1st Rd. Waverly @ Chillicothe
SEOAL Champion vs. 3rd in SOC II
2 of the more accomplished programs in the recent past
Chillicothe has dominated the series and knocked off a State ranked Waverly team a few years ago in the 1st round of the tourney with a major upset. Can Waverly return the favor? Thoughts?

should be a fun game. who can possess the ball and take advantage of the scoring opps. hopefully a good one to watch. best of luck.
Re: 1st Rd. Waverly @ Chillicothe
First one this season was pretty lopsided (6-0) in Chillicothe's favor. Waverly will have to play much better this time around to keep it close. Chillicothe is playing very well right now.
Re: 1st Rd. Waverly @ Chillicothe
Waverly was without Kennedy Roseberry, Harrison Martin, and Rheadon Remy during their meeting earlier this season.
Re: 1st Rd. Waverly @ Chillicothe
socman.....
Waverly always has a good squad. Chillicothe will not take them lightly. I expect a good game. Coach Roseberry has done a nice job with the team in his first year. He is a quality guy.
I know Waverly was without some key players, but the score could have been worse. Chilly called off the dogs early in the first meeting and brought up 6 JV players who got second half playing time.
There are not too many common opponents between the two schools to judge results from.... only Jackson I think. (Which Waverly got a nice result from recently, 3-1) Chillicothe beat Jackson 6-0 and 1-0.
Waverly has scored 62 goals on the season (3.88 /game) and given up 26 goals. (1.63 / game). Chillicothe has scored 78 goals on the season (4.88/game) and given up 21 (1.31 / game). Waverly has scored 4+ goals in 7 different games. Chillicothe gave up 3 goals once, on the road in Marietta in a 3-1 loss.
To win the game Waverly will have find a way to score a few goals on Chillicothe while limiting the Cavs chances, keeping the score low. Chillicothe will not give up too many goals, if the regular season results hold true.
The biggest thing that hurts Waverly is their strength of schedule. I believe they played 5 games against D2 schools this year and 11 games against D3 competition. Compare that to Chillicothe that played 4 games involving D1 opponents and 12 games against D 2 opponents. (No D 3 opponents) Its very hard for Waverly to get prepared for tournament play and the level of soccer they will see in the D 2 tournament with the schedule they play, IMHO. I think the tournament results in recent years show that to be true. (That's not to say that they can't have tournament success, because they can step up and get it done.... but its hard)
This time around I would say the starters and key players for their respective squads will be on the field much longer. Here's hoping for a quality, injury-free game between two good squads.

This might be called the "Swine Flu Game." Whomever is the healthiest might be the winner. I'm not sure about Chillicothe, but the flu has really hit WHS pretty hard the last few days. This has been the unluckiest season imaginable for Waverly. I really thought the soccer gods would smile come tournament time, then we draw Chillicothe for the first round. Can't get worse than that for luck. Here's to a healthy game.

yeah, that's a tough break for waverly. ineligible players, tough losses/ties, bad tourney draw, and the flu. i kinda feel sorry for the kids.
Re: 1st Rd. Waverly @ Chillicothe
Sorry to hear that..... hope the kids get healthy fast.
So far Chillicothe has stayed relatively healthy, but who knows what next week will bring. Gallia last night had to cancel the JV game because of depleted numbers due to the flu, etc...
Sounds like Waverly has just had one of those years....

Re: 1st Rd. Waverly @ Chillicothe
there are always reasons "why" but that is the reason they roll the ball to the center and blow the whistle and play two halves. who is the best on a given day. that's what is great about high school sports is which coach can get what they need out of their players each and every game. gotta love it.
Re: 1st Rd. Waverly @ Chillicothe
Maybe there is no such thing as "luck" but Waverly had enough bad luck this year for the next 10 years.
Re: 1st Rd. Waverly @ Chillicothe
Kinda Ironic that Waverly draws the only team they were worried about at the start of the season

Re: 1st Rd. Waverly @ Chillicothe
Maybe they should have moved the game to Waverly. When Luke Purpero was a senior Waverly was a top seed and because of rain and the holy land {football field} Waverly had to play in Chillicothe. Of course the Cavs upset Waverly. Might have been nice to return the favor.

"Upset" should be used loosely with that game in 2005. Waverly was ranked too high and Chillicothe was only ranked as a 4th seed due to some political situations. Chillicothe was the better TEAM that year and the game could've been played anywhere, they were going to come out winners.
Re: 1st Rd. Waverly @ Chillicothe
I respectfully disagree soccerfanatic. That Waverly team was amazing. Chillicothe came out tough and Waverly wasn't used to playing from behind. Soccer is a funny game where any team can win on any given night. It just happened not to be Waverly's that day.
As for last night, Chillicothe and Waverly both played with a lot of passion and excitement. The first 20 some minutes went scoreless with both teams having opportunities to open with the game's 1st goal. Once Chillicothe got the first one in the next two came with ease and broke Waverly's back. The score may be the same from the first meeting but Waverly played much better this time around and really had a chance to be in the game with a couple of quality finishes early on. Chillicothe is a great team from 1 to 11 and on to their coaches. Good luck the rest of the way!
As most of you know I am Waverly's assistant coach and I had great pleasure in coaching them this season. I would like to thank all the seniors for a wonderful experience and for helping Brian and I along the way this year.
