Girls D5 State Tournament Semifinal! @ the Convocation Center on the OU Campus in Athens!! it was Lights Out at the Convo!!! ... the Portsmouth Lady Trojans TURNED the lights out on the Fairland Lady Dragons EARLY in this one ! Wow ... I spend all of my time on the boys side of high school basketball, with the game today being played at the Convo prior to the D7 Boys Regional Final it just made sense to take in this State Semifinal matchup ... I know, I know I'm outta my league but this Portsmouth Lady Trojan TEAM is special !!! sitting courtside today, keeping the napkin stats of the game, I had the opportunity to see "next level" lady basketball players in action - 5-7 sr. Daysha Reid already committed to Georgetown University in KY ... jr. KK Mays - outstanding ball handler, defender ... 6-0 jr Sienna Allen can do it all .. scores from all levels, is as smooth with the ball as I have seen boys or girls ... handles/ floor vision, shooting ability - the best player on the floor - shows why she has gotten 20 offers already in her young career - Sienna Allen/ Daysha Reid are pure shooters of the ball, the threes they shot today were unforced shots that were 3 ft beyond the college three point line ... outstanding group of young ladies - TEAM ... defense at any level boys or girls wins 'ships - the Trojans play it , the Trojans completely took away the Fairland offense - no shots to be had, no looks ! the Fairland TEAM "ain't" a slouch ... 21-5 with 2 of those losses to this same PHS team during OCC league play ... the Lady Dragons had their own quality wins throughout the season ... being held to 40 points offensively - says a lot about the Trojan D ... Fairland was held to 23.1% shooting the 1st quarter, 25% in the 2nd, 25% in the 3rd , & 40% in the 4th ... held to 13 fgs for the game ... the PHS pressure D turned the Lady Dragons over 17 times in the game ... dominance at both ends by the Trojans ... it will take a REALLY good team to beat this PHS group ... ... Fairland never led in the game ... sr. Daysha Reid opened the scoring for PHS with a logo three - count it ... 6-0 jr Sienna Allen got the ball inside - fouled - make/make 2pts ... Reid followed with her second beyond the college 3 point line trey ... 5-6 soph KeKe Woods with the strip/steal & score 2pts ... when the scoring barrage ended the Trojan ladies had put up 10 shots on goal connecting on 7 of them ... of the 7 fgs made 4 were threes where PHS was perfect from the field 4/4 in the first ... Reid 9 pts/3 triples in the qtr , Sienna Allen 7pts with a 3 ball included, KeKe Woods/Hayven Carter & KK Mays each pitched in 2pts apiece as the Trojans rolled up 22 pts in the period ... Fairland found trying to get looks at the basket almost impossible as the Trojan D held them to 3/13 from the floor ... 5-10 jr Isa Taliaferro with a three pointer, Bailey Russell a three and 6-0 jr Addyson Pemberton with an offensive board and putback bucket 2pts ...Portsmouth 22 Fairland 8 after 1 ... the PHS D with the win in the opening frame , the Lady Trojans turned the Dragons over 5 times in the first, took away the lanes to the bucket, forced the contested perimeter shot ... if the defensive plan worked in the 1st , it worked even better in the 2nd for the Trojan ladies - forcing 4 more miscues by the Dragons, didn't allow FHS 10 fg attempts in the qtr. holding Fairland to 2/8 shooting from the field - 1 fg in the paint made for the first 2 quarters of play ... defense ... with the PHS speed in transition, many of the PHS shots were taken before the Fairland D was able to set up - shots from all levels ... Sienna Allen hit for the "level cycle" as she scored in the paint off the block, drained her 2nd trey of the game and pulled up for the 15 foot midrange jumper - 7 pts/14 for the half ... Reid with 1/2 from the FT line to go with a coast to coast finish at the rim 2pts/12 pts in the half ...soph KeKe Woods might be the quickest basketball player with the ball - boy or girl - that I have seen all year ... the speedster scored on a blow-by transition bucket 2pts and hit a pull-up 12 footer ... Hayven Carter with a board/putback bucket 2pts to go with a dribble drive and finish at the rim 2pts ... the only offense from the Lady Dragons was a 3 pointer from Ava Layne and 3/4 from the line by Addyson Cornell to go with a bucket in the paint 4pts ... PHS with a plus 11 advantage on the scoreboard in the quarter ... Portsmouth 40 Fairland 15 after 2 ... the Trojan Ladies can score the ball at all levels, score out of their defense in transition ... what I enjoyed seeing was the defense - taking away literally everything that Fairland wanted to do with the ball - get it into the lane via the pass or penetration ... the perimeter defense took away the 3 point shot - no looks from deep ... the Portsmouth D held Fairland to 23% shooting from the field in the first 2 quarters while shooting 62.5% at their own end of the floor ... I did some half time math ... Portsmouth was 15/24 from the field overall 62.5%, from 3 point land 5/8 for 62.5% ... 2 point fgs 10/16 ... you guessed it - 62.5% from the floor from inside the arc ... consistency ... coming out of the locker room Fairland got a 3 pointer from Addison Godby from the left wing 3pts , Godby to the rim , miss but fouled - make/make , Ava Layne dribble drive to the rim & finish 2pts & 1 make - 3pts ... Layne with a drive and score 2pts/5 in the qtr. ... jr Addyson Cornell finished the 12 point Fairland offensive qtr with a bucket in the lane 2pts ... not nearly enough to get back in the game vs a well oiled offensive machine like the Lady Trojans ... PHS put up another 18 spot on the board in the quarter as Daysha Reid showed why she's a 1000 point scorer, the sr guard got in the lane twice for 4pts, hit the midrange jumper 2pts before going coast to coast for 2 pts /8pts in the qtr/20 for the game thru 3 periods ... Sienna Allen did Sienna Allen things - drove the length of the court for 2pts at the rim the & 1 - miss ... took a pass from KeKe Woods in transition to score on a floater across the lane ... she finished off her scoring on the night with 2/2 from the line ... 6pts in the frame/20 on the game ... Woods & Carter each with 2 pts in the 3rd period ... Portsmouth pushed making this one a running clock as they finished the quarter up by 31 going into the 4th and final period ... Portsmouth 58 Fairland 27 after 3 ... the PHS faithful were already celebrating the W as the Trojan Ladies on the floor worked to take the air out of the ball - PHS' Keke Woods with a transition bucket for 2 points to go with Bry Shannon's 2/2 from the line and Salem Allen's make/miss at the line ... Fairland got points in the 4th from beyond the arc as Bailey Russell/Kamryn Barnitz & Sierra Pemberton each hit a trey in the quarter to go with Addyson Cornell's putback bucket 2pts ... the majority of quarter was the Trojans running time off the clock - not even looking to shoot as the offense stayed between the top of the key and half court ... Portsmouth 63 Fairland 40 a final ...
