I believe they beat Valley 12-3, but I'm not exactly sure. I know it was something like that.

It sounds to me like the Pirates haven't skipped a beat from last season and are really putting up some impressive offensive numbers while holding teams to under 3 runs. It could very well be another deep tourney run this year. This group of kids have been solid ballplayers since their LL days.

I was in attendance tonight at the Burg game. Wasn't too impressed on the performance of the burg catcher. Any thoughts on this?

Everybody has an "off" night. Don't let that one time to the ball park fool you, he does a good job and will continue to do so the rest of the way.

The Valley game was a mercy rule game in five innings, 13-2.

The Wheelersburg catcher does fine. It is amazing how one bad throw becomes such a blanket comment. The first baseman could have presented a better target in the situation but he only plays that position occasionally and so could use a little more situational experience. On the flip side there were nice throws to get outs at home and at third base in key situations. Of course the pitcher and third baseman did their parts in those plays too.

Burg #1 is right about the Ironton bench. They sounded the like the worst of what you hear from some softball teams. Totally taunting of their opponents and nothing positive in support of their own teammates. I am just glad that I won't ever have to hear that from a Mike Estep coached team. (Thank you coach.)

How did the Pirates do tonight against Northwest?

burg is tough. have not been tested and won't be locally. they do need to clean up the "easy play" errors. experience needs step up and make the play. little mistakes mean nothing in "run ruled" games, but one run games little things make a big difference.

BURG won 13-3 tonight against Northwest play tomorrow against Adena and Circleville i believe, and the comment about the catcher- he is fine on one play the ironton batter crossed in front of him to prevent him from throwing to second the same as tonight with the player stepping in front of our catcher tonight. I dont think blue will call it until the batter gets hit with the ball while the catcher is attempting to make the throw. Burg catchers are fine- ;-)

actually the homeplate ump accidentally stepped into the catchers line of fire as he was making the throw to 1st.

tobias put the thread anywhere you like. it was a conference reference. last i looked greenup was a kentucky team. i do believe the cincinnati reds are also a good team. then there are the osu buckeyes, ssu bears oh my!!! plus the burg already took it to the tigers. sorry if any trojan (a seaol league team) may have felt slighted.

A catcher in baseball can be compared to an offensive lineman in football. As long as a catcher is doing the job such as calling a good game, blocking balls in the dirt, etc., they get overlooked just as a lineman does when making his blocks. But, if an offensive lineman lets his man get by him, or if a catcher has a passed ball then they are the focal point.

The coach and quarterback know what their lineman does for the team and appreciates the efforts. Well, the coaching staff and pitchers know what our catcher does, and appreciates those efforts too. He calls the game and does the job very well.

I heard that Wheelersburg defeated Circleville today but the Adena game got a late start and probably won't finish until around 7 or 8 o'clock.

thanks for the geography lesson. lets just see how the local teams fair come tourney time. i doubt that greenup and burg will see each other. but too bad given how close i am told they are in proximity to one another. for the rest of the qualified opponents we will have to wait and see.

So proud of our boys this past week- they played 7 games in 6 days and i know they were worn out. This is really a special group of young men who love the game and love and respect the best coaches in the game. Go Burg ;-)

Wheelersburg baseball is a lot of fun to watch. This team is solid every year and plays the game the right way. Why wouldn't they? They have some of the best former players from the area coaching them. The coaching staff of Mike Estep and Matt Conn was pretty tuff to beat anyway, now they add Andy Heimbach and Tim Sutton to help with the pitching. There's a lot of knowledge and baseball experience on that staff. All played the game well beyond high school.

We are blessed with good kids that put forth the effort it takes to have a program such as this. But I will agree, I think these kids practice and are prepared better than anyone around.
