Miami Trace upsets Gallipolis, 4-2

Blue Devils finish season at 22-7
Seventh seeded Miami Trace upset number one seed Gallipolis 4-2 Thursday night in the 2012 Division II District baseball finals in Chillicothe’s Veterans Administration Stadium.
By virtue of the triumph, the Panthers (10-10) advanced to next week’s regional tournament semifinals at Zanesville (May 24) and will play Edison, winner of the Warsaw I district title at 2 p.m.,
Number five seed Unioto (16-7) defeated number three seed Fairfield Union (16-12) 3-1 in Thursday’s other Division II finals earlier in the day at Chillicothe.
Thursday’s defeat snapped Gallia Academy’s five-game winning streak and left the Blue Devils with a 22-7 final season record, best in the school’s history, but one win shy of the school’s first ever district championship. Miami Trace will play the Warsaw 2 district champion at 5 p.m., on May 24.
Thursday, GAHS fell behind 2-0 after four innings, The Blue Devils were still down 2-1 after five, but tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh inning to force extra innings.
Miami Trace then scored twice in the top of the eighth inning and held GAHS scoreless in it’s half of the eighth to send Gallipolis home for the year.
Starter Bryan Taylor was charged with the loss. Justin Bailey relieved him in the 8th inning with one out. Taylor faced 33 batters. He fanned eight and walked three, gave up four runs on six hits but his teammates made a season-high five errors. Bailey pitched to just two batters.
Brad Wallace went the distance for Miami Trace. He fanned four, walked four, and allowed two runs on five hits. Wallace faced 34 batters. MTHS made three errors.
Brady Ward led the Panthers at the plate with two safeties, one a triple. John Phillips, Blake Baldwin, Tom Haynes, Grif Ward and Jim Schoellkopf also had basek knocks for the winners.
Drew Young had a double for GAHS. Other Blue Devil hitters were Ty Warnimont, Justin Bailey, Gus Graham and Bryant Bokovitz. Bailey had a RBI for GAHS.
B. Ward, G. Ward, Phillips and Haynes had RBIs for Miami Trace.
