Yes and neither are probably any good for the rest of us. They definitely looked out of sorts. Lots of turnovers and not so much energy. I was able to sit in the Waterford section and heard that they have been dealing with some sickness which isn't good against a team like Sheridan. But the fundamental stuff has definitely regressed and my guess is they will work on that to begin the year. My surprise was more with the Generals as they looked really good. They seem to have some lulls on offense but the Waterford defense is really good as well. This was one of those good ugly games if you will. Also, congrats to Avery Wagner on scoring her 1,000th point. I'm sure she would trade it for a win but a great accomplishment in a system that always has good players but also has balanced scoring. I think both these teams have a bright outlook.

Lancers have Southeastern tomorrow before starting a difficult stretch next Thursday with five difficult games. Next Thursday will be Waterford to get that stretch going. Not saying FH wins but I think it will be an interesting game and, win or lose, could start us in the right direction for that five games in twelve days.

The Trimble Tomcats pulled a big win today. They handed defending district champion Portsmouth Notre Dame their second loss of the year, winning 42-36. The TVC-Hocking girls division is really deep this year.

That is a very good win for Trimble and if I am not mistaken, it was played at Notre Dame. Basically midway through the season and all but one of the Hocking teams have winning records.

Big game on tap this week with Federal Hocking going to Waterford on Thursday. Saw Saturday's score with Waterford thumping Newark Catholic so they may be trending in the right direction. The Lancers struggled against Southeastern but they may have been looking ahead to this game. This stretch of games with Waterford, Minford, Belpre rematch, Chippewa and Athens will give us a good tune up for the tournament.

I heard the Federal Hocking vs. Waterford was moved to Monday. Can anyone verify this?

Federal Hocking travels to Waterford for the rematch and the first leg of a very difficult four games in eight days (Waterford, Belpre, Chippewa, Athens). Lancers have to have this game to have any chance at the league title. Made some changes that I think will give the Wildcats some fits. It may be a longshot to win this game but Lancers have to keep building for the postseason. Meanwhile Belpre gets the night off to prepare for Thursdays rematch in Stewart. Current League Standings after the first round -

Waterford 5-0 11-1
Belpre 4-1 8-3
Federal Hocking 3-2 9-3
Trimble 2-3 6-4
Southern 1-4 8-5
Eastern 0-5 1-10

Should be another good game tonight between the Lancers and the Wildcats. I suspect both teams will be a little rusty tonight since both have been out of school dealing with the snow. I have not seen FH play since December, so I am curious to see the new wrinkles the Lancers have put in. I would.have loved to see Cotrrill's triple double vs Southeastern. I guessing they have scrapped the 10-12 man rotation and are working to get some better shots instead of the first thing that comes open. Patience and controlling the tempo are keys for FH and they have to shoot well from 3. For the Cats, make Cotrill work for everything, handle the press, pound the offensive bpressure, and play Wildcat defense. I think the Cats win again but it's a little closer this time.

Wildcats 56
Lancers 50

Waterford leads at the half 30-25. FH ends the half on a 10-2 run to cut it to 5.

Waterford 60
Federal Hocking 41
Waterford hot early, F-H hot in the 2nd to cut it to 5 at half. Waterford opened it to 10 late in the 3rd and pulled away in the 4th. Very physical game both ways. Fed Hock didn't shoot it as well as they are capable and Waterford had a pile of turnovers again, some totally unforced and some forced by Fed Hock defense.
Wagner had 23 for Waterford

Give me FH to win the league. Waterford 4th, I sat in there section and they have to many issues to even win the league this year

Sitting in there section showed me that the results on the court don’t matter, just in the crowd. Based on the crowd, Waterford can’t beat FH or Belpre once, especially won’t beat them twice!!

I'll take my crow in soup please. Waterford just too much for the Lancers. They aren't deep but you can see them developing a little more off the bench and somehow their defense is getting better. Lancers have been held to under 60 points only four times and one was in a blowout win of Eastern so really we are talking about three games. A 59-57 win over Southeastern, the first game against Waterford was 55 points and last night was 41 which is their only game below 55. I think if you watch Close/Hilverding work together you see how the two of them have a great feel for the game and work off of each others strengths. And, yes, talking to a couple of the fans I think they are all feeling better which is bad news for whoever they are playing. The problem Federal Hocking has is handling teams with an inside presence and Waterford and Belpre both have that in a big way. Gave up 24 to Bills and 23 to Wagner. I agree with Shoot_it_from_Deep that the Wildcats will need to clean up their ball control and Federal Hocking tried to follow the Sheridan blueprint of pressuring the guards but it just wasn't good enough. But they will face some teams in the tournament that have that ability along with an inside presence. For the Lancers, it's a good thing there aren't too many teams in the D VI district with that DNA but eventually they will need to fix it or find some way to overcome it. I don't see Belpre beating Waterford the second time around but I think they could if everything goes right and that game will be at Belpre. As for Thursday, we have to keep Bills in check and right now I don't know that we can. Good luck to the Cats moving forward. And I have to say they have one of the nicer fan bases. Always enjoy playing against and talking to them.

Very difficult to win at Belpre. If you get a win there you know you’re way better than them.

Waterford played two games this past weekend at the classics and probably played their best game yet vs Tusky Valley.
They are still struggling with turnovers but have picked up their defensive game as they always do down the stretch to tournament play. They have missed wide open layups and short range shots but have picked up these wins with their defensive play
Smithberger is playing some unbelievable basketball. She has not scored a lot of points but has filled the stats. She is that player that creates the plays. Her looks inside - rebounds - and court awareness have been huge factors in these wins.
Sury and Wagner are just doing what they do best.Sury had a monster game vs TV and Wagner played one her best all around performances vs Canal Winchester. These three seniors are really playing good basketball right now.
Pottmeyer has improved greatly since the beginning of the year. She is still very young and will continue to grow as the season goes on. Her defense is very solid. She gets a little handsy sometimes but has played some solid defense in these bigger games.
Hurley comes off the bench and has had some good performances.

Free throw shooting has been their biggest weakness. Which is odd because Close’s teams have always been pretty good from the line. It’s hurt them especially in these bigger games. (The TV game Sury was 2-8- which is uncharacteristic for her)
They have some big games coming up (@belpre and both FF games) that will be good games. Tough matchups but Waterford continues to put the pedal down come mid January and starts to pick up steam for their post season run.
And after looking at their remaining schedule I like that they are taking on Williamstown in February which will be a good matchup heading into the tournament.

Good luck to the wildcats on the rest of their season. Looking forward to seeing the post season action.

Waterford is playing well and I think something has changed there, probably just more time playing together but they seem more confident now. I agree that Pottmeyer is coming on and Malec had a couple of big threes against TV so they may now be a five headed monster. I have been a fan of Smithberger for a while now. She just plays the game the right way - doesn't care about anything but winning and she makes winning plays all the time. Federal Hocking played after them on Saturday so I watched that game and the stats for their game were posted on the big board at one point and I was thinking they only had 9 turnovers in that game but could be wrong. But you are right on the defense and from talking to our coaches I think I know why. I have no idea about Mondays game as I did not see it.

As for the Lancers, inconsistency is the biggest hurdle. Didn't play good against Waterford, Played great vs Belpre and then Out of control vs the Chips but good again last night against Athens. Frustrating to say the least. I thought the Chippewa game could have been won but shot selection was the downfall. And I think that is the problem we are facing right now. Still having some problems defending post players but getting better. Whereas Waterford seems to be more confident and playing better as a unit, the Lancers seem to be struggling a bit with this at times.

And I have to admit that the Belpre loss to Warren surprised me. I was shocked that we handled them as easily as we did but the Warren loss was not expected. No disrespect to Warren who I think is better than people think. But I think the Eagles are in a bit of a funk right now and, luckily, they have a 6-7 game stretch of easier games to get thinks worked out before playing Waterford again. If they lose any of those then I would be concerned.

I think the Hocking is setting up to have a good tournament run.

Waterford ran away with this one. Running clock in the second half. 47-15. Continue to remain undefeated in the Hocking division.

Kendall Sury scored her 1000 point in the first few minutes of the game. They rotated a lot of people in for different looks. It looked like Close was trying to get some ideas for a tournament play and some lineups. Their defense was tighter and more aggressive. I like his intensity on their defensive play when they play in these types of games. He definitely focuses on that going into these next couple of weeks.
The girls were sandwiched in between two boys games for a triple header, which was different. There were a lot of people in the stands and coming to Waterford is always a good experience.m. I heard someone say that they were doing the triple header again next week with eastern. Seems like a good idea to put Fans in the stands.

I will say that Waterford starting five is definitely looking better each game. The Pottmeyer girl played some pretty good defense. Smithberger, Sury, Wagner all were great supporting roles as well as playmakers. Malec hit some dagger 3s and is looking more confident shooting. They are definitely playing good basketball right now. Could clean up some shots and passes, but that will come with time, looking forward to hearing how game goes on Monday at FortFrye.

I hope Waterford plays Athens again. That guy on here that keeps bragging about them scoring 100 needs another chance to see what a good coach looks like.
