Both Athens and South Webster played very hard tonight. Athens had a good second half and created more of the opportunities with some good passing, but couldn't find the back of the net for a second goal. S. Webster played well on D and finished off their one main opportunity late on to tie it up.

Athens/Webster was a fair result. Athens had the 55/45 advantage in the game. It was exciting to watch the end to end action.
I couldn't believe the yellow that was given to an Athens player for an open field tackle, clearly the tackle was clean and hard.
However, the crew made up for it by changing the PK call. The center signaled the PK, but the assistant called him over to overturn the call. In the scrum, an Athens player had fouled a Webster defender. The defender reached out for the ball as he lay on the ground (man I hate that move) and grabbed it (hence the PK call). IMO, the refs made one heck of a difficult call to overturn the PK call, but it was the right one.
It was a great game, I think both teams could lay claim to have been deserving to win.

Any information on the Wheelersburg vs. Zane Trace match?
I know Burg won 2-0, but I was surprised at the score line!

Boyd Brown did get a red card sometime before the Athens game. I don't know which game it was in though (meaning I don't know Warren's schedule and he may have already served his two games.) A red card results in a two game suspension for a player NOT including the game in which he was ejected. So... if Athens was his first game suspended and then Warren hasn't had a game since, then he would be out for the Marietta game.

Athens 1
Alexander 1

Alexander keeps the Challenger Cup for the 4th year in a row.

The Spartans scored about 10 minutes into the game and held the Dogs scoreless until 14 minutes left to go in the game.

There will be some whining at Athens High School tomorrow.

Both teams fought hard and Alexander did what they had to do to hold onto the cup (when there's a tie the team that held the cup keeps it... Alexander won it in 2005 and has tied in the cup game since then) . Athens has hit a bit of tough patch lately and has struggled to put the ball in the back of the net against some of the more defensive teams. They'll snap out of it and it's good to see the Athens team really try to pass the ball around the field. Sometimes, teams like this will struggle to make the possession count on the scoreboard. They still haven't lost in the last 12 games, they just need to do the little extra to turn some of these ties into wins.

Congrats to Alexander for holding onto the cup for another year. They played really hard. Athens is certainly frustrated but should keep their heads up. They have only lost to Alexander twice in the last ten years... and even though tonight felt like a loss, it's not.

Go get Marietta on Wednesday.

Straight red cards are 2 game suspension, not counting the game the player is in.
Soft reds (two yellows) carry no suspension.
It depends on the type of red.
