren went into a 3/4 court pressing D, trapping in the half court ... Meigs turned the ball over 7 times in the period ... on ball pressure, getting the ball out of the pg's hands, making the bigs make decisions with the ball - Warren attacked the rim, got to the FT line BUT funny thing about going to the foul line - it's only a help IF you make the FTs ... Warren went 1/8 from the line in the 2nd period ... didn't capitalize on the Meigs miscues ... for Meigs with the Warren struggles at the line, and when they DID get the ball into the front court soph. PG Tracy Owens was able to put up 9 pts in the period/11 for the half ... after 6-4 sr. Cayden Gheen took a WHS turnover to the rim for 2pts ... 6-8 jr Carson Davis knocked down a midrange jumper ... Owens drained a trey 3pts/ followed up by a coast to coast transition bucket 2pts ... Dewees scored in the paint 2pts ... at 4:48 on the clock Meigs led 14-11 ... at 3:31 Meigs 16-13 ... for the Warriors Stadelman kept WHS close with a trey following another Lupardus basket on the blocks 2pts ... 6-5 sr Hayden Wells added a lefthand bucket on the left block 2pts ... Warren 21-16 with 2:17 left in the qtr. ... Meigs/Owens went on a 6-0 run to close out the half - AN Owens transition finish at the rim, AN Owens midrange jumper from the foul line extended, finishing with AN Owens one handed floater in the paint ... Meigs 22 Warren 21 after 2 quarters ... the Warriors trailed at the half but you never really felt like Meigs was in anyway controlling anything in the game - Warren turned Meigs over , Warren shot themselves in the foot as they got to the FT line but didn't convert, as they came away with empty trips vs Meigs getting scoring from Owens (9 pts in the 2nd) BUT again the main offensive threat for MHS - jr Carson Davis was held in check, not getting looks thanks to 6-5 Hayden Wells - pressure D all over the court , 6-8 Davis had 3 pts thru 2 qtrs, 6-5 Reed Brinager 2pts thru 2 qtrs, 6-5 sr. Dustin Vance 0 pts thru 2 qtrs, 6-6 Aaron Tobin 0 pts thru 2 qtrs ... Warren "Bigs" (Lupardus 6-3/6-5 Wells) 9pts vs Meigs' "BIGS" (6-8,6-5,6-5, 6-6) 4pts ... thru 2 qtrs Warren had 9 turnovers vs Meigs' 10 ... I wrote on my napkin stat sheet on the Warren side - "can't get open shots" ... on the Meigs' side - "lots of weapons" ... Warren wasn't getting looks while Meigs' bigs weren't getting points BUT with literally everyone on the floor able to score - Owens (11pts)/ Dewees (4pts)/Gheen (2pts) - Meigs was able to STILL be leading at intermission ... coming out of the locker room Warren was the aggressor both offensively and defensively - Stadelman worked to get HIS shot, an open 3 ball - count it ... Meigs put the ball into the paint - 6-5 Dustin Vance is as strong in the paint as anyone in the district - he's at home in the paint or driving baseline or down the lane - the sr post player muscled his way to the rim for a pair of shots at the rim 4pts ... Carson Davis found the range from deep with a trey 3pts ... for Warren, control meant turning loose the 6-3 Lupardus in the paint, the lefty put up 13 points in the paint - a dominant performance on the blocks, at the rim -muscling his way to the rim or via a Stadelman/Colin Anthony penetrate & dish dime ... once the Warriors were able to get inside it opened up looks on the perimeter as Connor Barry drained his 3rd three of the game ... when the dust settled Warren had a 23-14 advantage in the 3rd ... control of the game ... Warren 44 Meigs 36 after 3 ... the Marauders entered the game at 13-0 ... a 4 point win at Fairfield Union back in early December and a 1 point win over Marietta at Meigs have been the closest contests they have dealt with in this season ... down by 8 with 8 minutes to play , on the road - new territory for the Marauders ... Meigs put on a full court press that vs a veteran team like Warren was not effective as the Warriors took care of the ball - zero turnovers in the final 8 minutes - 9 fgs at the rim in the period for points ...8/12 from the charity stripe in the frame ... Stadelman took control of the ball & the game - putting up 13 points in the period /24 on the night ... Lupardus added 4 pts in the period all at the rim, Wells in addition to doing an outstanding defensive job on the Meigs leading scoring - Carson Davis - put up 5 pts in the qtr and nearly matched Davis' (9pts) with 8 on his own ball ... Colin Anthony at 5-10 ish, spent the biggest part of the 3rd and 4th quarters guarding 6-5 Reed Brinager down in the paint - the Warren PG did an outstanding job as Brinager finished with 10 points on the night- well below his season ppg ... Vance added 8 pts in the qtr for Meigs/12 on the game ... Warren kept the Marauders at arms length keeping the game a double digit game the entire 4th period at 5:36 Warren 52-38 ... 4:53 Warren 54-41 ... 2:15 Warren 64-48 with subs on the floor for both sides ... Warren 70 Meigs 54 a final ...
