Marietta 45 a final


... Marietta vs Warren ... both teams out of the Twin State League ... shared the TSL crown in the regular season ... each with a win on their home court during the season ... Washington County rivalry ... Friday night's game the rubber match game to see who would advance to the D3 semi-final to be played at Logan High School on Tuesday the 25th ... the first 2 times these two teams tangled the Tigers of Coach Gardner had an inside presence in 6-4 sr Junior Bass, due to transfer rules he was unable to play after 11 games into the season ... this was the new look Tigers, more play on the perimeter, lots of dribble drive, one on one iso plays to take advantage of favorable matchups ... Would Marietta be able to take advantage of matchups vs a defensive minded Warrior ball club? ... Warren 64 Marietta 45 a final ...

... Warren was unable to score until the 5:13 mark of the opening quarter ... nerves? seemed a little jittery as the Blue turned the ball over 4 times in the opening minutes of play ... Marietta showed its' hand early isolating 6-2 jr. Trey Hawkins on 5-10 sr. Jacob Sealey ... the game plan worked as the jr. scored the Tigers first 9 pts. - scoring low in the paint for 2pts on a post up ... a dribble drive and finish at the rim 2pts ... Hawkins stayed in the paint , taking the defender again to the paint, with his back to the basket elevated for a one handed 2pter just in front of the rim ... with the defense collapsing down to cut off the drive , the lean jr. stepped out beyond the 3 point line for a trey 3pts/9 in the qtr. ... Julian Stadelman finally took the lid off for the Warriors getting fouled in the paint 1/2 from the line ... 6-3 sr Chase Lupardus got free for a shot on the block 2pts ... Stadelman went coast to coast for 2pts ... at 1:20 to play in the period Marietta was up 14-7 ... 6-5 sr. Hayden Wells scored on the left block ... Stadelman followed with a drive and finish 2pts ... 6-0 sr. Nick Cressey scored on steal by Stadelman, feed to the block, finish at the rim 2pts as the buzzer sounded ... Marietta 14 Warren 13 after 1 ... nothing easy for Warren as the Tigers were taking away the perimeter shot, playing tight in the paint ...once the ball got into the paint - Warren with Lupardus COULD score - the problem was the perimeter D took away any looks to shoot or passing lanes to the inside ... Marietta's strategy of isolating down low with Hawkins vs Sealey - was working as the swing forward/guard was able to get the ball on the perimeter , Tigers cleared, Hawkins with the quicks to back the defender down and score ... if it worked in the 1st period - the Tigers were going to go to it until it was stopped in the 2nd ... 6-2 jr. Zaiden Wittekind drained a three from the top of the key to open the MHS scoring in the 2nd ... 6-4 jr Braiden Plaugher hit a trey from deep ... as the defense was stretched to take away the 3 ball, Hawkins used the same iso play, taking the defender into the paint scoring on back to back possessions 4pts ... Warren answered with Julian Stadelman getting to the line 2/2 ... hit a rare open look triple 3pts/5 in the qtr/12 in the half ... a rare find of Lupardus down low, the WHS center worked hard to get a righthanded finish - miss but fouled 2/2 from the FT line ... Connor Barry was left open on the outside , hitting a much needed trey ... Lupardus picked up an offensive board and stickback 2pts before again using his strength in the paint to get a shot off the board & in ... 2pts/ 6 in the qtr/8 in the half ... Warren 27 Marietta 26 at the half ... a monumental struggle for the Warriors the entire first two quarters to find open shots as the Tigers did a really nice job on the perimeter players ... forced 6 miscues from WHS while coughing up the ball 7 times at their end to help the Warriors get the lead going into the locker rooms ... rewind back to the last game played between these 2 clubs in the Warren Coliseum , Warren shut the Tigers down coming out of intermission - holding MHS to 2 fgs, 2 FTs - 6pts ... the Tigers were 2/9 from the FT line in that 3rd period while the Warriors were able to put up 19 pts opening a 20 point lead after 3 quarters ... fast forward to Friday nights' post season matchup ... Marietta's napkin stat line for the 3rd frame - 2 fgs in the final 1 and a half minutes of clock ... 1 for 6 from the charity stripe ... 5 pts in the quarter ... While the Tigers were reliving the 3rd quarter from their last loss in the Coliseum , Warren 1 upped their scoring from the 2nd meeting as the Warriors put up a 20 spot - Stadelman 7pts/ Lupardus 5pts/ Sealey and Barry each hitting big timely 3 pointers and Tyson Cochran adding 2/2 from the line ... Warren 47 Marietta 31 after 3 ... on the game Marietta was 2/15 from the Free Throw line Friday night ... in the loss at WHS during the regular season the Tigers were 13/30 ... in the critical 3rd quarter the 2/9 from the line allowed Warren to score & extend the lead ... same with tonight Marietta was 1/7 - empty possessions for Marietta - that allowed Warren to score & extend the lead ... in the previous game Marietta stayed off the foul line and was able to outscore Warren 27-25 in the final period ... Friday night Warren used the FT line to outscore Marietta 17-15 but again MHS was able to get within single digits ... Owen Riley knocked down a pair of 3 pointers , Seth Britton 2 drives to the rim 4pts ... Hawkins with 2 more buckets in the paint attacking the rim 4pts ... the Marietta achilles heel once again was empty trips to the FT line as Marietta went 1/9 from the line in the 4th ... it would appear that the best defense vs MHS was to play aggressive D, use your bench, put the Tigers on the line where they struggled to score - for Warren, it kept the ball out of the paint, kept MHS from scoring fgs - empty possessions that Warren was able to take advantage of at their end of the floor on offense as Warren only got 2 transition buckets one each by Wells and Lupardus ... the rest of the scoring was from the line ... Marietta fouled to stop the clock and put Warren at the foul line in the hope that the "poor FT shooting bug" was contagious , Warren was 13/18 from the stripe in the final period ... Warren with the rubber match W ... it wasn't pretty, in the survive and advance season it doesn't have to be ... the Warriors are heading to Logan to take on the undefeated, #1 seed in the D3 seeding , the 22-0 Miami Trace Panthers ... Warren 64 Marietta 45 a final ...

Warren a tough out. Marietta had a horrible schedule, for the most part. Upgrade, lose a couple extra games but get better. Maddox just owns most of the SE !

How in the world do you shoot 6/18 from 3 and only 2/15 at the FT line?

You’re not going to win big games while virtually wasting your time whenever you get fouled. Lots of key players back for Marietta and they should probably just live at the FT line 30 days from now until Summer fully starts.

15 for 45 in the 2 games at the Coliseum this year ... ouch ...

2/15 is a game changer. Tough to win against a squad like Warren with that percentage.

On the flip side.. Warren shoots 33 FT’s. YIKES!! They must have been living around the rack

Nobody practices many FTs. If you watch warmups, all you see is players jacking up 3’s.

... 18 of those were in the 4th quarter as MHS was fouling often - putting Warren on the line ...

Marietta’s schedule not horrible, despite that there are so many weak teams in the region. Tigers schedule included Monroe Central and Meigs like Warren, but also New Philadelphia, Steubenville, John Glenn, Akron Ellet. Warren added Minford and Fairland but didn’t play these other teams. Warren is a really good team, especially at home, and could make the final four. Not beating them had nothing to do with scheduling.

I got a text from the official scorer at the game last night ... and this is why my napkin stats are officially "UN-official" ... the first Wittekind 3 pointer - what I counted as a made three - was a 2 pointer ... unfortunate as Wittekind picked up technical foul for taunting or saying something after he perceived it to be a 3 in front of the Warren student section ... Marietta on the night had 2 technicals called on players - taunting after made three/deep two and an out of control reaction to a called foul ... both resulting in FTs - the first 2 FTs made and the ball ... the second resulted in Warren shooting 4 FTs making all 4 (2 technical FTs made, then 2 FTs for the foul committed) & getting the ball out ... so I took away one of the 3's from the Marietta total (now 5/17) and one from Wittekind going from 2 to 1 three pointer made ... I apologize for the wrong score & 3 ball numbers ...

No problem PFloyd. Nobody except the scorer’s table and coaches at the beginning of the 2nd half could know that.

... I just rewatched the game ... yeah, it sounded like the radio station had the same numbers I did through the end of the 2nd quarter ... they noticed the score difference from theirs to the scoreboards - they at the half checked with scorer on the discrepancy ... I didn't even notice - loud gymnasium - AS IT SHOULD BE & WAS - ... hard to hear the announcer or the buzzers etc. ... I was intent on getting "everything else" right while talking to people that were sitting around me ... was beside Connor Barry's parents/family along with Coach Duckworth's better-half ... all good people ... our good friend in basketball Mark Tate, father of Mark Tate II - outstanding player at Belpre with 1,151 points in his career ... Mark's nephew Michael Hall played for Coach Maddox at Warren & had an outstanding high school career and career playing at Marietta College ...Mark touched bases last night in the Cheap Seats with pfloyd ... great gentleman, outstanding youth coach in Washington County - great to see you Mark Tate as I told you last night my friend - "you, belong in the gym for peace of mind/ it's your Happy Place my friend" ...

As i watched it and the film Wittikinds 3 was a 3 not that it matters

Just a momento changer with a tech in a high emotional game that probably should have been over looked given the warren student section and what they was saying ti the pkayers and a grown man that was standing with them un uniform of a fire dept that started the altercation with wittikind

The Warren student section was rough, and no excuse for the fireman to be taunting a player like that, but still players just can’t give up points via technical in a close game.

Just wandering why he wasnt warned or throwed out wittikind isnt that type of player somethig was off there probably should of been warning on both

First, the 3-point shot was easily good -- why that was called a 2-pointer? Second, after watching it a few times, totally don't believe a tech was warranted. Maybe a warning. If you taunt an opponent or opposing coach, that's another thing. But Wittekind's reaction was fairly minor.

Schedule better than I thought, but they played some terrible teams. Get most of those off the schedule.
