Thanks.
Marietta's size is about the same as last year. The strength of the team is the junior and senior guards. Three of the four seniors are inside players, and their play will be key to the team's success. A sophomore starter is very key also, having two good games so far. If she can keep her confidence going and get comfortable playing varsity, she will be a large asset. Other sophomores will also have to have success spelling the starting guards. It could come together very nicely for the Tigers, but I believe the three senior inside players are the most key components whose range of possible play could be from proficient to less than that, and where they fall in that range will be the most determining factor of the ultimate degree of success the team has. They also need another sophomore inside player to step up and be able to spell the three senior inside players when needed.
I think Marietta, Logan, Jackson, and Warren will battle for the first four spots in the league standings, and the other three teams will battle for the other three spots.
Logan wins a big one at Marietta to put Logan firmly in the driver's seat for the SEOAL championship with wins over Warren, at Marietta, and at Jackson(on the most fortunate ending to steal a big win away from the Ironladies). Without that big game ending trey it to beat Jackson, it would still be a dogfight with Logan in the best position with a win at Marietta. Here are the stats from the Marietta Times:
Logan 13 13 17 10- 53
Marietta 7 16 11 10- 44
Logan (6-0) : Bailey Topf 4-9 4-8 17; Loryn Cassady 2-5 7-8 14; Abbie Linton 5-10 12; Stephanie Murphy 2-5 1-1 6; Brooke Simons 1-3 2
Marietta (4-1) : Erica Dawson 10-24 1-1 23; Maegan Grosel 4-10 2-3 10; Ali Summers 1-7 3-6 5; Betsy Schramm 1-4 2; Elizabeth Stoll 1-4 2; Amanda Brown 1-4 0-2 2
Teams stats:
Logan: Shooting 18-42 (42.8%) 3 pt shooting 5-12 (41.6%) Rebounds 16 (Linton 6) Assists 9 (Linton 2) Steals 5 (Linton 2) Turnovers 18
Marietta: Shooting 15-57 (26.3%) 3 pt shooting 2-12 (16.6%) Rebounds 29 (Summers 12) Assists 6 (Dawson 2) Steals 8 (Grosel 3) Turnovers 13
These stats are somewhat flawed as you can see there are 8 points missing from Logan. I had them all from freshman post player Ashley Frasure who played very well with three FG in the 2nd qtr and one in the 3rd. I don't think she took 10 shots to get them, which is what it would take to have the team shots add up. Logan post players(Linton, Murphy, Frasure) went no worse than 11 for 25 (44%). While the +13 rebounding edge for Marietta can be mainly attributed to the post players(Schramm, Stoll, and Summers), and it was a main reason, along with the team defense being +5 on turnovers, that Marietta had way more shots than Logan. However the post players shooting was no better than 3 for 15 (20%). The shooting stats don't add up as Marietta made 18 FG by my count, with 3 of them being treys by Dawson(I had her for 9 FG , 22 points, and Brown for 2 FG, and Grosel with 5 FG and just one FT). 18 of 57 for Tigers on shooting would be 32% rather than the 26% shown in the paper. I also had Marietta with just 5 of 13 (38%) on free throws, compared to Logan's 13 for 19 (68%).
So the bottom line is the shooting with Marietta getting no more FG than Logan with less treys on many more shots, along with the poor foul shooting. Logan played a very good game to take a good inside track to the league title. I was impressed with the ball handling at all positions by Logan, and without it their turnover numbers would have been obnoxious against the Marietta defense.
