from the columbus dispatch...
Bloom-Carroll softball coach Aaron Alvelo has been placed on administrative leave and said he plans to resign in the next few days amid a scandal in which nearly $6,000 has turned up missing from student activity funds.
The Lancaster Eagle-Gazette broke the story today that Alvelo, 43, is being investigated by school officials and Carroll police in the matter. The deposited money, which turned up missing between Dec. 1 and March 25, was to be used to fund the team's Spring Break trip to Florida. Alvelo announced a week ago that the team would not make the trip due to insufficient funds, raising suspicions among softball parents and boosters. An informal audit was requested.
Alvelo, who guided the team to the Division III state title in 2013 and a runner-up in 2014, is the father of Bulldogs senior standout Taran Alvelo, who is rated the No. 1 pitcher in the nation and has signed with the University of Washington.
According to the Eagle-Gazette story, school officials have informed Alvelo not to attend practices, games or any coaching activities and he is not allowed on school grounds, and that Taran is the only player or parent he may have any communication with during the investigation.
While denying any wrongdoing, Alvelo told the paper that he will resign to avoid any further distraction from the team. He has a 58-7 record in two seasons.
Long-time Bulldogs coach Choc Woods will return on an interim basis.
