Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
Friday night, Wahama hosted Southern and after Southerns third inning bat, the game was called due to a mercy with the score being 10-0. I have never seen a game ended in the 3rd inning due to mercy rule. I've been told this is because Wahama plays by West Virginia rules, but didn't Wahama want to join the TVC? They should have to play by the TVC rules and if they don't want to, then they should join a league in WV. Wahama would have probably won the game if it continued, but that is not the point. The point is they should play by our rules. But i do believe that 10 runs in a girls game is not much to make up so playing 3 innings is just unreal to me. Only 1 southern player batted twice, the rest batted once. and by the way, the game was also played in new haven which looked to me to be like a pee wee field (they were having problems with their regular fields) one girl hit it over the fence and i'd be surprised if there wasnt a couple hit over the fence every game. Anyways, I am glad that I am from southern and only had to drive a half hour or so to watch 3 innings. I know that if i was from Miller and had to drive close to 2 hours for 3 innings i would not be happy. not to mention gas prices being almost $4 a gallon. Imagine the cost to put gas in a bus and pay a bus driver etc. I just believe this is an issue that needs to be adressed. what a joke!

You play by what ever rules the are in the state you are in. Ky has the third inning mercy rule. Last year we pitched at 43 feet in KY but then they came to our place it was 40 feet. That is just the way it is. ** If your team would have scored more there would have been no ploblem!
Re: Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
To me, it makes sense to play by the rules that govern the game at the home team, with no regard as to whether it is a TVC league game or not. Changes to the rules between Ohio and West Virginia should be subtle and not be likely to affect the outcome of the game.

How did I know someone would say that? You are exactly right, if we would have scored more runs the game would have went on and it would not have ended in the 3rd. That is not the point. The point is a school wanted to join OUR conference but yet does not want to play by OUR rules. no wonder wahama is so good. they score ten runs and then call the game! anyways, we all know the story on wahama programs. they always make it to the states etc and have first team all state players all of the time but its because the level of competition is wv is waaayyy low. Lets see how good your teams would do if you were going to the state tournament and playing teams from cleveland, cincy, toledo, columbus. not quite the same as playing teams from parkersburg and charleston...just saying. join a wv league

Re: Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
Wahama might have asked for admittance into the TVC but it took the current schools in the league to vote them in.
Perhaps rules the Ohio/WV rules that differ should have been discussed and an agreement reached before starting play.
How many schools from Cincy, Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus does Southern play? Just asking.
Sounds like whining to me.

Re: Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
southern rarely ever plays teams from those areas which is one of the reasons why you don't see us going deep into our tournaments because thats when you come up against teams from the big cities. but theres not a great depth of talent in wv and that is why you see wahama always ranked so high in the state and then we come in and beat them with some of our worst teams (like this year when we played them the first time in boys bball) anyways although i still stand by what i have said, i have gotten off of the subject and i aplogize. bottom line is that if you wanna play in an ohio league, play ohio rules. if you werent in our league and we came over there to play you, we would expect to play by your rules. but thats not the case. i mean come on, 3 innings isnt even a half a game!
Id say when wahama was voted into the league, maybe nobody realized we would be playing by different rules every time we went over there. im sure you will see this brought up at meetings and im sure it will change next year and then you wont hear us "whining" when we get screwed. just think wahama needs to start preparing their players to play full games, not 3 innings

i would agree with that if you were just going out of state to play a out of league game. i think it is totally different when you are in wv and play in an ohio league. play ohio rules or go back to wv. i dont know why they wouldnt want to stay in wv, much easier to be successful there!
Re: Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
Do you people not understand that it is a league game. It's not like southern went to Kentucky to play a game. A tvc game should play by the rules that everyone else does
Re: Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
you really dont expect west virginia umpires to officiate to ohio rules do you?
Re: Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
That's a good point 91.... I read about this West Va. mercy rule a couple of weeks ago in the Huntington paper... An official of the states governing sports body stated the rule was put in so the girls would not be overly embarrassed by the final score... Sounds like a bunch of Crap to me.... Maybe West Va needs a mercy rule in all sports...LOL.... All states tweek the rules, especially in baseball & softball... Ohio use to have a high school rule book for baseball, then one year they switched to the American Federation Rule book, I have no idea what they go by now???? Bottom line, don't blame Wahama for this rule...... You play in West Virginia you play by their rules... If you don't like it don't play West Virginia schools..... I would also bet that West Va would not allow any modifications in their rules when playing out of state teams....

Seems to me Wahama has had plenty of success playing in the TVC.bb_fan wrote:osumufan wrote:You play by what ever rules the are in the state you are in. Ky has the third inning mercy rule. Re: Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
Ok I don't blame Wahama for the DUMB mercy rule, but as far as "don't play WV schools"..we dont have a choice they joined our OHIO league. Bottom Line-It is a dumb rule. 3 innings up by 10 is all you have to have to win a game? thats crap, thats not even a half a game. And if you really think about it the mercy rule is a joke anyways. Do you see a mercy rule in any other sport? we arent talking about gradeschool here. getting beat by 10 is far from embarassing, not to mention in girls softball its very easy to come back from that. If it was 30 to 0 in the 3rd inning, that might be different. The game was far from "out of hand". Anyways, i think its simple. You want to play in the TVC which is in the State of OHIO, play our rules. Everyone else in the TVC plays the same rules until you travel across the river to Wahama. They get to play by different rules. bunch of bullsuperblue wrote:That's a good point 91.... I read about this West Va. mercy rule a couple of weeks ago in the Huntington paper... Re: Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
and as far as wahama doing so great in the TVC, I will give you football and thats it
Re: Wahama/WV Mercy Rules
I am with ya BB fan..... It is a stupid rule and should be changed... But it has to be changed in West Va., and that probably won't happen this year.... I am sure there are a lot of West Va. coaches who do not like the rule. Issues like this should have been addressed when Wahama entered the league... Having a league with schools from different states will always present problems like this... At least now the Ohio TVC schools should know the rule.... Here is something off the wall, maybe a game like this could be turned into a doubleheader, start over after 3 and call it a non league game... Probably not one of my better ideas........LOL
