IRONTON — The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers dress only eight varsity players. But don’t think the Lady Tigers are short-handed.
With three starters getting in first half foul trouble, Ironton went to its bench and still rolled past the Jackson Ironladies 66-37 Tuesday in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game.
“We didn’t play with any emotion. We did too much reaching on defense and got in foul trouble,†said Ironton coach Doug Graham. “Fortunately, we got good play off the bench. That’s a big plus to see guys come off the bench and help us.â€
Ironton had four players in double figures led by Lorna Ceaser with 18 points. Brea Tackett scored 12 points, Mercedes Crockrel had 10 points and Nikki Elswick came off the bench to score 10.
Ironton (4-0, 2-0) dominated the glass by out-rebounding Jackson 41-20. Crockrel had nine rebounds, Ceaser eight, and Tackett and Elswick six each.
Crockrel also had five steals and two assists. Tackett handed out five assists.
Kelsey Martin had 10 points and seven rebounds for Jackson (0-2, 0-1).
The lead changed hands seven times in the first quarter with Ironton taking an 11-10 lead on a 17-footer by Crockrel with eight seconds on the clock.
Ironton scored five straight points to start the second quarter before Jackson got within 16-14 on baskets by Nicole Chapman with 3:28 left in the half.
But a putback by Elswick, two free throws by Tackett, and two more foul shots by Alex Taylor extended Ironton’s lead to 22-14 at the half.
The Lady Tigers went on a 6-0 run to start the second half. Ceaser had two shots inside and Crockrel’s steal and layup put Ironton up 28-14.
Kara Stiffler made a foul shot with 6:31 on the clock to halt Ironton’s run, but Tackett scored seven points including a trifecta as the lead grew to 35-17 with 4:34 left in the quarter.
The Lady Tigers led by as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter.
Ironton hosts Warren Friday in a league game. Warren beat Marietta 68-62 in overtime.

Re: Ironton vs Jackson
Ironton is a good team but, not thirty points better. The Ironladies for the second time this year played with no emotion or urgency and appeared to have only one offensive set, walked to positions in out of bounds plays and were poor fundamentally. I guess that's how your get beat by thirty? Good luck to the tigers the rest of the year.
