Basketball Stats?

As I read the newspaper articles from the various games, I see that the points scored are usually what's mentioned. The players who do a great deal of the work such as the assists, steals, hustling on defense and leadership of the younger players seems to go unnoticed. Coaches please don't forget if it wasn't for them some of the high scoring players would not have those points. I'm not taking away from those who can score, but it takes a team effort.

Bailey worked hard on defense, was a great teammate, got the coach water when he was thirsty, helped an opponent back up to her feet, handed the ball back to the official after a travelling call, gave her teammate a high five, told the coach thank you, attempted to take a charge, attempted to draw a foul, attempted to make two free throws, cleaned up a spill, and helped an old lady cross the street.

Thanks Super Trooper. Your right on how do you put a hustle play in the newspaper. I was just trying to make a point that there are players who significantly contribute to the game other than making all the baskets such as the playmakers, assisters, stealers and rebounders. According to the MeigsCountyGuy's sarcasm, I apologize for offending you. I'm assuming your player makes all the points on the team. Good luck to all the teams and all the players.

I was just kidding. Everyone knows that it takes at least 5 players, all doing a particular job, to make a team. It does take hustle, leadership, and a great attitude to make a ball player. Points are most certainly a by-product of many other factors. I was simply making a joke that it is difficult to translate those attributes to a newspaper headline.

The stats don't always tell a good story either. I've seen plenty of articles stating Janice had a team high 19 point while Ethel contributed 8. The truth is Janice shot 30% or 64 times and Ethel shot 75% or 11 times. The team lost by ten. Watching the game you cant figure out why Ethel didn't get more touches and why Janice couldn't get the ball to Ethel, but reading the paper you get the impression Janice had a great game and Ethel did alright. Don't put to much faith in the stats reported by the paper as, without all the stats, the stats can be very misleading. I also agree that there are those work horses that make everything possible yet never see the glory. My hats off to them and to the coaches that are able to bring awareness of their efforts out in any of the news articles. This appreciation is also extended to those who work tirelessly in practice to ready the starters for the next game.

The paper doesnt usually put a lot into the paper if u see how small most commentaries are, well at least in the Daily Times. Also most parents/fans think the more you score the better player you are. But to people who know/scout teams the player who does everything else and can score effieciently are the true players. Like Dickie V says "stat stuffers" are the players

How are SOC first team and second teams picked? Are they based on who has scored the most points or do the coaches recognize those overall players who contribute not only points but steals, deflections and assists? I previously watched a game where a player created a majority of the assists to those who scored and numerous steals and deflections and was one of the only dribblers to create scoring opportunities. This player did not score a great deal in this game but rather created scoring opportunities for the other players because she is a team player. As I set there I listened to others compliment the player who scored but not the player who did all the work to get it there. I feel that people forget it takes a team to win. I hope your right that those who truly know the game recognze who the play makers are as well as the shooters. I'm not taking away from those who can shoot(this player usually scores in games), because there are some great shooters in the league, especially from West, Minford, Valley and Wheelersburg.

START TIME you bring up a good point on game creators ones who make things happen. From the games I have seen about 70% of the shooting is either driving it to
the basket or putting back up shots after a missed shot. As for outside shooting I have seen very little. Maybe we need a list of game makers the ones who help the
stat makers get their stats.

That is a great idea, since the newspapers simple stats do not give these girls the praise that they deserve for doing the dirty work. A list of those players you are thinking about would be a great tribute to those young ladies by people who understand the logistics of the girls game because you are watching them assist, rebound, screen, play defense, and hustle. Make it an All John Madden team.

You guys are failing to realize that the news paper also has a deadline in which to write their story, and do to have the man power to cover every game in the county. Especially those of you who want to criticize the Times for a lack of coverage, you need to count the number of games a night and then how many staff members they have. Wouldn't take a 6th grade scholar to understand many coaches are counted on to send in the information.

There is a difference between "good" defense and aggressive defense.

Yea Pol Pot your right a good defensive player is okay but an agressive player is one who puts alot of pressure on the offense, distrupts plays and creates turnovers that is a player I would like to have.

Not sure fouling out is good defense. Cannot help your team sitting on the bench and fouls equal points and free throws for the other team.
