Waterford was up 32-20 at the half and won 69-28. Two Monroe Central players who started against Federal Hocking did not play in this game. Waterford looked sluggish at the beginning but looked much better as the game went along.

Lancers go into the Alley and take out Alexander. tougher game than some expected but Alex has improved and will fight for the Ohio crown. That being said, I don't think the Lancers are quite ready for Waterford and Thursday's game could be a big hurdle. I still go back to having a better chance to win the second game at Waterford to have a shot at sharing the crown.

Don't want to overlook Belpre's win last night over Nelsonville York. From what I understand from NY, the Bills girl was a beast with 25 pts and 15 rebounds. The Hocking looks to be getting the better of the Ohio in the head to head matchups so far.

The middle to top of the Hocking is flat better than the middle to top of the Ohio division. Southern beat Wellston mercilessly a few weeks back.

Dang skippy we did. This here is our year:

TVC Title
Sectual Champs
District Champs
Regional Champs
State Runners Up just like in 1980 and 1982

1980-82.....the glory days of Southern basketball. We almost did it!

I like the Wildcats to open the TVC with a win tonight at Fed Hock. I think their defense, legnth and experience are the biggest factors tonight. I think Waterford can handle the FH press and even use it to create some easy baskets. FH will play 10 girls and will them stay fresh but I don't think splitting Walker/Cotrill/Osborne/Burdette for long stretches throughout the game helps in the long run. Any time that Cotrill spends on the bench and not on the court wreaking havoc (on both ends of the court) thats a plus for Waterford. Look for the Wildcats to take advantage of the second unit.

Matchups for Waterford
Sury on Cotrill
Malec on Walker
Pottmeyer on #2

Here is the link for the game tonight.

Spiderjon - I thought you predicted Federal Hocking winning this game. What changed your mind?

I think FH could still pull this game out, same as I stated before: control the tempo and get hot from deep.

But after watching the Lancers against Alexander and Monroe Central I think the advantage goes to the Cats. Defense, experience, and i think the Wildcats expose the second unit on defense.

FH got the faster pace they wanted, but once they fell behind in the 3rd, they couldn’t get back over the hump

Good win for the Wildcats, whose demise may have been overstated.

Waterford shot poorly from the three point line hitting only one 3, and was somewhere around 50% from the FT line. Waterford's length was a problem for FH, and Wagner had at least 15 rebounds and 5 blocks. FH is very deep and has several girls who aren't afraid to shoot it and probably had at least 7 or 8 threes in the game.
Up next for Waterford is a tough Unioto team that already has 4 blowout wins with only 1 loss to Purcell Marion who has one of the better teams in the state.

Lancers are still getting used to the new up tempo style but I was encouraged last night. Once again struggled coming out of the half with our shooting and got down 12 but battled back a few different times. Wagner was a tough matchup and FH couldn't execute against her but these kids will learn for the second meeting. Some may argue that the Cats mistakes kept the Lancers in the game but the Lancers forced a lot of those mistakes. Hats off to Waterford for the win. I heard that some parents and players think that Hilverding will be back. Not sure if there is a movement there or just wishful thinking. But I think their preparation and game management was not as good last night without him. Not sure how far they go without him but Close has been doing it a long time and to now lose that second person that you've worked with for so long will take time.

No doubt that FH had a hand in Waterford's shooting woes, except at the free-throw line. FH's up-tempo style had Waterford winded a bit in 2H so Waterford had to call a couple of "strategic" timeouts.
Hopefully Hilverding continues to help with "back office" support for the Team. He is a great coach and does all of the little things to help Coach Close with preparation.
Next match up should be a good one also.

Agreed on all points. Normally I might say the frantic pace took something out of Waterford's legs to affect the FT shooting but they were missing them in the first quarter so that blows that theory. Was also surprised at the lack of any bench. Bench played maybe five minutes only because of foul issues. If playing time was the reason for their parent issues then that is a shame because I think the facts are pretty evident to anyone watching. All of that being said, I still think they have five VERY good players and will be tough for anyone to handle. I will be very interested in how their game goes with Unioto which could be an indication of how things go the rest of the way.
As for the Lancers, I hope there isn't a let down before Monday's game at Belpre. I think FH is better but Belpre won the first game last year after an emotional win over NY so we better be ready. Rooting for both the Cats and the Lancers to make a deep run in the tournament to represent the Hocking.

dboy -- agree with you completely. If Waterford and Fed Hock don't have 40 wins combined by the end of the season i will be very surprised.

Big game tonight in Belpre. Lancers look to assert themselves and keep their fate in their own hands for the league. Win out and we share the league title.

Belpre gets the win over Federal Hocking 76-68, good win for the Eagles early in the season.
