...a district semifinal ... two teams that haven't "been there" in this position in awhile ... the winner punches their ticket to Basketball :30 at the Convo (sadly had this been LAST year BOTH of these teams would have been playing THIS game AT the Convo in Athens - but I digress) ... in the opening quarter of action BOTH teams played a little tight as they turned the rock over - Peebles 5 times vs Huntington's 4 ... Huntington got into the scoring column and onto the napkin stat sheets with 6-1 soph Frankie Hirsch finishing at the rim for 2pts, 6-2 sr. Gabe Beardsley added 2pts from in the paint ... sr. Carson Henneberger hit a midrange jumper 2pts/ Hirsch matched the Henneberger jumper with a 15 ft of his own - 2pts ...Peebles took the lid off the bucket with soph Josh McClary's 2/2 from the line ... 6-3 sr. Carson Reed used his length to score in the low post 2pts miss on the & 1 ... McClary stepped out behind the arc to hit a trey 3pts/5 in the frame ... 5-11 sr Hayden Browning drained a three pointer from beyond the arc 3pts ... 6-2 Grady Knechtly went coast to coast with a bucket & 1 (3pts) ... the Indians picked up their final points the qtr on Knechtly's make/make at the line ... after both teams settled down, the newness faded, some good basketball followed ... Peebles 16 Huntington 10 after 1 ... in the 2nd period Huntington continued to have trouble hanging onto the ball as the Huntsman added 5 more miscues to the bad /11 for the half ... scoring for HHS jr. Eli Ary got into the paint for 2, Kalvin Manson hit an 18 fter 2pts, the 6-2 jr. followed up with an offensive board & stickback 2pts ... Beardsley was fouled in the lane, make/make for the 6-2 senior ... Ary knocked down the Huntsmens' first trey of the game ... Manson scored on a transition bucket ... Huntington with a solid quarter offensively putting up 16 pts... while the scoring for HHS in the 2nd was from 3 players, Peebles spread the wealth as 5 Indians put up points in the qtr. 6-0 jr Paxton Ryan hit a three ball from downtown ... Knechtly with back to back offensive boards and finishes for 4pt ... 6-3 Carson Reed was fouled in the act of shooting make/make ... the PHS defense took over as the Indians forced the 5 HHS turnovers each resulting in transition points for the Peebles - Reed for 2pts/Bo Johnson a pair of transition finishes 4pts, Mcclary 2pts, Ryan 2pts ... Peebles 35 Huntington 26 after 2 quarters ... coming out of intermission Peebles struggled as Huntington turned up the defensive pressure forcing 5 PHS turnovers - none of which resulted in points for the Huntsmen but the defensive pressure kept Peebles off the board as they were held to 7 pts in the 3rd frame .. only 2 Indians scored - Knechtly with 4 pts & Reed adding 3 on 2pts in the paint and 1/2 from the line ... Huntington faired a little better in the quarter but not by much as the HHS tallied 8 pts - Hirsch with 4/ Manson & Braydon Elliot with 2 pts each ... Peebles 42 Huntington 34 after 3 ... Coach Arey's Indians just played solid basketball in the 4th, taking care to not allow any big runs by the Huntsmen - although HHS DID hit for 4 treys on 10 attempts in the quarter - Ary/Manson/Elliot/Beardsley each with a triple in the period ... Hirsch added a pair of shots in the paint before the long range bombing opened up ... Peebles countered by not getting rattled as the 3's were thrown up by HHS instead showing good discipline in not turning the game into a race ... the Indians got into the paint for makes by Reed/Johnson/McClary before closing out the game on the free throw line hitting 9/12 to send them to the Convo to take on North Adams in a district championship game on Sunday March 2nd @ 2p ... Peebles 59 Huntington 50 a final ...
