Jackson played without 3 starters. They stopped stealing, stopped going on wild pitches and passed balls. Played the entire bench most of the games. But Jackson had 19 hits in four innings of offense and Wellston pitchers walked 16 batters. It was just a bad game that got out of hand. You can't tell the kids not to play hard.

Even in little league you can't do much else.
16 walks is brutal

No reason not to have a mercy rule that can go into effect after 4. Waiting till 5th inning is sometimes not soon enough. Been on both sides of those games, can't get an out or can't make an out when you want to...no reason to not have a 15 after 4 rule.

I like the idea of that one!

I favor this over the mercy---if you are drilling a team, let your kids bat as they normally would---don't turn them around---then after they get their hit or walk have them leave early (softball) or wander off and get picked off in baseball.
If I'm on the wrong end of the drilling---I still don't want a .600 hitter not trying their best against me---it's not fair to the kid. Let them lace their double and then get picked off. Everybody is happy that way.

The only issue with getting picked on purpose is when coaches are looking at all sate and all district stats. that goes down as caught stealing, sometimes speed on the bases might be the difference between two other wise equal players.

I think this could happen more frequently in SEO this late in the season. Teams with a bunch of rainouts are essentially playing almost every day for the last 2 or 3 weeks. Many teams competing for league titles will save their top 3 or 4 pitchers because of many league games in a short span of time. I know a team down here that played 4 league games in 7 days due to makeup games. This leaves teams throwing their #5, 6, or 7 pitchers against non-league teams. Sometimes that can get bad, especially if the other team is throwing #2 or 3 or they're deep in pitching and have a quality 4 & 5.
I like the 15 after 4 rule but it also has some negative aspects. A game where the home team that is up 15 runs will end after 3 1/2 innings, that doesn't leave much time for subs to play. If you currently compare baseball to basketball or football, the 10 after 5 is comparable to cutting out the entire 4th quarter plus some of the 3rd. That is a lot. But I do see everyone’s point. Tough subject.

Why is it that Baseball and softball are the only sports with a mercy rule? Football can be a lot more dangerous in lopsided games and nobody enjoys a 50 point blowout in basketball. If those sports don't have to call it quits why does baseball/softball? This is high school....make a couple plays and get out of the inning.
Can't ever tell a kid not to hit the ball! Creates bad habits.

Ummm....because Football and Basketball have a clock....so at some point the contest ends.

As an umpire at the high school level I would love to see a run rule put in after 4 innings. No sense in being there 30-40 extra minutes just because the losing team struggles to get 3 outs.
