Here we go again
Game #1 at marietta 3-1 Marietta win
Game #2 at marietta 2-1 Chillicothe win

Game # 3 at Lucusville ???

Last season at Lucusville marietta was a 2-1 winner

Who will benifit more from playing on the faster surface and wider field?
Which coach will come into the game with the best game plan?
What call be the official will make the losing team angry?
Who will the hero of the game be?
Who will win round # 3

The score of the second game at Marietta was 2-1 Chillicothe, not 2-0.

Should be another classic match.

I would not even try to predict a winner for this game. It may come down to an unlucky bounce.

The one thing Marietta has going for them the last couple of years is there defense. In the last 8 games I believe Tony has three goals, two PK's and one from the field. If Marietta can keep him contained they should have a good chance.

I would not be suprised if it went to OT and PK's.

Should be a real barn burner. We will have to see which team shows up to play.

This should be a really good game. It's also fitting that the two are meeting up in the final, because they have been the two best teams in DII in the southeast all this year. I think it's one of those games where anything can happen.

Marietta might have a slight edge as they have played better at Lucasville than Chillicothe has. After reading the article about the Chilli-FU semi in their paper, it's obvious that the field and past failures at Lucasville really weigh heavily in the minds of the Cavs. Maybe they've gotten over this with the win over FU, but we'll see. They've certainly underachieved at Lucasville and it's interesting to note, that with all of the SEOAL titles in a row (3) and the two star players, they still don't have a district title.

I see this one being close with the winner coming in OT or going to spot kicks to decide it. Marietta comes in with the experience of playing in their third straight final and a slightly more reliable defense. Chillicothe has the two stars, that if Marietta lets them loose for a few moments, can really hurt them and be game changers. Marietta kept these two in check during last year's semi. Can they do it one more time? I also think Chillicothe came into the game a bit too cocky last year (the wild hair didn't help them any), but they're more than smart enough to learn from that.

On a side note: Lucasville is such a great facility and it's nice to continue to see them hosting these games!

soccerfanatic.....

Chillicothe was in the District Finals in both 2005 and 2006. You said Marietta has played better at Lucasville over the past 3 years.

Chillicothe lost to Jackson in the District Finals in 2005 and lost to Warren in the District Finals in 2006. Basil and Skowronek both played and started in that 1-0 loss to Warren in 2006.

I would say Marietta played better than Chillicothe in 2008 to get the win coming back from a 1-0 halftime deficit, but its highly arguable they played better in 2007. Remember they were playing a man up for most of the match and got scored on while playing a man up.

Chillicothe has not fared well at Lucasville for sure, but to make it to the districts 5 straight years since coming to D2, and the finals 3 times is still a nice accomplishment. Has any other Southeast District D2 program done that over the past 5 years? Only Chillicothe.......

Just have to get over that next hurdle now.

Should be another great Chillicothe / Marietta game.

I think its also important to note that Marietta has made it to the districts each of their 4 years since dropping down to D2 in the Southeast District. If Marietta wins they would be the only repeat winner in the past 5 years. If Chillicothe wins there would have been 5 different winners in the last 5 years.

2004 Athens (Marietta and Chillicothe still D1)

2005 Jackson over Chillicothe
2006 Warren over Chillicothe
2007 Marietta over Hillsboro
2008 Athens over Marietta

2009 Marietta or Chillicothe

Oops... forgot to talk about the 1-0 loss to Warren in 2006. Although it adds to my point of underachieving in finals. Made the change to my previous post. To add to the post above, Marietta (including this year) has been in this DII district for three years.

It's not meant as disrespect to Chillicothe when I say it's a surprise that they haven't won a district title. If anything, I'm surprised because Chillicothe has been a very talented and dominant team in the area. Three straight titles in the SEOAL are proof of that. I believe, for it to truly be considered a fully successful season for the dominant teams in the southeast, a team has to win the districts or it's considered, at least to a small degree, a season that came up a bit short. Good for Chillicothe for making in there five times, but winning it is the important thing.

We certainly know how well Chillicothe has played since 2005 in Athens considering Chillicothe is the only team to beat us in the sectional rounds this decade since the split to three divisions. As Bucknuts said, the districts is the next big hurdle for Chillicothe. Win or lose tomorrow, the theme of the story can write itself from the Chillicothe perspective: Chillicothe finally overcomes their past failures in the final or Chillicothe comes up short again. Again, I'll stand by the slight edge to Marietta as they don't have the same mental block about finals as Chillicothe might have and has the experience of being there last year. Let's put the emphasis on SLIGHT edge to Marietta.

Yes, it's worth noting that both Chillicothe and Marietta have had very impressive runs since their move down to DII. There seems to be a history of that this decade as Athens appeared in and won four straight titles when they first moved down, then Chillicothe appeared in two straight finals when they moved down, and now Marietta has appeared in three straight title games since they moved down.

Marietta wins with a Schwendeman goal 4 mins. into OT (according to another site). Chillicothe came roaring back, down two goals nearing the end of regulation. Chilli scored with 3 mins. left to make it 3-2, then scored again a minute later to make it 3-3 and send it to OT.

Someone at the game will need to confirm this stuff... but this is the info out there so far.

Sounds like it was a heck of a game. Congrats to both teams for making it there. Marietta wins their second district in the last three years. Chillicothe might have come up a tad bit short in the final, but they had a great season and should be proud of the work they've done. To come back in the fashion they did sounds amazing.

Good luck in the next round Marietta.
