SHL Girls Basketball
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
This could have been one of the best girls teams Peebles has ever seen, excluding the Reed Era. Shame it hasn't turned out that way.
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
Congratulations to the NA Lady Devils on another Mcdonalds tournament title. This is at least their 5th in a row.
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
Congrats coach Davis and the Lady Devils especially the seniors. This group has been very successful in the Holiday tournament.
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
agreed. I'd like to see a little more pressing and man-to-man.Debo wrote:This could have been one of the best girls teams Peebles has ever seen, excluding the Reed Era. Shame it hasn't turned out that way.
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
From what I've seen/heard, if the parents would be parents and let the players play and the coaches coach things might turn around. When it becomes only about my daughter and how many points she can score or if she can be the superstar and that comes before team thats a big problem.
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
Phshero, what do you mean by the talent not being used correctly?Looks to me like the talent isnt playing up to there ability.Losing players hasnt helped, but i dont see these girls playing like there capable of playing. This group has played how many games over the last 5 or 6 years.
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
I think coaches have to know their players well enough to get the most from them on the floor. If these girls have played as much as u say, and were always a winning team, then what is the problem?

Re: SHL Girls Basketball
All 5 of the Peebles varsity girls have played at least 5 or 6 years of AAU basketball, each on their own respective teams! Every one of them have played at a much higher level than high school basketball! These girls have won numerous tournaments, ALL of them have won state championships and played in the National Championships almost every year and have almost always finished within the top 5! None of them have ever played anything on these respective teams except for man-to-man defense, yet they come back to "high school" ball and these coaches have them play nothing but a stupid little "jr. high" zone!!! This is just one example that I have witnessed of how these coaches are not "playing the talent correctly!"
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
Maybe switching to man to man and getting out of a zone. Making the players respect the coach is a big factor. Obviously these girls have no respect for their coach. I'm not saying this is all the coaches fault....well ?

I'm not really sure that AAU is considered a "much higher level" of basketball and I"m not so sure that it hasn't contributed to the ruination of high school sports to some degree. Anyone can play AAU if you have the money so it's not like its an elite group that you have to go out for. My daughter has also played several years of AAU and personally I see that it teaches a lot of bad habits. The other thing you have to remember as that on some of these better AAU teams you are dealing with a whole group of good players from various schools. HS basketball doesn't have the luxary of having a whole team of the best players from several schools

Re: SHL Girls Basketball
I must certainly would have to disagree with you! There are several teams that call themselves an AAU team but these ARE NOT the teams who win state championships and/or go to Nationals to compete and these ones may very well be teaching bad habits!! The teams that the varsity girls play on however, most certainly do always play at a "much higher level" than high school basketball!!shlalum wrote:I'm not really sure that AAU is considered a "much higher level" of basketball and I"m not so sure that it hasn't contributed to the ruination of high school sports to some degree. Re: SHL Girls Basketball
While the girls are still together, maybe we should get a coach with a little more knowledge and respect next year ?
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
and as far as respect, that starts at home. I guess I was old school but I was taught by my parents to respect teachers, coaches, etc...no matter whether I liked them or not. And I loved the game so I played hard at all times, I didn't make excuses, I wasn't allowed to make excuses. If a girl hears from her parents day in and day out how her HS coach doesn't know anything and certainly not as much as the AAU coach then that goes a long way in allowing her to disrespect.
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
comparing AAU and HS basketball is like comparing apples to oranges. You cant compare the two. If kids have the work ethic, the heart, and the desire, everything else will fall into place.

Re: SHL Girls Basketball
You most certainly can compare the two! When you have 5 girls this talented and successful on the AAU circuit, when you bring them back home and put them all together if you are "using your talent correctly" you should have much success! Believe me these kids have "the work ethic, the heart AND the desire," there still here aren't they???
Re: SHL Girls Basketball
I understand that when you are a parent of a player on a team your viewpoint will be a little different. I haven't been to all of the girls games but from what I've seen and heard its time to let the players play and the coaches coach. I'm not sure that any one of us agrees with every single thing a coach does but as parents our jobs are to teach our kids to respect a coach and play hard ALL the time. Then as parents we have to back those words up with actions, not just continual bad mouthing of everything we don't agree with. As parents we have to be supportive of the whole team and the program and not just when our daughter is the leading scorer. We also need to teach our kids that team comes before individual stats and records. Just unbiased opinions.

Re: SHL Girls Basketball
Peebles has an unfortunate history of letting the parents run things and until that stops things won't get better.
