Gallipolis edges Warren Local, 5-4

Chuck Calvert’s one-out, bases loaded single over second base gave host Gallipolis a 5-4 non-conference victory over Vincent Warren Local on Memorial Field Thursday evening in a makeup contest.

Beau Whaley, the fourth GAHS hurler, was credited with the victory. Zack Heath suffered the loss in relief. Nate Heiss started for Warren and hurled the first six innings.

Austin Roush started for Gallipolis. He had a 4-0 lead after five innings. John Troester relieved Roush in the sixth. Chuck Calvert took over from Troester in the sixth, followed by Whaley,

Warren scored three runs in the top of sixth, and tied it up a 4-4 in the 7th on a bases loaded walk.

GAHS loaded the sacks in its half of the seventh, aided by two WLHS errors. With one out, Calvert’s safety gave GAHS its sixth win against two setbacks.

Gallipolis took a 2-0 lead in the first on Ian Dressel’s two-run double. The Blue Devils made it 3-0 in the third, and 4-0 in the fourth.

Both teams loaded the bases later in the game, but the Warriors scored three runs in the sixth and tied it at 4-4 in the top of the seventh.

Gallipolis returns home Friday with a Southeastern Ohio League game against Jackson at 5 p.m. GAHS is 4-1 in league action. Jackson is 0-3. Saturday, GAHS will play a twin bill at Athens with the first game starting at 12 noon.

Warren Local dropped to 2-4 on the year and will battle Logan at Logan Friday in a SEOAL North Division game. Warren is 1-2 in league play.

JV Devils defeated Warren JV 9-5.

I was unable to attend the Varsity game. I heard there were quite a few interesting calls.

One both ways. Both calls were at first base. My view if could have gone either way on both calls.
