Pfloyd's Elite 8 of Southern/SouthEast Ohio Week #1 ... ok! 1/2 a week ...

Post by pfloyd »

... sure felt good to hit the roads of Southern/Southeast Ohio and watch some hoops !!! I watched 9 games in the first 3 days of action ... was able to see 4 of my top 15 teams on the hardwood ... between scrimmages/ previews and the regular season up to this point in the season I've put eyes on 23 of the 72 teams in the Southeast District ... please bear with me on the rankings the first couple of weeks !!! the Pre-season rankings were for conversation purposes based on what team finished last season with , my eye tests done on those teams and information gleaned from coaches/and you folks it was a STARTING POINT ... now adjustments are being made based on what I KNOW - ie. Westfall was ranked #23 in the Pre-season - Westfall had one of the best PG in the SouthEast District coming back for his senior season in Corey Wyman - a torn ACL has him out for the season ...his absence shows as Westfall dropped it's first games this weekend ... these first 2 weeks will see some large drops and jumps ie. South Point - the Pointers sport 2 of the best guards in Southern Ohio in Tayshaun Fox and Alijah Adams I got to see SPH at Zane Trace vs a good Circleville team - South Point IS the real deal - an all around good ball club they have leap frogged from #46 to #21 based on my eye test a BIG win over Ashland KY and Circleville ... so don't start throwing rocks this direction into Hocking County !!! I will sort things out the first 2 weeks - trust me (says the used car salesman) ;)

Great list as always pfloyd. Tough loss for my Eagles this week against a good Oak Hill team wasn't many open shots for either team the Oaks just knocked down a couple when it counted the most. This Eagles team is good they play tough D, last year's team was the best defense in school history giving up around 50 ppg and this team seems ready to beat that, We just started the year off in a bad offensive flow against the wrong team and coach and they got us. We do have kids that can put points up and we have depth have some nice players coming off the bench and they can all score and play D, which we will need in our league every night is the night for kids to step up. I'm sure when you come to Beaver, Dec 10th you won't leave disappointed great Soc1 Friday night matchup with the Clay Panthers.

Great list Pfloyd, but I'm not sure how you justify keeping Unioto at 6 after losing to Logan that you have ranked 11. Unioto also lost to Vinton County in a scrimmage before the season started. I think Unioto is good, but I think you have them a bit overrated.

The same goes for Eastern Pike now ranked 16, beaten by a now 21 ranked Oak Hill team. I'm not sure if Eastern Pike is overrated as much as Oak Hill is underrated at this point. This game was not a fluke, it was a tightly played game the entire way through. I think the Mighty Oaks are flying under the radar right now. Starting 4 very good juniors and senior, this team will make some waves this season.

brown22 ... Mrs. pfloyd & I will be there Friday night ... will there be programs/roster sheets sold at the door ? I've been taking my phone so I can take pics of the official scorebook prior to the start of games when a roster sheet isn't available ... I'm looking forward to seeing both your Eagles and the Panthers from Clay HS ... last December I traveled to Sciotoville to take in the Panthers game with the East Tartans ... nothing like small gyms to give you a sense of what high school hoops in Southern/Southeastern Ohio are all about - great atmosphere ...

Unioto was ranked #2 over all in the preseason ...Unioto has a lot of talent returning - I've seen them - I know what they bring to the court - 1 loss on the road, 1st game of the season, to a very good Logan team "ain't" going to drop them out of the top 8 ... not sure the next one will either (as the injury to Logan Swackhammer the starting PG for UHS looked like it will have him sidelined for awhile) as far as the loss to Vinton County in the foundation game? Waterford lost by 20+ to Warren in a foundation game on Friday night - I'm not holding that "scrimmage for a cause" against them NOW this week Waterford travels to Portsmouth to take on the Trojans THAT IS A BIG MEANINGFUL game for both teams LOL ...I think I was fair to Uniotobased on their performance (which I saw) and the wins by VC,Miami Trace, FU and Lynchburg Clay ... but I will agree to disagree ... 1 game does not make a season ...

The same goes for Eastern Pike now ranked 16, beaten by a now 21 ranked Oak Hill team. I'm not sure if Eastern Pike is overrated as much as Oak Hill is underrated at this point. ... Eastern Pike was at #12 ... as you said lost to a good Oak Hill team ... the Eagles dropped 4 spots ... I will be seeing Eastern Pike vs Portsmouth Clay this Friday night - so I hopefully will have a better feel for what the Eagles bring to the table so I can compare what I KNOW about other teams on the rankings to what I see from Eastern Pike Friday night again vs a very good ball cub in the Clay Panthers ... since all of the Clay ballclub returns for this season I will be able to see the growth in the Panthers from last season - I saw them vs Portsmouth East in December last year in Sciotoville and again at the Convo in the post season ...

... as I posted it will take a couple of weeks to get the rankings settled in to where "I" feel comfortable with where I have the majority of teams ranked ... the more teams I can see early on the better ... Tuesday I will be traveling to Meigs to see the Warren Warriors vs one loss Meigs ... Logan again on Wednesday at Licking Heights ... Friday night in Beaver for the Eastern vs Clay matchup ... Saturday I will be in Portsmouth to see the Trojans vs Waterford followed by Portsmouth East vs Minford ...

... I92 ... the Ironmen weren't on my MUST SEE list BUT I'm anxious to see what Coach Marrow has put together ... talked to a Fairfield Union coach at Logan on Saturday night - he said that Jackson was the real deal, playing good basketball ... personally I KNOW that Coach Marrow is putting together a similar TEAM as what HE played on for Coach Ford back in the day ... those were fun JHS teams to watch - I'm sure the scrappiness of the coach, the tenacity of the coach are ALL playing into what HE wants out of his kids on the court ...

... I will get out to see the Ironmen before Christmas ...

I think southern may be a tad bit to low my friend. I have them pegged as the no. 2 in the hocking division.

Big show down Friday night Fairfield Union at Logan Elm. LE has passed the look test in their first 2 games with big scoring wins. Will be fun to see how the Falcons Defense does against all those guards from LE. There will be match up problems for both sides.

That opening win over Unioto was big for the Chiefs! Logan is going to be a lot better this year than many in the area were thinking.

I appreciate your response pfloyd. A lot of basketball to be played and I'm sure there will be many shakeups coming in your rankings.

... Oaktown - if there is anything that can be counted on in hs hoops it's the unexpected wins and losses that make ranking teams almost impossible LOL ... so don't be rooting for those shakeups !!! LOL ... j/k the great thing about hs hoops is that you CAN'T play the games on paper ... it's up to the youngsters to take care of "bidness" on the court - THAT'S when the shakeups happen on any given night vs any good ball club ... by the way I will always respond ! I may be totally wrong BUT I will at least give you my rationale behind what I have done ... I've been "beaten" before on my rankings and will definitely be beaten up again LOL ...

I KNEW that Ridge Young was the real deal , he has taken the same route as big brother Dillon did for LE ... his senior year Dillon was as near to unstoppable as any player I have seen Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line - getting to the rim, scoring from downtown he had it all ... before the season - I would have said Ridge would be the same as his older brother Dillon in that regard a scoring beast ... now what I am surprised at is the role players around Ridge !!! someone else is scoring the ball as well for the team to be scoring over 80 ppg ! ...

I'm having fun watching Dillon at PG for the Marietta College Pio's. He's a JR now and one of the best ball handlers in the OAC.

To help you with Clay's roster as I saw them Friday at Paint Valley (Swingle kid is BIG 6'11" 300+lbs I was told and played big 30 pts and 17 rebs) but Clay behind play from Gilliland (17 pts, 13 rebs) King (18 pts with his ff's icing it in the end) and Riffe (14 pts) as they were the better overall team. Clay started:
King - 15
Riffe - 5
Pack - 20
Gilliland - 10
Meade - 30

Apparently injuries have hit Clay hard as Hinze (3 yr starter) was in a cast and Williams (24) starter last yr but just released from a broken bone injury last week??? Williams did play some but wasnt in basketball shape. I was watching a college game Sat evening but heard on radio on drive back that Clay put it all over a much younger Northwest team with Gilliland putting up 32 pts on near perfect shooting from 3 and elsewhere. Should be a good game Friday and rematch later in the season might be even better.
