Regional final rematch - Waterford vs Hiland
It’s a rematch from last year.
Waterford is playing well. Hiland is too.
I would say Waterford's size will impact Hiland.
Hiland is a very disciplined team and they can shoot lights out from beyond the arc.
Waterford has played some pretty tough defense these past few games. Forcing turnovers and playing their full and half court very well. Very Waterford-like
Hiland is just Hiland. It will be another great game Saturday.
Two very well coached and talented teams.
Best of luck to both teams.

Waterford has really tightened the screws mid-late season. What they did on the road to a very good Marietta team was impressive. Very good defensive ball club. They move the ball well. Don't take bad shots. Very well coached team, they know when to slow the pace and bleed teams out. Hiland is always a tall order but the Waterford program has done a nice job in becoming one of the premiere teams in the smaller school divisions.
I'll take the Wildcats by 5

Kendall Sury has been the difference in this one. 15 points.

Ugly basketball but defense has made it so for the most part.
Waterford passes better in this one, so far, and they are a lot quicker.

Feel bad for the players with the refs being so inconsistent.

Officiating didn’t make a 16 point difference. Waterford defense and poor shooting doomed Hiland.LICKING COUNTY FAN wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 8:09 pm Feel bad for the players with the refs being so inconsistent.
Hiland radio was calling for an Oscar on an Wagner for drawing a blatant offensive foul. Officiating is generally low hanging fruit, especially in a blowout.
Congratulations to Waterford on another Regional
championship.

I said inconsistent. Let me clarify since some seem to jump to a conclusion, I meant one way or the other. It was INCONSISTENT BOTH WAYS.Sweater poorly knit wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 8:25 pmOfficiating didn’t make a 16 point difference. Officiating was fine. No reason to even suggest it was a factor.
Waterford defense won the game. Hiland was 7-31 at one point with 0 made 3s. Suri nearly outscored Hiland by herself.

Re: Regional final rematch - Waterford vs Hiland
Takeaways from the game
1. Waterford and Hiland are at the top because of their preparation. Hiland knew what they were getting as well as Waterford having an idea after they faced last year in the regional final. But Hiland focused on Wagner and forgot about the other 4 players for Waterford who can play.
Smithberger- creates. On both ends of the floor. I would put her up against anyone in this state. She is good. Not a point scorer but just plays the entire facet of the game well
Pottmeyer- for a freshman- she’s the real deal. Probably one of the best freshman I have seen play this year. Her defense is stellar. Speed. Agility. Ball handling. Wow
Malec- kind of the quiet horse of the game. In the right spot at the right time. She had 6 rebounds tonight standing at about 5’2”. Fast. Has speed on another level. Can change direction on a dime.
Sury had a lot of points. But she had a great support staff around her. Wagner and Smithberger were both very good at getting her the ball, sealing off the lane or baseline and creating chances that were beneficial.
Hurley came off the bench and gave some solid minutes. She played her role and had great looks and gave her teammates breathers.
2. The physicality of the game. Officiating was just not the best. Very lopsided fouls each quarter. They couldn’t decide how or what to call. But I will say - this game may have been the most physical game I have seen in the tournament.
3. Defense. Waterford didn’t play their full court which may have helped them create a disarray for Hiland. Hiland did press full court but Waterford responded well. Waterford’s communication on the court was really good. Wagner was extremely vocal and along with Sury and Smithberger really did a great job on both ends of the court with calling out screens and switched well across the board
4. Size. Waterford was long and fast. Hiland had speed but could not defend the length. And Hiland was cold. Waterford had a hand in the face of the hilands shooters outside.
Not sure who Waterford faces in the final four but I’m sure whoever it is will have their work cut out for them. Waterford is firing on all cylinders.

officiating was ok. lead official was pretty good and made the majority of the calls. as for the other two officials one was average and the other was let’s just say not good. waterford was the better team and would have won with farmer yoder officiating.Sweater poorly knit wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 8:49 pm Officiating was fine.
