Oak Hill at Minford 2-9
Oak Hill at Minford 2-9
Oak Hill defeated Minford at home 79-26.
Hats off to the Minford Falcons, though the record didn't look it, the Falcons pressed on. Regular season is now wrapped up with the Sectional tournament game still to be played at Valley High School next Thursday at 8pm vs. Peebles. Minford saddled with the injury bug 2 starters and a sub (Carrie Wynn, Kylie Berry & Sagan Gampp), lost another player deep in the 3rd period with looks to be a fracture to a finger.
Oak Hill reeling off the loss to Fairland, used quick defense and outside shooting to go on top 25-8 after one. The second period was much the same result as the Oaks outscored the Falcons 21-5 to take a 46-13 halftime lead.
The third period was more evenly matched with Oak Hill's 11 points to Minford's 7, but the Oaks reeled off a 22-5 scoring margin in the fourth period, to take the win.
The only thing I felt that should have been handled better was Oak Hill late in the 3rd period still shooting lights out in three's, and keeping the starters in the game with holding a 40-point lead.
That to me is uncalled for when you have 9 players sitting on the bench, with plenty of opportunity to play in this game. Junior varsity only played 2 periods, so those JV players had plenty of time left to play.
Starters were in till 4 minutes left in the game, being replaced one at a time.
Shameful!
Good luck to Minford and all area teams in tournament play.

You forgot to mention the starters were basically all out with 3 minutes left in the FIRST period and were subbed in and out the rest of the game. Those pesky details. But we're getting ready to play the the #1 team in WV Sat and and getting ready for tournament. So if shameful is what it takes to get the girls ready so mote it be. Thats what's kids problems are these days, the parents and adults are just as whiny probably more so than the kids. I do hope the young lady that had what appeared to be a wrist injury is ok.

We've heard it all before... yeah yeah another whiny parent that thinks everything should just be handed to their kids.
I'm sure your logic is let the oak hill girls who work their tails off all year round play a quarter and half, so your girls can play a whole game and keep it closer... Essentiallly punishing the kids that work their butts off, and rewarding the kids that don't.... Nice!
We've said it before... if you don't like getting beat... then get better!

You know I thought the same thing when I have watched them play, until I saw an interview witha football coach in Texas who was playing his starters during every qtr of each game and he basically beat everyone he played badly. He stated that he used to bench the starters by the 2nd qtr all season and then in the playoffs they would get beat early cause his starters plaed very little. And the same can be said for the Oakes, they are usually n control by the half or third qtr, but it isn't Coach Hales job to stop his team but to get them ready fr those deep tourny runs. Yes t stinks to get blown out, and maybe pressing full court up 30 with 3 min to go isn't kosher, but I understand it when you look at it from their point of view and what their main goal is, State title. Just a different view of it all to think about

You are right, at some point. People have said that for how many years now.
There will be a time when the talent is not there, there will be a time when girls don't live basketball like our girls have. When that day comes we will have 20+ years of great memories to look back on.
And when that day comes that we don't work hard then we should get beat.

Are you kidding me? It's hard to believe in this day and age anyone would try to justify such actions. It's just plain lack of good sportsmanship and it sure doesn't benefit either team.
I like what the Westfall football coach said after a game last fall. He was ask after a game in which Westfall won why they didn't continue to run a wide open offense with his second team. He stated he knew which plays to call that would give them the best chance to score. He said he didn't call those plays because it was far more important to teach good sportsmanship than to put points on the board. I and others now have the upmost respect for Westfall's coach.

I think they need to come up with a rule that if a team leads by 30+ points at the half the clock runs non stop in the second half.It would eliminate these 76-13 type games...Nobody benefits from that.

Let's just not keep score. No winner, no loser, no tournament, no state champs.
Everyone meet at half court and sing Kumbaya.

Or play hard and play to win but do so with class and tact. There is no need or excuse to grind someone into the dirt!

I have been on both ends of big wins and big losses and I guarantee you that every coach is fine with the way Doug does it. I have heard coaches say,"doug could have beaten me by 100 , he held them off us much as he could."
Are they mad, I'm sure they are, they just got beat by 50+. But they are probably more upset with how far they have to go to get better.
As a coach you do not want the other coach to stop what they are good at.

Re: Oak Hill at Minford 2-9
I sat behind the OH bench and Hale pulled 3 starters at the 3 min. mark. Didn't understand why #20 started for the JV and also started for the varsity. Good player and I heard someone say she was a freshman. Agree OH could have scored 100 points on Minford as both Hale and Butler were hitting threes. I'm sure Hale played 10 players but there were 2 or three that didn't get in the game. It would have been good to see all the players get in this game but evidently there was a reason they didn't. I think one of their starters was in street clothes. Anyway OH took the SOC again and they deserve it. Minford was down this year and lost another player in the game with a finger injury. Think that makes four starters lost during the season. Don't know how far OH will go but I hope they do well. Good luck ladies.

I have to disagree with you on one fact: not taking starters out is not bad. Most of the kids that start have worked their tails off to get where they are and why should they have to sit on the bench because other athletes chose to not better their game. I say leave em in till the end and what will be will be. I am sure if you asked the coaches and they were being honest about it, they would say the same thing.
Good luck to Minford and all area teams in tournament play.
