District Final: Chillicothe v. Marietta

Post by Bucknuts »

This will be the 4th straight year Chillicothe and Marietta have played in the districts. These two teams have created quite a rivalry. The games are usually very tight.

The game will be at Valley High School in Lucasville, Saturday, 4 PM.

These two league foes have won all 5 SEOAL crowns since the league was formed in 2006. Marietta won the league in 2006 and this year. Chillicothe won 3 straight from 2007-2009. During that time they played each other 8 times. The out come of those games? 3 wins for Chillicothe, 3 wins for Marietta, and 2 ties. (3-3-2) Can't get too much more even than that....

In tournament play over the last 3 years Marietta has proved to be a thorn in Chillicothe's side. They won 2-1 semi-final victories in both 2007 and 2008, then won 4-3 in OT in last year's district final.

Chillicothe lost in the district finals to Jackson in 2005, and Warren in 2006. This will be the 4th district final for Chillicothe in the last 6 years.

Marietta will play in its 4th staight district final after dropping down to D2. They won the district title in 2007 and 2009. (Athens defeated Marietta in the 2008 finals)

Marietta is scoring a lot of goals. They have scored 15 goals in their 3 victories while allowing just 2. Chillicothe has yet to give up a goal in tournament play. Something has to give.

It should be another great match. Thoughts???

Their games were played 2 days apart this year due to weather. The played to a Marietta 4-2 win on Thursday evening...then traveled to Chilli to play a Saturday 145p game (1-1 tie). That loss and tie is their only marks in their last 9 games.

Marietta dominated the first game...I wasn't at the second game but heard Marietta didn't play well at all. I would say that it is lucky for us that we played them during the end of the season when they were hot. I'm sure it would be a huge surprise to have played them in their first 5 games to now.

I will say Marietta by 2...if they can continue with the strong second half games.

The thing that is different about this game compared to the rest in the tournament is these two teams know a lot about each other. I would venture to guess that Marietta did not know much about waverly or zane trace before they played them and probably the same for chillicothe going into a game against fairfield union. These two teams know each other though, they know the others strengths and weaknesses and know how to play each other from experience. Chilli hasn't been giving up goals and Marietta has been scoring them but from their previous games, especially the first, obviously Marietta knows how to score on them. The fact that Marietta didnt play well and still was able to tie gives a little reassurance for Marietta but should be a good hard fought game both ways. I'm gonna say Marietta by 1 maybe 2. But it'll be close.

0-0 at half

Marietta scores 82 seconds into second half, then adds a pk with 3 minutes left. Good game.... Good luck to Marietta in regional play.
