If the ump indeed called the ball fair, then I've made a fool of myself, but I thought his explanation was that the ball was foul but the fielder's foot was still in fair territory when he touched it. Good luck to Pickerington.

He called it fair. He told me it was fair by 3 feet. I think it was less that 3 feet (I would call it fair by about 1 1/2 feet) but it was still fair. I had a pretty good view from where I was standing... And he did make the call immediately which is very important.

He may have called it fair but I was told by what I consider to be a very reliable, source that was directly behind the backstop that he stated the rule incorrectly which gave the impression that he did not know the rule and was basing his call on the rule as he understood it. It makes little difference now, Athens played very well and deserves any success they achieved.
