bigmama42....I've been increasingly frustrated that Buzz hasn't been getting us as much Oak Hill baseball information as I would like — just so you know. Buzz is aware of my feelings on this too.

He may be a "stringer" and paid per story, but he has an obligation to us as he has a signed contract with us.

Since I see my name in this, I now have a few things to add for public awareness.

1. We — the sportswriters of the area — have bosses who tell us how they want the product to be. Almost all of the current area papers are county-oriented, not city specific. If that is not acceptable, take it up with our bosses — not us.

2. Nobody on this forum or this planet agrees with the public more about needing more help for coverage than the area sportswriters. We need more full-time help, we need more stringers, more photographers and a couple of other things too — like higher wages. If it were up to us, each and every one of these issues would be approved last week.
Unfortunately, that — again — is not our call. You need to take that up with our bosses as well.

3. Given my situation at The Daily Sentinel, Gallipolis Daily Tribune and Point Pleasant Register, the fact that only Sarah Hawley and myself are the only ones doing sports for the three daily papers. Well, let's just say that Tom Cruise knows nothing about mission impossible.
That's 14 papers a week — both writing and designing — after working with nine schools and 30 spring sports in 7.5 hours a night, plus three websites. Essentially, we have two-thirds of a person per paper. No other paper in this state works at that capacity.
And as mentioned before, that was not requested by the sports department, especially with only one camera.

4. Our business is getting information to the public, not specific areas. In trying to cover as much of our area as possible in a fair and proper fashion, there will be times that we simply cannot do everything that we need to do in person. That is why we ask for cooperation on game information. The coaches have the information (scorebook) and they would be the ones to benefit the most by contacting us, because it benefits their kids and programs. This, BTW, is not for our glory, but for the communities involved.

5. Before attacking us for what we "don't" do, maybe next time this information could help shed a little light on your thought process. It's called working with all of the facts, not just the ones you want to focus on. That's what journalism is all about.

And on a personal note, Feeney-Bennett baseball has not been covered the last two summers due to significant errors on the FB end. When coach Haislop advanced the team to the state tournament in 2007, we were there. Then, he wasn't brought back.
In 2008, we received the FB schedule on July 2, or roughly after over half of the season had been played. Last year, FB did a little better getting us the schedule after it arrived in the last week of June.

If FB isn't worried about getting us a schedule until half of the season is gone, then we must not have been a big priority for them. I always find it funny that the places that don't work with us are the ones that complain first.

I can tell you that I have already received this year's schedule, so FB will be covered this season.
