LLOYD Red Devils pitching issued nine walks and yielded five unearned runs in losing for just the second time in their last six games at the People’s Bank Classic at Greenup County.
Russell (7-9) trailed the back-to-back Ohio Division III state champions 3-1 in the fourth inning, then committed two infield errors and yielded a sacrifice fly to fall behind 6-1.
Landon Brewer went 2-for-2, Austin Brinkman was 2-for-3 and Heath Hensley drove in two runs for the Red Devils.
Dylan Miller was 3-for-3 with three RBI for the Pirates.
Chance Holbrook went the distance for Wheelersburg, allowing six hits and three walks and fanning seven Red Devils.
Nick Conley was Russell’s pitcher of record.
Russell returns to action in the Classic today at 11 a.m. Its opponent was to be determined at press time.
