Notre Dame 52 Manchester 30 District D7 Final ...

Post by pfloyd »

Notre Dame 52
Manchester 30 a final

... Congratulations to Coach Kingsolver and his Greyhounds from Manchester on earning their way into the District finale, making it to Basketball :30 , getting the opportunity to play in the Convo ... great moment for the Greyhounds that will be a memory for a lifetime from winning the District Semi vs Southern, to the parade/escort out of town to send the team off to the Mecca of High School basketball in Southern/Southeast Ohio - the Roundhouse on Richland, the Convocation Center on the OU Campus in Athens ...it had been 12 seasons since Manchester had last made the trip East on Rte. 32 to hear Lou Horvath tell you what time it is - Basketball :30... well done Coach Kingsolver and the Greyhounds ... Notre Dame 52 Manchester 30 a final ...

... every year it is brought up "it takes time to get used to the Convo court surroundings" - big court, no fans at floor level, the double three point lines, the shooting background ... whatever gremlins there are Manchester was caught up by them as the Greyhounds never adjusted until it was too late in the game the 4th and final quarter ...

... the Titans of Portsmouth Notre Dame HAD been in the Convo in recent times, as 4 of the 5 starters are seniors , were familiar with the surroundings ... ND got 4 players in the scoring column early - Landon Barbarits taking the lid off with a floater in the paint for 2 pts ... 5-10 jr. Zion Boerger with a score in transition 2pts , Mr. Consistent- sr. PG Myles Phillips knocked down a deep three pointer then followed up a MHS miscue with a transition bucket 5pts in the period ... 6-1 soph Garrett Barbarits entered off the bench to hit ND's 2nd trey of the opening quarter 3pts ... the Greyhounds were struggling to find the bottom of the basket as the team went 2 for 14 from the floor, 1 for 8 from behind the three point line(s) - a trey by 5-10 jr. Parker Hayslip 3pts ... the only other bucket for MHS was an offensive board/stickback for 2pts by 6-2 jr. Braylon Rickett ... Notre Dame 12 Manchester 5 after 1 ... it's hard to "focus" that first time at the Convo - when you talk to players, listen to them describe the feelings they have running out of the "tunnel" onto the Convo floor for the first time ... for most it's a memory for a lifetime ... unfortunately the game day routines are replaced by emotions of the moment - oft times hard to refocus to the task at hand ... Manchester's only points in the 2nd period was a putback basket by 5-9 sr Ronnie Elam 2pts ... the napkin stat line for the team read : 1/9 (11.1%) from the floor ... 0/2 from 3 point land ... 0-0 from the line ... 5 turnovers ... Notre Dame knows the need to focus ... defense wins 'ships - ND forced 5 turnovers in the 2nd ... from D comes offense ... 6-0 Brady Davis scored on a drive & finish 2pts ...the Titans with the solid D controlled the boards at both ends of the floor as Bradford pulled down 4 in the half, Phillips 5, Davis 3 and Boerger 2 ... Landon Barbarits followed a Kenady McGraw trey 3pts with one of his own - 3pts ... Aaryn Bradford went strong to the rim - fouled - make/make ... the ND scoring closed with a Landon Barbarits putback bucket 2pts and Myles Phillips 15 footer for 2pts ... Notre Dame 26 Manchester 7 at the half ... Notre Dame controlled the game - if your opponent "ain't" putting up points (3/23...13% from the floor) - the half time speech had to be "keep doing what we're doing on offense" ... "they will have to start hitting at some point... stay focused ... play D ... let's not letup " ... Notre Dame scored 12 in the first, 14 in the 2nd ... when the buzzer sounded to end the third ND had played consistently on the offensive end putting up another 12 spot - Boerger with 4 pts/ Bradford 4/ Davis & Philips each with 2 ... defensively kept up the pressure forcing 8 more MHS turnovers limiting the number of "shots on goal" as the Greyhounds got off but 7 shots, making 2 fgs - jrs. Elijah Crabtree & Malaki Bayless each hitting a midrange jumper 2pts each ... Notre Dame 38 Manchester 11 after 3 ... 8 minutes until the Sweet 16 ... the Titan fans were getting the cameras ready ... sometimes when everything around you isn't going as planned ... only 8 minutes left in the game , a game where figuratively & literally nothing has gone right on the court ... a silent "what the heck" is the best route - Manchester played their best quarter of the night - going 6/15 from the floor (40%) ... 5/12 from behind the arc (41.7%) ... only 1 turnover vs forcing 3 by the Titans ... Braylon Roberts with a putback 2pts and a three pointer 5pts set the tone offensively for MHS ... sr. Leland Horner drained a deep 3 in the last game of his high school career ... sr. Malaki Bayless fouled ... 2/2 from the line to close out his Greyhound career ... 5-9 sr. shooting guard Ronnie Elam connected on back to back NBA threes before being pulled for the next wave of young Greyhounds ... a 19 point offensive quarter by the seniors for MHS to leave the hallowed Convo Court ... the Titans did what they needed , stayed focused, put up a 14 pt quarter to close out the game , move on to the Sweet 16 with a D7 District 'ship in hand ... Zion Boerger led the scoring with 6 pts in the qtr, Kenady McGraw with 4 pts ... Myles Phillips with 2 pts on a transition bucket... 5-10 freshman Keagan Fowler closed out the game with a 15 foot jumper ... Notre Dame 52 Manchester 30 a final ...
