Visiting Gallipolis defeated Athens 16-5 and 13-10 in a non-league doubleheader at Rannow Field in The Plains Saturday afternoon.
The twin victory increased the Blue Devils season record to 9-2. Inside the SEOAL’s South Division, GAHS is 5-1. Athens dropped to 10-4 overall and remains atop the Tri-Valley Conference's Ohio Division with a 6-0 record.
Gallipolis, weather permitting, is scheduled to play seven games in six days this week. Monday, the Blue Devils will play at Logan and Tuesday, at Eastern. Both are non-league games. Wednesday, GAHS has a makeup Southeastern Ohio Athletic League South Division game at Jackson. On Friday, Gallipolis plays another SEOAL road game at Ironton. This game was originally set for Gallipolis, but Ironton played up here last week because its diamond is still under construction, thus the switch.
Saturday, GAHS is scheduled to play River Valley in a non-league twinbill at the University of Rio Grande, starting at 12 noon.
This past Saturday, Junior John Troester hurled all six innings in a mercy rule victory over the Bulldogs in the first game. Troester fanned four, walked four and gave up only five safeties. GAHS made two errors. Doug Chapman was charged with the setback. Gallipolis had 10 runs on 10 hits. Athens played errorless ball
Austin Roush was two-for two, including a double plus he had three walks. Troester also had two safeties for GAHS. Chuck Calvert had two hits, including a three-run homer over the left field fence in sixth inning for the mercy runs. Tyler Eastman, Brett Bowman, Terry Smith and Ian Dressel also had safeties.
Athens grabbed a 2-1 lead in the first inning, and was up 3-1 following three innings of play.
Gallipolis erupted for 11 runs in the top of the fourth to take a 12-3 lead. Athens cut it to 12-4 in its half of the fourth, and 12-5 after five. GAHS plated four runs in the top of the sixth inning to wrap up the victory.
It looked like Gallipolis would mercy Athens in the second game as the Blue Devils led 3-2 after one inning. However, AHS kept bouncing back. The Bulldogs got one in the second and two in the third to take a 5-4 advantage after three rungs. Gallipolis got three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 9-5 advantage. GAHS forged ahead 13-6 and had the bases loaded in the sixth, but Athens came back with four big runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final margin 13-10,
The Bulldogs also had the winning run at the plate when the game ended as Austin Roush got the Devils out of a jam.
Roush was the fourth GAHS hurler used in the game. The victory went to Chuck Calvert. Other Blue Devil hurlers were Beau Whaley, who started and Terry Smith. Smith and Kruize Wandling also caught for the Gallians in the high-scoring battle.
Athens used at least seven pitchers in the contest. Curtis Goldsberry was charged with the loss.
Gallipolis had 13 runs on 10 hits and made four errors. Athens had 10 runs on eight hits and made five errors.
