Waverly vs. SW-

Post by lovevball8 »

Big match-up tonight at Waverly and it should be a good one. I'm going to have to go with Webster on this one. They won't make the same mistakes they did the first time around. Go Jeeps! Either way. I hope both teams bring their "A" game. I want to see some quality volleyball. Hopefully we'll get some good officials; they seem to be hard to come by these days...

I think Waverly will win tonight in 5. I think this will come down to the final set with Waverly prevailing. They only have two seniors, so Waverly will be good the next couple of years.

South Webster only has 2 seniors (in the rotation) as well. They are both 4 year starters and will be missed from a leadership and talent standpoint, but South Webster will be fine in the next few years too.

Tonight's game should be special for the girls from both teams. You work all spring and summer to put yourself in a position to play in a game like this. Now it is here---have fun with it.

Go Jeeps!

Congrats to the Jeeps as they win in 5 games. Waverly took the first two and Webster the last three. Definitely a game of momentum.

Good experience for Waverly heading into the tournament. Keep your heads up girls.

Games tight?

Congrats to SW on the win. Waverly should still be the #1 seed.

Scores were probably not what you would think for a five game match. Waverly won 12 and 16. Jeeps won 10 or 12 and 19 in the fourth game. Game five was 15-9.

Great crowd on hand. Two pretty evenly matched teams and just a nice evening of volleyball. I would have preferred a different outcome, but it was not to be.

What a great night of volleyball------Momentum is a fickle thing in this sport!

I believe the scores were

12-25, 16-25, 25-13, 25-19, 15-9

Waverly totally controlled game 1.

Game 2 was tight til 12 all and Waverly took over again.

Game 3 started out close and then Webster started to finally control the net with their blocking. I believe that once Webster started blocking some the match changed. The game went from 6-5 to 16-5 on the strength of Corey Sherman's serving and great blocking by Webster.

Game 4 was the most in doubt game of the first 4 by far. It went back and forth til 16-13 Webster leading went to 22-14. Waverly got back to 23-18 before webster closed it out.

Game 5 saw Webster grab the early lead 4-1 and and 8-5 only to see Waverly close to 10-9. I believe Waverly missed a serve and then Webster ran the table.................

If you only saw games 1 and 2 then you never would believe that Webster would have come back and won in 5. Crazy game.

As predicted, Great night of volleyball in waverly...hoping for a better outcome but i am guessing the Waverly girls learned a lot about themselves tonight and what it takes to go to the next level. The girls battled.
Momentum was critical!!!
Kudos to the south webster girls. They looked like a different team after the first two games.
Waverly crowd was absolutely AWESOME!!!
Keep fighting tigers... You still have a long way to go!!!

Very similair to the opening game between SW and Eastern Beaver. Webster is a slow starter but once they settle in they play great. When they get thier block going they are hard to beat.

I wanted to comment on our young kids and the way they contributed tonight.

Corey Sherman and Haley Potters----2 of our sophomores----were struggling early. Usually when younger kids struggle early you can write them off. Not tonight!!! Both of these young ladies stepped it up in game 3. Haley with some good hustle in the back early and then some good blocking later and Corey served 11 or 12 straight and took us from 6-5 to 17-5. They continued to play well in games 4 and 5. If we are going to make a long tournament run then these 2 need to continue to play well.

Haley "smurf" Murphy did a great job from the libero position as well in games 3-5. Mariah Sullivan struggled with her serve tonight, but her blocking early in game 3 turned this game around! Once Mariah started blocking her hitting came to the front and she is the best middle in the league and one of the best in Southern Ohio. Katie Hanes continues to improve and played a great game 4. Cassie Edwards came in and helped change the momentum too in games 3 and 4. These 4 girls are Juniors and will lead this team next year as a great Senior Class!!!

Brooklynn Scott played incredbly well tonight. She played decently well in the first 2 games, but in games 3-5 her backrow play might have even been better than her hitting from the outside. When she was in the back row very few balls hit the floor. Erin "homer" Homerosky was at her best as our setter tonight. She has become a great setter. Also, a great server and leader.
These 2 have started every game for 4 years and have a chance to win a SOC championship as Freshmen and Seniors.

Great Crowd at Waverly. Nice cheer block and lots of kids and adults. Your girls played just as hard as ours did. It will be an honor to share the title with you. I truly thought at the end of last season that we would go 14-0 in the SOC this year as we had everyone coming back and had swept Waverly last year.

Both teams have to play Valley next week. Valley is good enough to defeat either one of us.

Congrats Lady Jeeps on your big win!

Thank you for taking the time to give recognition to the individuals that together make Websters team great. These girls can be phenominal when they forget about what is expected of them, forget the crowd, and ignore the opponent and just play for the love of the game. When they don't think and just play with passion thier energy is infectious. When this team does not think and just plays the game they are dominant. Keep up the great work girls, good luck this weekend and don't take Valley too lightly they could take out Waverly or Webster next week. No one has the SOC title yet!

According to the Daily Times:

Brooke Scott had 21 kills and 16 digs
Mariah Sullivan had 17 kills

Alex Roback had 15 kills and 10 digs.

Classic Volleyball match at Waverly last night.

svbt, thanks for the praise of the whole team. A lot of times only the big hitters/blockers get the attention because they make the game exciting. Sometimes the supporting cast is forgotten. The big guns can't get their points without someone getting the ball to them. Our girls are a true team that respect and truely love each other. Never any bickering between them. I think they have even been accused of being a cult! lol

Sully, you are so right about the Jeeps playing for the love of the game and playing their best when they are having fun. Once they relaxed in the third game last night and starting enjoying the game, they probably played the best Jeep's volleyball I have seen them play this year.

svbt: So would that be Conner Scott's sister? Brooke.......... Powerful hitter.....how tall is she?

Passing is critical. I thought Webster did a much better job passing and setting up the big girls after the second game. Not often do you see a contest swing so dramatically.

Waverly fought back hard in the 5th game just couldn't get over the top. A five game match just may help both teams down the road.

svbt- thanks for commending all the players last night, it was a team effort, and even the smallest contributions can play a factor in keeping the momentum going. What a comeback!

It was also great to see the refs letting the girls play, you'll never have a perfectly officiated game, but overall it was fairly evenly called.

Looking forward to great volleyball this weekend!

MD, I really don't know the official answer. I can see if I can get my hands on a rule book tomorrow. My guess would be that it's not covered in the rule book but I could be wrong. It was really weird that a ref would do that before the game even started. I'll let you know more tomorrow if I can.
