maybe for your team---how would you know those stats at this point--I guess my opinion could be wrong, but I am basing it on what I have seen when they played us and both those games was about offense for him---but I will say one thing---he has an awesome shot---if he plays next year like this year he will be hands down POY---but this year competition will be close.

Whoever gets it should be proud to have played in such a class of good athletes!!!!!!
It should be fun at the SOC all star game.

I do not believe Shanks gives near the effort as Smithson. I am an ND fan but I have seen enough in two games. Either Tibbs or Smithson. Osborne and Shanks --- honorable mention.

So two games makes you an authority huh? Check your facts before looking stupid next time.

According to stats of the two games between Western and Notre Dame
Shanks had 17 points and 8 rebounds
Smithson had 8 points and 7 rebounds - Shanks Grandma could probably score 8 points against Notre Dame!

2nd meeting
Shanks and Smithson both scored 18 points
Shanks had 13 rebounds and Smithson had 7 rebounds

Maybe Shanks makes basketball look more effortless than Smithson because he is more athletic. I know for a fact that he is not the kind of person who is not giving 100%. He gives it all. In three sports and in academics. Honorable mention? ... I don't think so...

I cast my vote for Shanks. He was in strong contention last year. If his team had won the league he would have had it then. This year he is his team leader on the winning SOC team. If he doesn't get it, then it is simply an injustice, not only to him, but to the SOC I.

You must be related to Shanks. Especially with your ability to to requote the stats. Give Vince points because of his look and athletic ability -- I think not. Smithson -- keep your head up son. They were ready for you to play second fiddle I bet from the start of the year.

You are the catalyst of that team. You and Tibbs have my vote. Shanks is good. He is a top three. Would be a lot better is he gave consistent effort.

dirt_cinders, nice try. And for your information, anyone can "requote" stats if they know how to use a computer and/or newspaper and can read...No one should give Shanks points for his look or athletic ability. They should give them to him for his stats. What are you basing your beliefs on about Smithson? No one on here is saying he is a bad player. I don't know who the "they" you are referring to might be, but you are a very misguided individual. Smithson is a talented ball player that I like alot. I personally think that this team is loaded with talent and they are nice kids. However, Shanks is the most consistent player on this team. The game he looked the worst in was at Eastern Pike. He was two points away from a triple double! with three defenders hanging off him. I don't know what the "catalyst" is that Smithson provides, in your opinion, but I do know consistency and leading stats make POY candidates. Consistent results show consistent effort IMO.

i believe shanks deserves POY because he puts up huge numbers with five guys on the court who can have huge nights at any time, tibbs is a close second butt he is the only wone who can deliver for symmes valley, so its easier for him to do it big then shanks, so i give it to shanks.

No question it's Tibbs. SV would not have won 1 game without him. This is about Player, not team. Western was the most talented team in SOC1 and Shanks was a fine player for them, but take him away and Western STILL wins 8 games. Take Tibbs off SV and they don't come close. Shanks will get it but IMHO Tibbs deserves it. Put them 1 on 1, Tibbs by 4, going to 10.

The winner of the POY "Player of Year" will be however has the best POY "Politician of Year".
There is no way to really measure a player all around abilities. With so much being subjective involving the person voting basketball knowledge and their own experiences with basketball. That doesn't even begin to involve the political like deals being made.

From just reading this topic and the close voting here maybe it would be best to have Co POY this year. To say the best player comes from the best team is not right just as the best coach does not always come from the best team. Many of the best coaches have done their best job coaching when they have not had the best talented team. Then they have to actually coach all the time to get the most out of their team. The same can be said about players.

You're right Farmer, If you were to give the COY award , it has got to go to Fraley at Green, given the mess he has endured. But it won't. It will go to Harrop, who has done SO little with SO much. Stapleton at NB has also done a good job and Bradford at East is always dismissed (I think he's the best coach in the SOC). League championships are all that matters when it comes to voting and that says something about the "brain dead" attitudes around here with the media.

Frank n Beans you are also right about Coach Fraley. Just to be able to finish the year with all going on means a lot. Many variables go into coaching and playing. To bad there is nothing that measures the basketball IQ of those voting.

I agree with all of you that the Osborne kid from Eastern, Tibbs from SV, and Shanks and Smithson from Western are all very good candidates for POY. But you all say it has nothing to do with team but it does because none of these boys would be as successful without the help from their teammates.

I believe Shanks should get this award over Smithson because he has played a more consistent year. Smithson has made a great effort this year, but it took him a few games into the season to get started. They are both awesome players and it does look like Smithson puts more into the game than Shanks, but if you look at the stats, Shanks usually stays at his average, he is just a quiet player compared to Smithson. I am not taking anything away from Smithson or anyone else on the team, they are all good players or they would not have had the success that they have had this year.

Shanks should get this award hands down.
