Here is a quick recap of the game today with Portsmouth Post 23 vs. Mt. Carmel Post 72.

The 2008 baseball season came to an end today for Portsmouth Post 23 (boys in blue) against Mt. Carmel Post 72, losing in the bottom of the ninth 4-3. Post 23 scored first in the second inning when Ryan McAlister walked with two out. McAlister moved to second on a passed ball and then over to third on a Shaun Cook single. McAlister then plated the first run of the game for 23 on a wild pitch by Post 72's pitcher. The lead however was short lived as #13 from Mt. Carmel blasted a homerun over the left field fence to tie the score 1-1 after 2 innings.

The game would continue to be a struggle for both teams on the offensive side of the plate over the next four innings. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Post 72 scored 2 runs to take a 3-1 lead. # 9 led off the inning with a walk, followed by a bunt and throwing error. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice 1 to 3. With one out and runners on second and third, # 15 picked up an RBI hit on a ground ball in the hole to Adam Wamsley who threw the runner out at first to make the score 2-1. #2 followed with a single to make the score 3-1 after seven complete innings.

In the top of the eighth Post 23 rallied to knot the score at 3-3. Zack Buckiewiez singled and moved to second on a Nick Kemper walk. Adam Wamsley reached first on a fielders choice leaving runners at first and third. Bryan White singled hard to right to plate Buckiewiez and Wamsley scored to tie the game 3-3 on a throwing error by the right fielder.

Post 23 could not get any offense going in the top of the ninth, going down in order. In the bottom of the ninth, #9 walked and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. #26 from Mt. Carmel came up witht he game winning RBI on a hit to right center to make the final score 4-3 in favor of Post 72.

Post 23 finishes its second season under Jack Branon and Lance Davis with a record of 37-17.

Post 23 stats:

Runs- 3
Hits- 4 Zack Buckiewiecz 1B, Bryan White 1B & 1RBI, Shaun Cook 1B, Daniel Armstrong 1B.
Errors-1 throwing
Left on base- 5

Post 72 stats:

First of all congratulations to Coaches Branon and Davis on leading these young men this year. You have been great leaders for them and your sacrifices have been significant in bringing back Post 23 baseball.

To the players on this year's roster, a big congratulations to you. You approached the 40 win mark, won a District 7 Tournament Championship and made it to Athens, and have developed friendships that will last a lifetime. It was a pleasure to meet some of you and have the opportunity to get a chance to talk to you in Athens before your final game.

From what I understand, several of this year's graduates are going to get a chance to play college baseball and continue your love of the game. Also, this year's team was pretty young overall and should have many veteran players returning next year. With the creation of the junior team this year it has given a lot of younger boys a chance to travel and play and many of them will be able to step right in next year. They no doubt have been coached well with Coaches Schuler, Noel, and Bradshaw.

Finally, a big "thank you" goes out to the fine people at the American Legion Post 23 and for coming up with the money to support this baseball team. I don't think very many people realize how costly it is to run a team the way Post 23 does, especially with having a junior team now. The cost of uniforms, umpires, travel, etc.... is very expensive. Post 23 has for many years been one of the highest regarded Legion programs in the entire state of Ohio going back to Bill Newman and his 29 years as manager which was simply amazing.

Once again, congratulations on a great season and representing Post 23 on the field the way it should be done.
