PROCTORVILLE — The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers were like an automobile engine on a cold morning. It was tough to start but, once it got running, it clicked on all cylinders.

Ironton started slow Monday against Fairland, but kicked into gear in the second quarter en route to a 53-25 win over the Lady Dragons.

“We came out a little sluggish to start the game. It took most of the first quarter to get going. Once we did, we picked up the intensity and started to play some defense and hit our shots,” said Ironton coach Doug Graham.

Ironton (3-1) was only 3 of 11 from the field the first quarter and led just 9-4.

Fairland (2-2) got a layup from Destinee Spears with 6:18 on the clock in the second quarter to make it 9-6.

That’s when Ironton’s engine began to purr as everyone started to score.

Jessica Waddle hit a 12-footer, Michelle Pancake converted a 3-point play, Mercedes Crockrel sank a free throw, Waddle hit from the baseline and Alex Taylor and Lorna Ceasar both scored inside.

Crockrel made two more layups and Taylor had another with 25 seconds left as Ironton went on an 18-0 run to lead 27-6 at the half.

The streak continued into the second half as the Lady Fighting Tigers ran off 12 unanswered points to start the third quarter to make it 39-6.

The Lady Dragons ended nearly an 11-minute draught on a putback basket by Lauren Fulks with 3:25 left in the quarter.

The lead was 45-10 to start the fourth quarter when Shelby Fuller scored for Fairland.

But Brea Tackett countered with a 3-pointer for Ironton, Taylor had two foul shots, Pancake followed up her own shot and made a free throw and Ironton had its biggest lead of the night at 53-12 with 4:50 left.

MacKenzie Rucker nailed a 3-pointer for Fairland to halt the run but the damage was done.

Crockrel led Ironton with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Waddle had 16 points, four assists and four steals.

Rucker led Fairland with 8 points.

Ironton hosts SEOAL favorite Logan on Wednesday. Fairland visits South Point in an OVC game.
