Gallipolis stops Portsmouth, 6-1

Blue Devils win 9th league game
Host Gallipolis scored a 6-1 Southeastern Ohio Athletic League baseball triumph over visiting Portsmouth on the Robert H. (Bob) Eastman Ballfield at Centenary Monday evening.
Coach Rich Corvin’s Blue Devils improved their overall record to 12-2 (excluding a 4-4 tie with Meigs in a 10-inning battle on April 8). Inside the SEOAL, Gallipolis improved its mark to 9-0 with three conference remaining on its2011 league schedule.
GAHS, weather permitting, will travel to McArthur Tuesday for a non-league game with Vinton County at 5 p.m. Wednesday, GAHS will host Chillicothe at 5 p.m., in a SEOAL contest and Saturday the Blue Devils will travel to Richmondale to face Ross Southeastern and Waverly in a twin bill at 12 noon.
Portsmouth dropped to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in league action. The Trojans will play at Jackson on Tuesday in a makeup game then play a non-league game against Ironton on Wednesday. PHS has a makeup game at Marietta on Thursday and a twinbill with Chillicothe on May 2.
Portsmouth loaded the bases off Justin Bailey in the first inning following a Josh Myers double and two Bailey walks. However, Bailey got a strikeout and ground out to end the threat.
Gallipolis drew first blood when shortstop Caleb Warnimont led off with a single. However, Warnimont was tossed out stealing for the first out. After Tyler Eastman grounded out pitcher to first, Justin Bailey singled, stole second and scored on a single by Jim Clagg.
Portsmouth tied it up with two out in the second inning when Len Collins walked, went to second on a passed ball and scored on Myers hit to right field.
Gallipolis scored what proved to be the winning runs in the bottom of the third inning. Eastman opened the frame with a single to centerfield. Bailey was safe on an error, then Jim Clagg singled to left to score Eastman with what proved to be the winning run. GAHS plated a third run in the third on a pair of singles by Russ Dennison and Ben Saunders to take a 4-1 advantage into the top of the fourth inning.
GAHS plated two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth on a single to center by Eastman, an error by PHS on Bailey’s grounder, a fielder’s choice by Clagg, and a sacrifice fly to deep right by Dennison.
Bailey hurled six full innings for GAHS and was credited with the win. Caleb Warnimont relieved him in the seventh, retiring the Trojans in order. GAHS played errorless ball.
Bailey allowed one run on three hits. He fanned seven and walked four. Warnimont fanned two Trojans. Jeremy Scott was charged with the loss. Scott allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits. He fanned three and walked one. Levi Porter relieved Scott in the fifth inning. Porter allowed one hit and fanned one batter. PHS had three errors.
Myers had two of Portsmouth three hits and one RBI. Scott had the other PHS safety. Myers had the Trojans lone RBI.
Three Blue Devils had two hits apiece—Caleb Warnimont, Tyler Eastman, and Jim Clagg. Justin Bailey, Russ Dennison, Casey Denbow, Ben Saunders, and Tyler Warnimont recorded the other GAHS safeties. Dennison had two RBIs while Clagg, Saunders, and Tyler Warnimont had one each.
