The names here have been great. Estep, Allen, Shuler, Martin are all top notch in any conference. I think Chris Rapp at Portsmouth West deserves some consideration. The man has well over 200 wins and his teams are consistently competitive. He has done much to turn the PW program around in the last three years after taking a few years off. He's a class act and a winning coach!

You can't go wrong with many of the names on this list. Estep, Shuler, Allen are all excellent coaches. I want to add Portsmouth West's Chris Rapp to the mix. Here's a coach who has over 200 wins, has righted the ship at PWHS in 3 years and is an all-around quality guy.

I think Peebles' Judd Johnson could be added to this list. He's had a good run at Peebles with a few league titles, Sectional Championships and a District Championship on his resume.

When did Peebles win a district title?

Judd is a good coach.... I agree should have mentioned him.

What about Chris Rapp down at Portsmouth West? He has well over 200 wins and several sectional championships! And has back that program back over the past three years.

Peebles won a district title in 1999 and lost to Trimble in the Regional Semi's in extra innings, 2-1.

I've heard rumors that Doug Poage and Judd Johnson are coaching the Post 23 Jr. Legion team this summer. Sounds like they should have some pretty good coaching.

That could be true. I'm not sure. Judd's boy played for the Jr. team this past summer as a freshman. He's an up and coming talent. Gonna be a good one.

This subject can be looked at a couple of ways. Is it who helps a lot? Or is it who gets results year in and year out on the field? I look at a coach in a public school program who is almost always in the top half of their league and puts a good product on the field over a long period of time.

Top players = Top Coaches. Some coaches put in way more time and know way more than others, but let's put some of these coaches in historically losing programs and they will lose. Sad but true...

Don't agree with the losing part- good coaches will turn a program around and bring out the best athletes to make a program better, with time.

exactly...make the program BETTER! Now how do we quantify that? Could a program be better but still not have a winning record? If Mr. Estep coached at a "historically losing school" would he make them better by winning 1 or 2 more games a year? Yes! Are any of the coaches listed so far given credit for making their programs "better" or are we just listing teams that make it to the regionals or better? Just saying there are coaches out there that I consider top 5, based on what they get out of there student athletes.

The best coaches run the best programs......in other words, the best athletes play the game because they want to....for ex, here in Pa our basketball team leaves a lot to be desired....why? Because the kids dont like losing, therefore the best kids dont play basketball, its that simple. Our best basketball player in the school could be a three or four sport athlete but because the coaching staff is leaving a lot to be desired he decides to set out his senior year and prepare for baseball,If you have a program, you have selection of the best athletes, because they want to suit up for you

I think Farmer had and has a lot to do with Piketon becoming a championship team. Put Farmer on Waverly and Noble would be listed. Put Farmer on Eastern Pike and they are winning a championship. Dominate pitchers control teams destiny in tournament. FACT!!

Noble is a class act, and has built a very solid program that competes every year at Waverly. I understand what your'e saying, but listing him with Eastern Pike and Piketon probably isn't fair.
