Best in Southeast Ohio??
Best in Southeast Ohio??
What schools do you think are some of the tops in SE Ohio?? I would have to say Adena, Alexander, Eastern (Beaver and Reedsville), and Wheelersburg are some of the best. What do you think?? I would love to see one of these schools put together a nice in-season tournament and invite all these teams and some of the other good ones to get these teams ready for tournament time!

Run-n-,
Those are all nice teams! My list would have to include the Washington County contingent of Waterford, Marietta and Warren.
Assuming that each team already has a full schedule, then putting together a tournament would be tricky to stay within the OHSAA rules. The tournament would have to have a legitimate scrimmage format and each team would need to have allowable scrimmages at their disposal. OHSAA only allows 22 matches on a maximum of 20 dates in a high school schedule. The rules allow five (I think, without reviewing) scrimmages. Scrimmages do not have to be used in preseason. My guess would be that most teams may have a scrimmage or two available. I am not sure how much definition has been applied as to what constitutes a scrimmage. A good stategy is to find tougher competition to engage in a pre-tournament scrimmage, like you suggest. I would think that is more likely to occur between two or maybe three schools and not the whole bunch.

No disrepect Ironman
North Adams MAY be having a decent year (record-wise) and MAY be doing well in the SHL, which they can be proud of, but that doesn't elevate them to the status as "one of the best in the Southeast."
Adena, Alexander, Eastern Pike, Marietta, Warren, Washington CH, Wheelersburg

OK...then why have a thread for people's opinions?
I know the teams you mentioned are the cream of the crop....I just mentioned another team who is solid and having a good year.
These threads are started all the time and once the obvious teams are mentioned other teams get mentioned as well....that's all I did.

Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
and you saying they are having a "decent" year is just as much of an understatement as someone saying they are one of the best is an exaggeration.

Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
Alexander moved up to 8th in the recent poll. They have a big match-up at Athens tonight with an opportunity to put a strangle hold on the TVC with a win. Good luck ladies.

Ironman
"Decent" - respectable; worthy; adequate; fair
I don't see where that is an "understatement" when it comes to North Adams. I think that would be a considered more of a compliment than a downgrade.
You are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. I never said you were not. I just don't think you can classify the Lady Dragons as "one of the best in the Southeast."
Yes, they are 9-3 and 7-1 (SHL). Unfortunately, that is not saying much other than they defeated the majority of the teams on their schedule. Defeating 7 teams in the SHL is not necessarily a huge accomplishment. Everyone knows the SHL is a "weaker" conference in the SE--history shows us that. Of course, it is good to see North Adams at least take advantage of that and win the matches they are supposed to win.
Other than Western Brown (Yes, a good win on your schedule!), has NA defeated anyone with a record above .500? NA struggled with Peebles. NA struggled with Whiteoak. The wins over Manchester and Lynchburg were even close. Wheelersburg handled NA pretty easily.
How do you think you would fair against Adena? Westfall? Huntington? Unioto? Southeastern? Zane Trace? Washington CH? Waverly? Valley? South Webster? Northwest? Eastern Pike? Alexander? Athens? Nelsonville York? Marietta? Warren? Gallia Academy? Eastern Meigs? OR would have to face these schools on a regular basis in their respective conferences for example.
But, you are entitled to your opinion as well as everyone else.

Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
my schedule? I teach/coach at one of their rivals.
Just like the "bigger" sports on here the SHL sometimes gets shorted.....I'm in no way saing NA is better than any teams mentioned...or even in the same "league".....just gave the best SHL team a mention....and I think "decent" is slightly insulting of a 9-3 team...it's somewhat insulting to the girls on a 9-3 team....they have won 75% of their games they have played. They did not make the schedule.....just played the games at a better than "decent", "adequate" rate.
Of the entire district......IMO they are still better than "decent" and I would guess they would lose to nearly all of the above teams you mentioned.
Nonetheless, as I simply mentioned.....they are pretty solid.
North Adams will likely win the SHL but using your terms would be probably 5th place in the much larger SEOAL...so yeah...if NA was in the SEOAL I wouldn't have mentioned them at all. I just knew of a team that had not been mentioned that had a good season going.
Is there anyone who doesn't think Alexander and Adena are the tops? Maybe a few folks from Marietta

Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
Adena is traditionally a great HS volleyball program, but I don't know anything about the team this year. I have watched both ALexander and Marietta play this year and they both have good VB talent. The difference is team height, ny bet would be on Marietta.
Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
Another team having a fine season for a school of 99 girls is Whiteoak. They are 8-2 and have been playing without one of their 5'11 athletic front line players.....she'll be back soon. Also have one of the finer front row players in D4.
Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
How about Fayetteville? Lost their first match of the season to New Richmond and haven't lost since(12 in a row). Currently 7-0 in the SHL(defeated North Adams & White Oak ) and stand 12-1 overall.
Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
I would've mentioned Fayetteville but they aren't in the SE District (which is what I typically go by on this site)
Fayetteville has some solid athletes and apparently a very good volleyball team.
Whiteoak is now 9-2

Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
The best are: Adena, Alexander, two Easterns, Wheelersburg by far!! Some other teams have soolid records, but those are misleading, it's all a matter of optics.. North AdAns for ex looks food in win/lose, but got beat very strongly by Wheelersburg, Just an exmple... Look Inside the numbers....
Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
Those teams are by far better than Marietta?
OK......I could see Eastern Meigs putting a beat down on the 16-0 Tigers.
"soolid records"
"it's all a matter of optics"
"North AdAns for ex looks food in win/lose" My personal favorite point.
Hard to make a strong point if you use 7 commas and no sentence ending periods.

Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
I would say Marietta can play with any of the teams mentioned. They are big and pass the ball very well. The setters don't have to move.
Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
SEOAL Champs - Marietta
TVC Hocking Champs - Waterford
The two best teams in the southeastern part of the Southeast Region.

Re: Best in Southeast Ohio??
Marietta has proven to be the top team in the area but don't be so quick to count The Lady Warriors of Warren Local out of it. They have played the Tigers nearly straight up and defeated Waterford in straight sets.
