I know thecatcher from Athens is a very good ball player. Wellston has Darnell, and Watkins from Belpre. should be a good race.

Maffin is the best pitcher in the Ohio hands down, The Chapman boy from Athens is the best all around player in my opinion.
I think Nick Hunter from NY deserves a little love. That young man is a very good pitcher and a fine outfielder.

im going to throw nestor from belpre out there for defensive. he's been a big part of belpre pitching along with watkins, who imo is the best pitcher in the tvc ohio.

Vinton County has a pitcher that has a real nice curve but I don't know his name!

Kyle Dean (Senior) -- Athens
Dean is every coaches dream. He calls the games for every Athens pitcher, is the Captain on the field and see's the ball from the batters box better then any player I have seen in over 5 years.
Douglas Chapman (Senior) -- Athens
Chapman strikes fear into any opposing pitcher. If you make a mistake he will make you pay. He can strike the ball a long, long way. Also, he can be just effective from the Hill, as he has recorded a ton of strikeouts in his efforts this season.
Dean Maffin (Junior) -- Athens
Maffin, like Chapman can do it from both the batters box and also from the hill. Maffin had one of the most fun seasons I have ever watched a Sophomore have at the Varsity level in many years. In his Junior season, Maffin is still effective and is hitting the ball even better.
Greg Pach (Senior) -- Athens
Pach is one of the fastest athletes I have ever had the pleasure watching. Nobody in SEOhio covers the outfield better and nobody steals bases better than Pach. He is the rare pure all-around talent that teams would kill for.
Daniel Gillespie (Senior) -- Athens
Gillespie is the most underrated player on the Athens roster. Gillespie has been Athens most consistent pitcher on the season and many have not heard of his success because in a lot of his outings he has not received great run support.
All good players...
Also, there is a lot of talent all throughout the league...

Titus Pierce could be a candidate for both but I see Thompson getting the defensive.

I hate these threads and won't get into any debate fearing I might disrespect another kid or player ... The only vote I would endorse is for catcher Kyle Dean from Athens ... (Probably because I was a catcher and enjoy watching really talented players play the position) ... Dean definitly fits in that category ... He's unbelievable behind the plate in every aspect of the game - superb arm, quick release, blocks everything, calls a great game, is good handeling the pitching staff ... On offense, he bats third on probably the best offensive team in the league and he might be the only player in the TVC who has signed to play for a Division I college.

Who did he signed with?
Also, your endorsement does not come as a surprise to me, that it being a Bulldog puts icing on the cake for you? Your bias is overt and insulting, and yet, you lay claim to a journalistic credo. If you would get out and see other players in the TVC (besides when they come to Rannow Field) you could possibly see other dynamic players.
Kyle Dean is a very good player and probably very deserving of the award. However, do you know anything about the other players in the TVC as much as you do about Mr. Dean? Can you give me any statistical evidence for lets say; Hunter from Nelsonville-York, Darnell from Wellston, Grillo from Vinton County, Watkins from Belpre, or Lawson of Alexander. (I did not purposely exclude Meigs other than I have not seen them play as of date.)
I could remember when the Athens Messenger used to be an "area paper." Today, it has become a liberal rag for all things Athens, Albany, and Ohio University but when it comes to surrounding areas such as Trimble-Glouster, Nelsonville, Federal-Hocking, and to some extent Vinton County the sport news coverage has waned. But yet, the Messenger counts on these areas for patronage. This is also another reason for the disrespect that this area receives when it comes to AP poll voting, All-District and All-Ohio voting. We face several inherent disadvantages in this region, we should not as a people be exclusive, or elitist, or apathetic among ourselves. We are only as good as our area news coverage.
This is just my opinion.

I think your taking your frustrations out on the wrong guy! The messenger is owned by some company in Australia. They could care less about anything but there bottom line. I have said this before and I'll say it again, There are basically 2 people and a few stringers working in the sports department. They do there best with what they have, and trust me they don't have much.
Don't take it out on one guy who does his best and to be honest does a good job. He does what he can with what he has. He is not allowed to have opinions when he writes an article for the messenger, but he is allowed to have an opinion here.

I am not frustrated as much as I am bewildered. We want nothing but the best for our children but yet we sometimes get in the way of ourselves; which makes us look uncouth. My disagreement with 93Bulldog goes back to Basketball season, when this same sort of topic reared its ugly head both on Boys' and Girls' forums. I was expanding on that and maybe unfairly so. Furthermore, it was not necessarily just to single out the Athens Messenger as an "end all, to be all." However, the Athens Messenger represents part of the problem within this region, along with ourselves and Ohio University. I guess I am expressing more of an sociological argument than that of mere frustration with one entity, group, or community.

Re: TVC Defensive and Offensive MPV canidates
Hawkeye ... Ive seen all the players in the TVC (both the Hocking & Ohio) Ive watched all the kids play the past two years ... I didn't get into any details in my post about certain players, or who should be offensive POY - or defensive POY ... I only said I liked one player (and I even stated that was perhaps because he was a catcher, which is my favorite position to watch) ... But Dean (who has signed to play for Ohio University next season) has been perhaps the best player on hands down the best team in the TVC-Ohio the last two years (facts totally support that notion whether I'm from Athens or not - they went 12-0 last year and are well on their way to finishing 11-1 this season) ... I could go on and on about why I like Kyle Dean to win some sort of post season award ... But in all honesty, I don't think the kid cares much about what people on a sports forum think - he's going to be playing for a good Division I school next year and winning a post season award in the TVC probably isn't going to be the highlight of his life.

Re: TVC Defensive and Offensive MPV canidates
BTW ... in terms of seeing kids play - I don't think there is a person in southeastern Ohio that has watched as many different players/teams than I have the last two years .... I spent lots of time out at Federal Hocking last year, Ive been to Glouster more times than I would like to admit ... On top of all the Athens County games ive watched, I spend the entire summer watching the 'commited' baseball players play legion ball. Kids like Tyler Thompson (Fed Hock), Kyle Dean, Lance Sharp (Fed Hock), Ben Doughty (Alex), etc..etc... there are a core group of kids that don't skip out on summer ball - or play half the summer season but then get drug off for football weightlifting and summer practices - that in the end usually become better baseball players when spring comes back around ... wait till the post season awards are handed out, I'm willing to bet its those kids that will end up winning most of them.

One last point before I try and refrain from being drawed into another debate; Me being from Athens has absolutly nothing to do with my comment made about Dean ... its obvious people only like to read what they want to read. As the football season came to a close, Atnens & NY shared the title but I totally supported and made a case for jeremy Smith to be name offensive P.O.Y - guess what, he was. Girls hoops, I stated that I thought Morgan Grinstead (Alex) should have won. I can't help the fact that Athens went 12-0 in boys basketball, which led me to believe Cori Butcher should be named P.O.Y ... which he was. And I can't help it Athens is dominating the league in baseball for the 2nd straight year, which is why I feel Dean is a good candidate for a post season award.
I know one thing, its pretty agravating to hear ANYONE say I am bias toward a certain team after all the work I have put into the trivalleyconference.com web site ... Guess what, click on the Vinton County team page Hawkeye and see if there is ANYONE in this area that has provided the Mcarthur fan base with more information about the Vikes than I have! I put a ton of effort, time and energy into finding out ALL THE BASEBALL & SOFTBALL scores and spend a lot of time putting that info where its available to everyone! Guess how much I make or have made doing it? N.O.T.H.I.N.G ... NOT ONE DIME, ACTUALLY ITS COST ME ABOUT $500 this year to have that web site ....

Re: TVC Defensive and Offensive MPV canidates
Ok, here we go. No one disputes the amount of work you do, and I am sure some of it is hobby-based. Which means it might cost you money. Secondly, as I remember it, and I could be wrong, your support for the football MVP was Vinny Rider. During basketball you threw your support for Butcher, Lien, and Grinstead. In meantime, you disparaged Vinton County's Tori Dixon and Andy Grillo. I am one-hundred percent positive that you did not mean too, but you did. Now you have "endorsed" Kyle Dean. So lets re-cap; and again I could be wrong, but your support was for Rider, a Bulldog; Butcher, a Bulldog; Lien, a Bulldog, and now Dean; a Bulldog. What you might be missing is that Andy Grillo is having one of the greatest offensive season in not only Vinton County history but in the state. And that is where my problem lies, as a society we tend to live based on perceptions and perceptions are usually the things we only see. We must open our minds and be receptive to the endeavors of others, especially from those that are entrusted to tell their stories.
Again, Kyle Dean is an outstanding player. He is very deserving of recognition, but he was not recruited. Therein lies my other problem, Ohio University and especially their baseball program is not doing the Southeast District any favors. Which is a problem. I am not sure how many may know this but OU's baseball team is on their way to losing 40 plus games this season, but yet, they refuse to recruit local kids. The list is long to area talent that has slipped or Carbone let get away to other schools; Jake Hale (Alexander-Ohio State), Seth Dawes (Chillicothe-Xavier), Josh Berrea (Sheridan-Ohio State), Jared Humphrey (Jackson-Kent State), Kendall Coleman (Hillsboro-Cincinnati), Brandon and Byron White (Wheelersburg-Akron), Andrew Elliot (Wheelersburg-Wright State), Travis Shaw (Washington Court House-Kent State), Scotty Lewis (Washington Court House-Ohio State), Tyler Wynn (Warren-Cleveland State), Zack Skaggs (Adena-Oakland), Mike Chapman (Alexander-drafted), Lance Rolston (Alexander-Ohio State), Andy Mix (Liberty Union-Toledo) and Tyler Engle (Fort Frye-Ohio State). If these kids were recruited by Ohio University then it would be a win-win for all parties involved, the kids would obviously get a top notch education and attendance would improved for all OU baseball games, bringing pride to the area. Another recent issue is the loss of the the state American Legion baseball tournament because Ohio University's priorities were misaligned. In some estimates, costing the local economy $400,000 in loss revenues. I am grateful that we have the opportunity of Ohio University and the jobs it provides, but it is time for OU to embrace the region instead of exploiting it.

Re: TVC Defensive and Offensive MPV canidates
Ryder plays defense Hawkeye - and he was definitly deserving of his award ... heading to the Naval Academy to play football is good proof of that ... I totally supported Smith for offensive P.O.Y in the TVC Ohio ... I actually had to spit out tons of stats to prove it to the NY folks.
Butcher was deserving - and I guess most of the basketball coaches in the TVC-Ohio agreed. I made no clear cut prediction or choice for girls hoops - I only stated the I thought Grinstead was very deserving and Lein had a good year - but being so young I didn't think for a second she woud get it.
Look; by saying I like Kyle Dean as a player is by no means disrespecting other players in the league ... He's the only name I threw out their ... But when a team clearly dominates the rest of the league; a player from that team usually wins a post season award & I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again for baseball. When Athens is down in a sport (which is bound to happen - it always does with high school sports) I will be the first one to fully support a player from a different team .... Athens won a TVC-Ohio title in football; they went undefeated in basketball and their about to finish a two year span with an overall record of 23-1 in baseball ... I'm sorry that happened, but its 90% of the reasoning behind why I liked certain players from Athens to win a post season award .... its simple math man - not favortisim.

lol ... absolutly nothing tomcat dad ... I just wanted to see what kind of rise I could get out of my old pals Hardy & Kittle. I know they get on here from time-to-tme and whenever I get the chance - I like to get a few shots in.
Hawkeye - not sure what you mean about Dean not being recruited .... they just did a story on him going to OU in the messenger a week or so ago ... But let me tell you this; Scott Strickland played for kent State (A MAC school) & started all 4 years and if I remember right was named freshman of the year in the MAC ... Kyle Dean is nearly just as good of defensive player as Scott and is 5x the hitter Scott ever was ... He can play in the MAC and it won't surprise me if he does quite well.
