Ironton 45 final
... Game 2 on the Play Card pitted 19-4 Zane Trace vs 15-7 Ironton ... just like people who get "reputations", teams based on past performances get "an MO" - Ironton during the regular season played a 1 loss Chesapeake team at IHS, the Tigers led 57-44 going into the 4th qtr. ... at 4 minutes and change, Ironton held a 16 point lead ... CHS pressure turned the Tigers over 9 times in the 4th , the Tigers gave up a 30 point qtr ... lost to CHS in OT by 7 points ... the MO of "have a hard time closing out the game, struggles under pressure" was out there ... Monday night, it was deja vu all over again ... the Tigers had slowly taken control of this one vs Zane Trace - close after 1 qtr a 2 pt Ironton lead ... +8 pt IHS advantage at intermission ...+6 advantage to the good for Ironton after 3 with the Ironmen taking a contested volleyball line 3 pointer as the buzzer sounded ... contact , no foul called ... it appeared that the no call was a difference maker as the Tigers came out in the 4th still thinking about the end of the 3rd - in the final frame - 9 Ironton turnovers under tremendous on ball pressure by Zane Trace ... the Pioneers outscored the Tigers in the final period 19-6 ... Zane Trace 52 Ironton 45 a final ...
... I wrote on my napkin stat sheet on the Ironton side in the pregame - "athletes at every position, 7 deep" , "fullcourt pressure" "quick" "strong" ...after the early "punch in the face" by ZT... Ironton forced 4 Pioneer turnovers , made it hard for ZT to find or get back into an offensive rhythm ... off the Tiger bench, jr Maddix Markel drained a corner trey 3pts, the next possession Markel got the ball in the paint, scoring at the rim 2pts ... 5-10 sr shooting guard Bryce Markins drained a deep three ball , Ashton Layne 6-3 soph, grabbed an offensive board & a stickback 2 pts ... Ironton 15 Zane Trace 13 after one ... quarter 2 was a tightly contested frame that had Ironton stretch their lead ... both teams settled in & took care of the ball each with 1 turnover (IHS's turnover a change of possession on a blocked shot by ZT) ... the Pioneers in the first 2:41 of the qtr. outscored the Tigers 4-2 ... Grady Stewart continued to be the ZT offense as the long, forward hit his 2nd trey of the game 3pts/11 pts in the half ... Ironton 29 Zane Trace 21 after 2 quarters ... the 3rd quarter ... the opening 3-4 minutes are usually key in a game - the trailing team has to figure out how to stop or at least slow down the opposition ... the leading team looks to handle the oppositions adjustments and add to the lead ... Coach Cassidy, kept the ZT players playing under control in the 3rd ... not forcing anything, still playing hard, handling the Tiger pressure (only 1 turnover in the quarter by ZT matching the miscues in the 2nd qtr) ... the teams traded buckets early in the period as the score stood at 28-37 Ironton with 3:58 in the 3rd ... 5-9 sr. 2 guard for ZT put up his first points of the game - a drive down the right side of the lane for 2pts , Grady Stewart with his 3rd triple of the night followed by another Rippeth drive and finish for the Pioneers ... for Ironton Ashton Layne drove the lane for 2pts, Markins hit treys #4 & 5 back to back for Ironton ... Ironton 39 Zane Trace 33 after 3 ... as Ironton got the ball out to start the 4th you could see "the look" on players faces for IHS - the no call looked to have bothered them as Zane Trace trailing, came out the aggressor ... attacking the ball full court ... on ball pressure ... it's nice to have a sr PG, Landon Jarrell due to injury had not played until the end of December/first week in January - the senior took over the 4th quarter for ZT, draining a 3 pointer to start the quarter - Ironton 39-36 with 6:28 to play ... ZT pressure forced 9 Ironton turnovers in the 4th ... a Jarrell 2 pointer from the left foul line extended 2pts ... 39-38 IHS ... a McCullough 1/2 from the line made it 39-39 with 4:31 on the clock ... a Schreck drive/fouled - miss/make ...
