Yeah you do it's called having respect for the other team!! You're right it's not the pros so why demean another team just cause you can. Have some sympathy!. Most kids understand and if a coach asks you to do it will! I know I would if my coach asked me to!footballfanatic1 wrote:come on ....ask a player to strike out on purpose.....gal4ever has it correct. dont steal, bunt or advance only on force outs.....

I have seen several coaches or teams leave bases early to get outs called. Is it classy or classless? Depends on the situation and your view. There is no sense in running up the score on a team, but the other team may feel like the one leaving early to get outs is showing them up. You never ask a kid to strikeout on purpose, but you don't steal and take extra bases on hits. Go base to base. Most coaches that are getting beat that bad would not have a problem with the other team leaving early.
If I'm an umpire in this game, and the team ahead was running the score up, sending runners extra bases, and stealing. I would call players out for leaving early. The OHSAA harps on sportsmanship. Running up the score is not sportsmanship. This is not little league.

This is exactly what is wrong with kids these days.... Take your beating, learn from it and get better. It is more disrespectful to purposely make outs than it is to keep playing the game. It is never right to tell a kid to quit playing hard. Sympathy is a bunch of crap!! You play hard and you play the way you were taught. If the other team or their fans can't take it, then work harder and get better. You are trying to tell me that if you are a reserve player trying to break into the lineup, that you would go to the plate and K on purpose? If so, you are a joke and need to go play the flute.wemufans wrote:Yeah you do it's called having respect for the other team!! I'm going to throw my two cents worth in here. As a member of Chillicothe's softball program, I understand both sides of the equation. It's easy to say "get better and work harder" when your from a program that is running like a well-oiled machine. On the other hand, all the years of Chillicothe getting run-ruled spurred our current players and coaches to become better, stick with the program and get better. Chillicothe has even been on the other side of run-ruling opponents and it's a tricky matter. You go game-by-game on those kinds of situations. There's a few teams that we'd run the score up on if we had the chance because that's the beauty of taking a beating for 10 years; when you get a chance to give it back....do it and do it hard!!

I would totally agree. Just a couple of observations to add. How many hits produced 37 runs for West? I can't help but think there must have been quite a few walks and errors on the part of South Webster to allow that many runs. Please understand that I'm not putting down the girls or coaches from S.W., it's just that we shouldn't demonize the West team for such a lopsided score. I've always been of the opinion that hits and base running win games --pitching and defense will keep a team in a game.gahs4ever wrote:We had a game that could have been like that tonight, but our coach played all 17 girls at least two innings, one girl DID bat left handed, and our base runners refused to advance unless in a force situation. We still scored 19 runs in 5 innings.
IMO you NEVER tell a girl to strike out on purpose!!! The back ups work just as hard as the starters with not as many opportunities to get plate appearances. You may stop bunting or stealing or taking extra bases, but never ask a girl to make an out on purpose. It has nothing to do with the score or "running it up."
