There is a lot of rules on coaching outside the high school season. As well as senior league too.
They cant start to soon or be on the field before dates that are set by the ohsaa
Usually these dont get turned in but if they do look for there to be punishment handed out

There are very strict rules that govern a coach's ability to coach. If it is the River Valley team, then he or she could get in big trouble. Programs can have open hitting, and open practices and the coach can be there to observe, but nothing more than that. It's not really a grey-line but most coaches probably can't help but give a few pointers every now and then.

I was not for sure he was in violation. Looks to be a clear violation. The program will fall all on its own its just the fact that this school seems to think they can do whatever they want. The rules can clearly be one way and the entire athletic department does nothing they support this man and his violation. So what do you do if the Athletic director will not do anything?

1- he has never held a structured practice or anything that even comes close to resembling it.
2- he has encouraged his girls to go to hitting and pitching clinics that are instructed by other coaches. Yes he goes as well. Seeing as to how his daughter attends.
3- he encouraged the girls to play indoor winter softball at Rio this winter as he has the past couple of winters. This program is managed by the Rio Girls softball program.
4- most importantly cheshirecat you are one of our own? Shame on you. Stirring in the pot. False information. Do you not think that River Valley has had enough BS and lack of support from the entire community. Rally behind your youth and stop tainting the program anymore than it already is.

Well here are a few things I know for a fact he has done:
1. When the high school starts the pitcher/catcher practices 2 weeks early he brings ALL the girls in and informs them "they are all catchers/pitchers for the next 2 weeks".
2. He texts, post on facebook and calls parents of any and all ages and grades for students to do open gyms and trips to Ashland for KC Diamond. He organizes, transports and runs the whole thing.
3. Although he isn't listed as the coach, he has a summer team that plays at Meigs. Someone else puts their name down, but he calls the girls to ask them to play as well as attends the association meetings as a rep for the team.
4. He meets with all those interested in playing indoor winter ball at the school. Hell he even took it upon himself to put them on teams. Now this league is supposed to be run by Rio's softball team but Mershon makes it his job to divide the girls up.
These are just a few of the many underhanded, sneaky things this guy has done!
RV has some talent in their softball program, but this coach is just running them into the ground. I wonder how many losing seasons he gets before they get rid of him? I believe he is working on 3 maybe 4 with 2012.

OK, first of all I want to apologize to southeasternohiopreps for Cheshirecat and RVMOM comments. These two people are very unhappy people no matter what is going on in their lives. All of RV knows who these two are. It is a shame that all schools have people like this to deal with.
1. NFHS new rule for 2012- All players are able to start on Feb 20th. No more pitcher/catcher two weeks training without other players. “WOW’ I bet they made this rule because all high school were guilty of what you accuse RV coach for.
2. I-PHONE S is the upcoming technology - Who doesn’t text or use face book to spread INFO. And if the RV coach is calling and texting “parents of any and all ages to come to open gym and KC Diamonds to help build a better RV softball program, then RV fans should be “Happyâ€. I believe his daughter goes to KC Diamonds, which I believe it is a paid lesson to become a better player. So, if he is guilty of asking parents that have girls that plays on the high school team that he has found a great way to get some “Off season lesson to become a better RV player†what is wrong with that!!
3. Summer ball – I believe that his daughter plays summer ball. I have watched this team play that the RVmom says he is the coach of. Let me list you the names of the girls- Katelyn (RV graduated) Kelcie (RV graduated), Talor (SG graduated), Morgan(SG graduated), Cauldia (Galli graduated) China (RV graduated), Megin( SG 11th grader), Hammon(SG 10th grader) ( 2 rvms 6th and 7th graders) (3 girls from RVHS 9th grader 11th grader and his 10th daughter). If you read right only 3 girls will play on this years RVHS softball team (remember 1 is his daughter) NFHS- states that a high school coach can do 10 instructional sessions with his team form JUNE 1st to JULY 31st. It is a shame that he needs to hide in the bushes to watch his daughters play summer ball. I have been to some of the games. I have never seen him on the field. The times I have seen him is when he was sitting beside his wife watching and enjoying seeing his girls play ball.
4. Rio Indoor Softball- I was one of the parents that attended the meeting for Indoor softball. The reason he held the meeting at RV HS school (nothing sneaky or underhanded here)was to inform the parents before they paid their $70.00 fee what was to be expected from them with all the games being on all Sundays in Nov and all Sundays in Jan. He also stated that the RIO Grande coach wanted him to collect all money due that night. Once the money was collected he stated that the girls need to put their names on a piece of paper so that he girls could draw names out of a hat to see hat teams they would be on. One of the parents even let the girls use his hat and each girl pulled name from the hat. All parents were in agreement with this process. RV should be proud that the RV softball team was able to help RIO sofball raise money.
I just wanted to post to all of southeasternohiopreps fans that all the RV coach seems to want is the best form all parents of any and all ages to help him build a better program . ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS “GO RVâ€

No need to apologize for me, I stand by my opinions. I'm pretty sure I'm not who you think I am and unhappy is not me.
I am glad to see they changed the NFHS rule, now he won't be in violation anymore! Lieing isn't a good thing for a coach to teach a team.
You can sugar coat his actions all you want, but the reality is the softball program at RV took a nose dive when McFann left and Mershon stepped in. Their record speaks for itself.
It's a shame that with all the potential we have for a winning softball team he can't seem to accomplish it.

I agree with RVMOM. How dare this coach put in that kind of time and effort? Wanting girls to play summer ball instead of Playstation. Allowing girls of all ages to get in extra softball practice during the winter. Cmon man! No school needs a coach that cares that much. Next thing you know, he'll be expecting girls to run sprints at practice to get in shape. RVMOM, you say your not who she thinks you are, just clear everything up by telling us who you are. What's your real name? After all, I'm on your side. "Viva la Revolucion!!!!!"

If the intentions are good there would be no sneaking. A coach should be a good role model too. How can you be a good role models if you don't follow the rules and cut corners?? Maybe if I could borrow your rose colored glasses I wouldn't see the real issues, just all that caring you speak of.

Bd452 Cmon Man. Don't give the RV coach another ideas for off season practice. You Know that there is softball game for play station. Next thing you know Rvmom will be using that reason to call the coach sneaky and under handed because he went out and bought the playstation for "all parents of any and all ages to play. You know this is kind of fun. I wonder how long we can keep this post going. It is like I stated in my last post "ALL of RV knows who you are. The reason we know is because you always have to have the last words. So, we will sit back and wait patiently on your next meaning less post on how you fill about the RV softball coach. Just for the record "ALL RV coaches derserve a hand for dealing with RVMOM.
